Amey Plc

I worked for Amey via Hays agency on a temporary contract, splitting my time between Stafford Head Office and Stone Depot. 

I initially struggled with the commute to Stafford (from Stoke) due to family commitments. My Manager was hugely understanding and went out of her way to help overcome this. I was initially offered more flexible hours, and then later given the opportunity to work at the highways depot closer to home (which transformed my work/ life balance and massively reduced stress). 

Stafford HQ is a lovely modern building, and the team always very welcoming. My colleagues there were always very kind and helpful. 

The Stone depot is an older building and rough round the edges aesthetically, but I absolutely loved it. This attributed largely to the fantastic team working there. It is a melting pot of hot desking Managers from around the county, and the highways ground team. I can honestly say that I haven't worked anywhere in years that has a group of people with such great and heartwarming comradery. Right through from the senior managers to the cleaner, everyone was well respected and equal. 

I was also warmed by the high level of mental health awareness within Amey. This both at HQ and the Depot. Whilst temping there I was diagnosed with Autism, which was daunting - but at every stage, and a few tears on my part, I was treated with complete dignity by my Manager. With such a life changing diagnosis, the level of support I received made such a massive difference to how I managed it. I also witnessed this dignity and support provided to others who were suffering cancer, and life-changing illnesses. 

I have previously worked in other construction and engineering companies, but from what I experienced at Amey they are truly leading the way forward with mental health awareness. This admittedly driven by some key individuals, but it was still nice to see Amey giving them a platform and opportunities to provide wellbeing information and support to the business. Again I witnessed first hand how this was transforming one individuals life - and will without doubt save lives in the future. 

With male mental health being in such dire of need of raised awareness, it was so heartwarming to listening to the guys increasingly open up and discuss this. And importantly, starting to (with huge commitment!) support one another. Massive praise to Amey and the team for this. 

I can't claim Amey to be 100% perfect. The systems can be very slow, my temp position/ work was somewhat monotonous, and their are some individuals who I felt were hindering business development due to their own agenda. But to an extent I think you get that everywhere. All in all though I have absolutely loved working at Amey and inparticular my time at Stone, and shall miss it. From my experience I wouldn't hesitate to recommend working for them.

I worked at Amey for 6 months until I decided to leave due to the job being unsuitable from what I was expecting to do. As an apprentice, I expect the company to use the time and money to allow me to work and learn on the job but unfortunately, I was used as a labourer instead to work in stores and to clean their yard most of the time and was given no opportunity for further training after recently failing one of the courses.
At times, I was told to work in civils (which I didn’t want to do) and the work was too physical which they use equipment that is not into good condition and methods of working are not safe which is more likely to cause injuries from lifting heavy items without the use of aiding equipment.

I use my 20% “off-the-job training” to record evidence of my work and to be fair, I have learnt quite of bit from it which has allowed me to pick up some skills. I usually attend the training centre once every 3 months at Norwich and the training side of the apprenticeship I find is really good and very helpful, so had no problems with this at all.

The management is alright but the supervisors are not fully organised, they make last minute decisions which gets me confused without notice and they sometimes swap me into different teams or do different tasks by working in stores instead. I’d prefer them to keep me into one same team and don’t change until a reasonable notice to do so.

The workplace culture is very demographic, they tend to hire sub-contractors who speaks in polish and other English accents which I can hardly understand due to my hearing disability when working in the stores. My colleagues can somewhat be friendly but some are ignorant who moan about my work.

I would have continued working for Amey if they give me further training opportunities, correct management and the ability to work with electricians and other less physical teams. I will have enjoyed my job going up in a cherry picker and working on the lanterns, but this isn’t the case in this role.

•	Manage Noticing team – making sure information is relayed to relevant staff and ensuring that all sla’s are met by all staff and that they understand what the sla’s are for
•	Manage Streetworks team – includes the receiving of charges, validating them and returning them within the sla
•	Manage Invoicing team – receiving invoices related to defects and charges, validating them, returning them within sla, and accurately recording them

I did 6 years at Peterborough, useless management, avoid the one who can't be named but has only half of his manhood and talks like Sylvester the cat, bullying supervisor who's stolen so much kit from the company it tallies in the thousands. How does he get away with it you might ask? Family of course....will try to set you up to fall if there's any hint of disobedience. Dual standards, missing wages, rusted clapped out Van's fitted with spyware and trackers that go as far as monitoring your driving style speed and yes even conversations!.  I finally left when they tried to give a disciplinary for turning up on time...what they don't understand is if you turn up 10 mins early a day that's nearly an hour a week, 50 or so hours a year and over 350 hours over my time there for free!!!!??? I don't think so.. (no, if you're wondering why don't you book the extra time? They don't pay for anything under 15 mins hence the 10) sneaky eh? couple this with fact that their own h&s clearly states that being on site early means you are not covered by their insurance and as anyone who has worked for this company knows breach of rules leads to a stage 1

My typical day at Amey was like openning office on arrival. Switching television onto the news channel for updates in the morning.

