Job Description
We're looking for a creative and detail-oriented Route Setter to join our team at our climbing facility in Sheffield, United Kingdom. As a Route Setter, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining climbing routes that challenge and inspire climbers of all skill levels. This role combines technical expertise with creative problem-solving to deliver engaging climbing experiences while maintaining the highest safety standards.

Design and construct climbing routes of varying difficulty levels that align with facility standards and member feedback

Assess route difficulty and ensure appropriate grading and categorization for different climbing disciplines

Maintain and inspect all climbing holds, anchors, and safety equipment to ensure compliance with industry safety standards

Collaborate with facility management and coaching staff to develop programming that meets member needs and facility objectives

Customize routes based on seasonal themes, competitions, or special events

Document route designs, modifications, and maintenance activities for record-keeping and quality assurance

Stay current with climbing industry trends, techniques, and best practices in route setting

Communicate effectively with climbers to gather feedback and continuously improve route quality and variety

Assist with facility operations and member engagement activities as needed
Qualifications

Proven experience as a Route Setter or in a similar climbing facility role

Strong climbing background with proficiency across multiple climbing disciplines (lead, bouldering, top-rope)

Comprehensive knowledge of climbing safety protocols, equipment standards, and industry regulations

Demonstrated ability to design routes that are engaging, safe, and appropriately graded

Proficiency in route setting tools and equipment maintenance

Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams

Physical capability to work at heights and perform manual labor

Preferred: Experience with climbing wall design software or digital route planning tools

Preferred: Certification in climbing instruction or safety management

Preferred: Experience working in a customer-facing recreational facility environment
