Role Overview
The Company is seeking to appoint an Atomic, Molecular and Optical (AMO) Physicist to support the continued advancement of its core technology platforms.
This role will contribute directly to the design, development, and validation of precision atomic systems, including atomic beam sources, laser‑based subsystems, and vacuum‑integrated quantum devices.
The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team and play a key role in translating cutting‑edge scientific concepts into robust, scalable, and commercially deployable hardware solutions.
What You’ll Be Doing
Duties may adapt in line with business priorities and typically include:
- Apply theoretical and experimental AMO physics expertise to advance quantum device development
- Develop Python/Julia scripts for analysing raw experimental data and extracting actionable insights
- Integrate opto-mechanical systems, electronics, and software into cohesive platforms
- Support equipment setup, system demonstrations, and technical troubleshooting
- Identify suitable materials and components to meet project specifications
- Maintain detailed documentation of project progress and proactively resolve issues
Working Together
- Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams including physics, vacuum, electronics, and manufacturing
- Participate in design reviews, system architecture discussions, and technical decision-making
- Mentor engineers and technicians working on optical systems
Making an Impact
- Deliver core optical technologies enabling next-generation quantum hardware
- Define architecture and standards for scalable optical subsystems
- Drive improvements in stability, performance, and manufacturability
What You Bring
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- PhD in experimental atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics.
- Hands-on experience with laser systems, including optical design and alignment
- Familiarity with control systems and signal processing
- Proficiency in Python or similar programming languages
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively in team settings
- Passion for working in dynamic, entrepreneurial environment
- Ability to adapt to needs of rapidly growing business and enthusiasm for engagement with training and development opportunities
Desirable Skills
- Experience integrating complex hardware/software systems
- Proficiency with ARTIQ experimental control software, and/or experience in embedded system applications.
- Knowledge of ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems and associated hardware
- Familiarity with 3D CAD tools (e.g. SolidWorks), electronic design software (e.g. Altium), and/or optical or physics modelling software (e.g. Zemax, COMSOL)
- Hands-on experience in electronic circuit design and debugging
- Project management experience
- Understanding of Health and Safety practices and commitment to safety culture
How We Work
This role is primarily based in our office and laboratory facilities, involving regular interaction with technical equipment such as computers and laser systems. The position may require periods of sitting, standing, bending, and manual handling of equipment weighing up to 16kg.
You’ll be expected to use standard office and laboratory tools (e.g. laptops, printers, and communication devices) efficiently. Any necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided and must be used in accordance with our Health and Safety policies.
