About the role

In Network Operations, we monitor and manage BT’s UK platforms and services 24/7, 365 days a year. This includes our UK transmission networks, core IP networks supporting Broadband, Ethernet and Mobile services, as well as legacy services such as PSTN, Private Circuits and ISDN30.

We also manage BT’s internet peering, Europe’s largest Wi Fi network, power and environmental systems across our exchanges, and the internal networks supporting BT staff and sites worldwide. Alongside this, our Cyber Security team handles a high volume of daily cyber threats, and our Network Cloud team is transforming our data centres to support evolving technologies.

Our role is to identify and resolve issues before they impact customers wherever possible. When incidents do occur, we respond quickly, restoring service efficiently while keeping customers and stakeholders informed with clear and timely communications. For Ethernet, MEAS and private circuit customers, we also carry out specialist diagnostics and repairs.

Most of the teamwork shifts in our operations centre at Adastral Park, delivering day-to-day service management. We collaborate closely with field engineers, customer-facing teams, other network service areas, and external suppliers. As technology evolves, Network Operations continues to grow and adapt to meet increasing demand.

What you’ll be doing

Diagnose and resolve faults across Linux, OpenStack and SDN environments.
Troubleshoot network connectivity and performance across tenant platforms.
Support tenant onboarding, testing and day-to-day operations.
Take ownership of incidents from start to finish, ensuring fast and effective resolution.
Lead complex or high-impact incidents, making key technical decisions.
Keep customers and stakeholders updated with clear, timely communications.
Proactively monitor services using OSS tools to spot and fix issues early.
Manage supplier escalations and drive timely resolutions.
Maintain accurate documentation, processes and incident notes.
Work closely with teams across Design, Build, Operations and suppliers to resolve issues.
Ensure smooth handovers between teams to reduce service risk.
Coach and support colleagues, sharing knowledge and best practice.
Step up to provide leadership cover when needed.
Drive continuous improvement by identifying gaps and improving ways of working.
Follow processes, policies, and security standards at all times.

Essential Skills / Experience

Networks / Cloud experience
Experience with Linux (Ubuntu). OpenStack experience is not required but a nice to have. (Nova, Neutron, Swift, Glance, Keystone).
Solid understanding of IP networking (Routing, Switching, MPLS) and SDN (ideally Juniper Contrail).

Desirable Skills / Experience

Proven ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues across infrastructure and networks.
Good understanding of SLAs, incident management and service performance metrics.
Confident taking ownership of issues and driving them through to resolution.
Experience working with suppliers and vendors to deliver results.
Strong communication skill, clear, concise and customer-focused.
A collaborative approach, working effectively across teams and stakeholders.
Ability to lead, mentor and step up when needed.
Proactive, curious and solutions-focused mindset.
Commitment to learning and development. An interest IP Networking or Linux certification (e.g. CCNA/JNCIA).
Strong attention to detail and awareness of service impact and risk.
