What is the best part of working at the company?
Colleagues have each others backs throughout.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management of the college demand higher results with minimal to next to none financial, technical, physical or mental support for staff and members.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Colleagues make the environment friendly and supportive. Students can make the work environment stressful. Management of the college make it hostile.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day requires one to immediately begin lesson planning for the following day, before heading into the classroom, or building the college is renting out to provide the course. However due to students having various needs and attitudes, day-to-day basis is never structured or predictable forcing one to adapt and change the plan somewhat.
Management of the teams are typically available and supportive, but with a clear lack of funding and support from the college itself, often we're forced to make do with limited resources.

The college has a real issue with staff retention and will not do anything to rectify this leaving other staff to pick up extra work with no real acknowledgment. This then leads to more staff leaving and the cycle continues. 

Most people join, gain a few years of experience and then find work elsewhere for more money. 

Management seem to be out of touch with their employees needs. Excited to brag about money their spending on the main campus but nothing in terms of help during the cost of living crisis apart from a minuscule pay increase and a one off bonus. 

Many areas of campus need improvement and to managements credit some are getting sorted. 

A typical day would be filing, creating posters and answering the phone to students or staff concerned about students. 
I learnt how to communicate with my fellow workers and how to give advice to those students that needed it.
The management team their at first were very welcoming but towards the end it was like they got bored of me and I felt like they did not care about the importance of the work experience. 
I never got introduced to my co-workers and so didn't want to communicate with them.
The hardest and most enjoyable part of the job was looking through the college's archives of past students, as it was my job to file them chronologically.

Very exciting job. 

Would be put in different departments daily and get to know pupils and staff and different behavioural and learning difficulties.

I learned how to understand that everyone is different and that everyone will learn and take information in in different ways. 

My management was very understand and they were amazing to work with. 

My co-workers were absolutely lovely and I really enjoyed our daily conversations. 

The hardest part of my job was when a learner would fail or not pass a subject and how upset they would be. 

The most enjoyable part of my job was seeing a learner progress through their course and pass.

I fill multiple job roles which gave me an excellent opportunity to practice a range of skills in an environment with loads of support. Managers are approachable and invested in the staff. If you have some drive to grow this is a great employer. There are a lot of departments and students to get your head around, but if yuou are communicative and organised this becomes easier to manage. The most enjoyable part of the job is the autonomy you are given to manage yourself and improve your department. 

my experience here is very mixed. 
Many of the staff seemed disinterested and did not have enough knowledge or training. 
However some lecture were fantastic and so knowledgeable. 
With the new build I think the facilitates that were lacking when I went there will be much better now.
My education and facilities did not reflect the cost. I found that it was not to university standards. 

Due to the location my only realistic work experience option was on campus.

Managers don't listen to staff concerns, they're happy enough to pin point all the things you're doing wrong and then they do the exact same thing to themselves. They don't like it when you don't feed into their egotistical personality, very clique and antagonistic environment. The only 2 good things about this place is the staff are genuinely nice people (frontliners) and it's good place to get experience but don't settle here as you won't be appreciated or acknowledge long term by your managers. 

I work within a lovely team with clear aims and goals that we all work towards together.    There have been developments in leadership in recent years.   There has been a good increase in pay in the last few months which was well received by staff.  The campus is beautiful and the students are a pleasure. 

There are some areas of college that have been improved and developed and some areas that still need improvements.  However there is a clear campus plan to address these areas.


I was very impressed by Askham Bryan college. I studied a three year course in horticulture and landscape, I enjoyed it and learned a lot about plant science, soils and paving. I am a good team player, I can work well with fellow colleagues on different tasks. As far as hard parts of the job are concerned, I cannot think of any. I think this kind of work either suits you or it doesn't and I know it suits me. The best part of the job was going to various places on trips to do work experience and voluntary work.

I worked at ABC for over 10 years and didn't realise just how toxic the environment was until I left. 

Colleagues work well together but management are absolutely clueless. Always Reactive rather than proactive. 

So behind the times and evidence base when it comes to teaching and learning.
