Volunteering for the Stem Cell Register was only a few days of voluntary work however I found the experience advantageous in terms of developing my communication and interpersonal skills.

I was responsible for 3 different roles. These were:

 - Encouraging the public to sign up to the stem cell register by informing them about the purpose of the campaign and how they can help to save a life.

- Collecting spit samples of those who agreed to sign up.

- Helping people to fill in the forms and advising them on what happens next in terms of how their spit sample will be used and what the next steps will be. 

I enjoyed the promoting part of the day as I was out there in the middle of a busy shopping centre approaching people I have never spoken to or seen before and showing them my enthusiasm towards the campaign really intrigued people to sign up. 

I also learned that there are people willing to help make a difference and iv also learned in order to develop my skills it was necessary for me to do something outside of my comfort zone which this volunteering experience helped me to do.

I worked as a cord blood collector for Anthony Nolan. The work is incredibly interesting and fulfilling, and the team at the time I was there were super friendly and competent. It does make you feel that your doing something very special when you collect donated cord blood from newly birthed umbilical cords and placentas. 
However, the management had very little interest in the employees wellbeing or career progression, and the shift patterns were often organised badly which was extremely stressful.  New ideas were not welcome, and concerns put forward regarding ethical ways of working were frowned upon.  I would recommend this work to gain experience within maternity, but not as a long term career.
 When I resigned after being offered a position elsewhere I was told by the manager that an intelligent and ambitious person like myself couldn't be expected to stay in the cord blood collector post, and that they didn't expect their collectors to stay.  
Says it all really.

In some ways a great company to work for, but due to rapid expansion and arguably unrealistic goals the management are out of touch. Although all good people, some are completely unequipped to tackle the roles they're in and take any improvement ideas or constructive criticism as a personal attack - meaning this is unlikely to improve. 
Helpful and supportive colleagues otherwise and a friendly relaxed atmosphere, especially amongst peers.
Drive and ambition for expansion is plentiful, but don't invest enough in their staff - little (if any) room for progression and low salary for the work being performed and money it generates.

Working for Anthony Nolan has been a great experience. To be part of a team that helps to save people's lives has been an achievement in itself. 
To be trained in Phlebotomy has been an asset, as I can use this experience for future jobs. 
Loved working with the management of Anthony Nolan and have a great team of people.
The hardest part of the job was the long shifts, but this was soon forgot about once I had collected some great cord blood donation. Which could oneday be used to save some ones live.

It's a routine lab, expect the work to become a routine after a short while.
Loads of new things to learn and there is a good culture to push the limits of science.
Management and co-workers are alright, at least most of them.
The hard part of the work is to manage the work with the ones that are not so alright.
The most enjoyable of it all is to feel that someone's life can be saved with the work that I do, that is a great feeling.

I love working at Anthony Nolan- I am part of the most amazing team and this is the healthiest work place I have been in. Everyone is so friendly and we all chip in to help each other out with workloads with the common goal of helping patients at transplant centres across the U.K. and internationally.

and lunching with certain members of the staff.

I worked part time for 6 months, I would've continued but wit's my studies alongside, it was difficult. The peopl  are nice, and it's quite social; there are also activities during lunch like yoga and other clubs. There was a kitchen on the same floor as well as a larger kitchen downstairs in the break room. There's also a prayer place.

this was a challenging and questionable role. disorganisation of management lead to travel issues and the hours were not clearly stated in the vacancies advertised. the door to door script was questionable and patronising.

As I was volunteering here once a week, the work given was very relaxed and was done within a team. Packaging spit kits was the routine every week and had to package over hundreds while handling with confidential details. The tasks were done quickly as they were achieved as a team and everyone around was so friendly and helpful.