My responsibilities whilst working as a receptionist for Amey included maintaining effective and smooth operation of office switchboard, ensuring all visitors are satisfied with the type of service offered, ensuring visitors sign in/out and given passes whilst on site, replying to e-mails efficiently on Outlook, making sure managers are informed on time of their clients arrival, reporting serious complaints urgently to the appropriate person for consideration, ensuring all parcels are collected and signed from the courier, keeping reception clean and tidy at all times, making sure keys are stored back into the key box after usage, ensuring public leaflets are updated and topped up every morning and close reception after finishing work.

They were no difficulties whilst on the job, I really enjoyed my employment within Amey and would love to have the opportunity to wok again with the company.

I have worked for amey for the past ten years on three separate contracts. 
I started at the bottom and availed of the large training opportunities offered and progressed to management.
I have found them to be a very good employer. 
They offer a large amount of benefits, and have always had understanding managers. 
Deadlines are sometimes difficult but this is similar in any company.
HR needs improvement but I have always found that H&S is the most important part of the company.
Pay could be improved in some areas, but this tends to  be reflected on the contract you work, generally these are in line with marketplace competitors.
Given the size of the company it can be difficult to role out large scale changes and can take quite a while to reach ground level.
I can only speak from my own experiences but if you are willing to work hard and be flexible, it is rewarded and the training provided has given me ample opportunities to move to other better paid roles elsewhere but I choose to stay.
You get out what you put in.

Primary schools are easier and smaller areas but secondaries are larger areas with only 3 hours to get done to an acceptable standard. It is hard work and I don't think managers care about you as long as you do it and they get no complaints from the school, moral is very low all round. My Amey colleagues in the school I work in have been brilliant we are a team, but that is no thanks to managers help at all. Management, where do I begin!! Management are unhelpful, rarely answer your calls, rarely answer your emails and just leave you to 'get on' with the job. The worst thing about this company is that staff turnover is huge including managers who don't seem to know what they are doing. Issues with paying overtime, having to chase money up each month as they regularly pay you wrong. You cannot trust the managers to put the correct amount of overtime in so pay is usually wrong most months. Not a good company to work for! 

A very clique atmosphere in every depot
they’ve employed a lot of people that have no clue about the business and these people are on the same money as the ones that are experienced..so you have to do your job plus carry the deadbeats and absolutely nothing is done about it

your required to be available day and night (maybe a week of days then week of nights) be on call 24/7 for a week at a time 
no family life (as falsely advertised)

there’s a lot of sitting about in canteens for days at a time until work comes in which can be very tedious

basic pay is terrible for a 39 hour week
nightshift pay is atrocious at time and a quarter
year salary for class 1 Hgv drivers is £25k (after Covid average class 1 jobs advertised are paying £30-£40k+ a year)

If it’s advertised as a hgv position but you will very seldom drive a hgv(unless your out with a gritter)and will be a general labourer instead 

STAY CLEAR OF THIS COMPANY
they always have an advertisement posted for positions this alone is the first red flag 

Not too bad at first but after a while I started to see the issues with this company. The pay is completely unfair, often they would bring people doing the same job in on different wages. My team in particular had quite a bit more responsibility and our role was complicated, yet we were getting paid over 3 grand less than the customer service team! No chance of getting a pay rise. We spent a good chunk of the year trying to persuade upper management to at least match our pay, putting together presentations and business cases, only to be lied to. “Yeah, your pay rise is happening in February!” Asked about it in March - “oh it’s going to be pushed back to the summer”. By the end of the summer we heard nothing, so once again we enquired only to be told we weren’t getting the pay rise at all. You could literally see the company fall apart in front of your eyes due to the poor decision making by upper management. They won’t be keeping that STW contract for long! Don’t work here unless you want to be treated unfairly

I worked for amey carrying out highway repairs and gritting. They would preach health and safety until you put it in to practice and then you would be threatened with discipline action. Gritting hours was all over the place and no set stand down hours so could work 8 hours in the day then grit for 3 hours and then back in at 4 in the morning to grit and then work again. The management moved the goal post to suit there needs and would use disciplinary action as a threat tho try to intimidate people to do jobs and work unsafe. Some depot managers had no people skills and would even say things that was very close to the mark about family and flirting with client and staff constantly. Very unprofessional company and no idea how to talk to people. The staff promise the world and then change it once the job is done. Never any overtime like I was told and if you done gritting there was all talk of what your get and bonus etc and never got anything
