As a Mortgage Underwriter, you will be responsible for assessing, underwriting and approving mortgage applications in line with lending policies, regulatory requirements and risk appetite. You will deliver a professional, efficient and customer-focused service throughout the mortgage journey, providing support to customers and key stakeholders both before and after completion.
Working with accuracy and sound judgement, you will help customers achieve their home ownership goals while ensuring all lending decisions are compliant with the Society’s policies, procedures and regulatory standards. You will be committed to providing an exceptional customer experience, maintaining high service levels and contributing to positive customer outcomes at every stage of the process.
Here’s a taste of what you will be doing as a Mortgage Underwriter at Nottingham Building Society: -
- Underwrite mortgage and further advance applications, ensuring compliance with lending policies, regulatory requirements and risk appetite.
- Make sound lending decisions, including policy exceptions and AIP referrals, with clear rationale and a focus on good customer outcomes.
- Operate within a delegated lending mandate, escalating cases where required to Senior level.
- Manage applications proactively from submission to completion, meeting service levels and maintaining a strong customer and broker experience.
- Build effective relationships with brokers, customers and key internal stakeholders, acting as the main point of contact for assigned cases.
- Assess valuation reports and apply appropriate conditions or request additional information where necessary.
- Resolve enquiries, escalations and legal correspondence efficiently and professionally.
- Identify, manage and escalate risks appropriately, working closely with teams across Sales, Product, Compliance, Credit Risk and Financial Crime.
- Contribute to team performance, process improvements and the delivery of excellent customer service.
- Keep up to date with industry, regulatory and technology developments to support informed lending decisions.
About you: -
- Strong knowledge of mortgage underwriting, retail lending policies and responsible lending principles.
- Good understanding of relevant regulations and legislation, including MCOB, Consumer Duty/TCF, GDPR, AML and CDD/KYC requirements.
- Sound knowledge of mortgage processing, property valuations, conveyancing and associated legal requirements.
- Up-to-date understanding of mortgage products, market trends, emerging risks and industry developments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and explain decisions clearly.
- Highly organised, detail-oriented and able to manage a varied workload in a fast-paced environment.
- Digitally confident, adaptable to change and open to new ways of working.
- Customer-focused, with strong empathy and a commitment to delivering fair customer outcomes.
- Previous mortgage industry experience is essential.
- Specialist underwriting experience and a lending mandate up to £500k across Residential Owner Occupier and Buy-to-Let lending are desirable.
