Full job description

Pelta Medical Papers is a leading manufacturer of high-quality, medical-grade paper used worldwide in healthcare, sterilisation, and laboratory environments. The chemistry of our paper — fibre selection, wet-end formulation, surface treatments, contamination control — is what separates a product that protects a sterile medical device from one that fails. Precision, reliability, and innovation are at the heart of everything we do, and we are now looking for an ambitious early-career chemist to take real ownership of that chemistry from day one.

We are seeking a degree-qualified Chemist (or equivalent — Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Materials Science) who is at the start of their career, either a recent graduate or with up to a few years' industrial experience. This is a hands-on, broad-scope role spanning quality control, problem-solving, and new product development. You will work directly with our production team, our customers, and senior leadership on problems that matter — and on creating products that don't yet exist.

Working closely with our experienced team, you will:

Run and develop the QC laboratory: testing raw pulp, in-process samples, and finished medical-grade papers against specification.
Investigate and resolve quality issues — root-causing contamination, formation defects, strength deficiencies, and process variation back to the underlying chemistry.
Optimise wet-end chemistry: retention, drainage, sizing, biocides, and additive systems.
Lead and support development trials for new paper grades and reformulations of existing products in response to customer requirements.
Work with customers and suppliers on technical specifications, certificates of conformity, and material qualifications.
Contribute to continuous improvement projects across the site, working alongside engineers, operators, and management.
Help build the technical knowledge base of the business — turning what we learn into documented procedures, specifications, and design rules.

Essential requirements:

A 2:1 or above in a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline. No equivalents will be considered.
Strong A-Level results, including Chemistry.
Strong practical laboratory skills and a willingness to work on the production floor as well as at the bench.
Analytical, structured, first-principles approach to problem-solving.
Self-starter with genuine intellectual curiosity and an appetite for learning a complex industrial process.
Good written and verbal communication — you will be writing reports, specifications, and customer-facing technical documents.
