Blackpool Zoo is looking for a practical, hands‑on General Maintenance Assistant to join our Operations team. This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same. You will help keep our buildings, animal enclosures, visitor facilities, and wider grounds safe, functional, and looking their best. From routine repairs and grounds work to supporting new developments across the site, you’ll play an essential part in helping the zoo run smoothly for animals, staff, and visitors.
What You’ll Be Doing
General Maintenance & Repairs
- Carry out day‑to‑day repairs including fencing, gates, enclosures, buildings, basic plumbing, and general joinery.
- Assist with improvements and refurbishment of animal enclosures, ensuring safety and welfare are never compromised.
- Support landscaping and outdoor maintenance such as path repairs, drainage checks, vegetation clearance, and seasonal preparation.
- Respond to reactive maintenance issues promptly and professionally.
- Keep all work areas tidy, safe, and compliant with our procedures.
Support for New Builds & Projects
- Assist with groundwork, preparation, and installation tasks for new builds or upgrades across the zoo.
- Help with the development of visitor areas, operational spaces, and animal facilities.
- Provide practical support to contractors onsite and ensure workspaces remain safe and organised.
- Contribute practical ideas during planning or project discussions.
- Move materials, prepare tools, and help set up project sites efficiently.
Health, Safety & Animal Welfare
- Follow all health & safety guidelines and safe systems of work.
- Contribute to risk assessments where required.
- Maintain secure barriers, locks, bolts, and gates around animal enclosures.
- Report any hazards, defects, or incidents immediately.
- Adhere to biosecurity and hygiene procedures, especially in animal areas.
Operational Support
- Carry out routine inspections across the site, including public and staff areas.
- Assist with deliveries, stock checks, and safe storage of materials and equipment.
- Keep workshops and maintenance areas safe, clean, and organised.
- Support waste management and recycling processes.
- Monitor tool, material, and general maintenance supply levels.
Vehicles, Tools & Equipment
- Carry out basic vehicle checks and report any issues.
- Ensure tools and machinery are checked, cleaned, and stored correctly after use.
- Operate equipment such as strimmer's, pressure washers, and handheld tools once training is completed.
Working with Others
- Maintain a professional, helpful approach with colleagues, visitors, and contractors.
- Communicate effectively with other teams to support the smooth running of daily operations.
- Represent the zoo with high standards of behaviour and appearance.
About You – What We’re Looking For
Essential
- Experience in general maintenance, repairs, grounds work, or a practical, hands‑on role.
- Confident using a range of hand and power tools safely.
- Good understanding of general health & safety practices.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently.
- Positive attitude, good communication skills, and strong team ethos.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Able to carry out physically demanding duties.
Desirable
- Experience in a zoo, farm, wildlife park, or similar setting.
- Basic trade skills (carpentry, plumbing, bricklaying, etc.).
- CSCS card or relevant machinery training.
- Experience supporting site development or construction projects.
- First Aid qualification.
Working Hours This role may include weekends, bank holidays, and occasional evenings as part of a rota. Flexibility is essential, especially during busy periods and major projects.
