A typical day involves collecting samples from various points around the site and then analysing them in the laboratory.  A fair amount of walking is involved so you need to be physically fit for this role. Management are very friendly and approachable, as are most of the staff at the Bury St Edmunds site.  Whilst working on shift you are made to feel like part of the team, instead of just some temp.  A can do attitude and strong team ethos is evident across the site although you do need a good sense of humour at times!  The hardest part of the job is the repetitive nature of the job/tests which can be draining on a night shift.  The most enjoyable part of the job is you get to manage your own time so once your up to speed, you can pretty much plan your own days work.

10 years ago this was a great place to work but successive changes in senior management and strategy has destroyed the morale of the workforce.
In recent years a cut costs at any cost culture has arisen amongst the top echelons and this has resulted in some disastrous decision making.
 A failure to invest in the basic infrastructure of the plant while slashing engineering budgets to the bone has lead to a situation were every day brings a new crisis with the very real threat of failing customers being ever present. 

Ever increasing production and efficiency targets coupled with a massively unreliable plant only serves to increase the pressure on an already overburdened workforce.

finding the office for the agency, once found, everything ok

i managed to collate a work sheet to help with the job  i was tasked with - by expanding this to cover all the information required

There were numerous ways to advance as an Engineer at British Sugar. All i have to do is work with my manager to develop in the right direction. I think British Sugar is great for this. I will recommend to anyone who wants good job security. 

However, British Sugar is an old company and they are not very innovative. I can say that coming from a design background, I have noticed that British sugar is a typical engineering firm that believes "if it is not broken, you don't fix it"

Collection of samples every hour becomes quite repetitive with a lot of walking so a good level of fitness required. Shift work so 2 days then 2 nights and 4 days off means weekends only come every 8 weeks. 
Shift teams are fun and good to work with but poor management who don't care about the seasonal workers. Expect you to be on call in case of cover on your first two days off but not paid extra to be available. 
The pay is the only reason most seasonal workers stay for the duration of the contract.

British Sugar was an excellent company to work for originally, but now it has become increasing difficult to work, moral is at rock bottom and there is no leadership from the management,
The work life structure was forcibly changed with a you will do it or go attitude, I am glad I have left and would not recommend this company to anyone.

The people who work there are extremely capable but the management is not.

Tiring but interesting work that provides excellent support from the management team and coworkers. The work is not too difficult but there's enough to keep you occupied whilst still allowing time for breaks. The way your work day pans out is largely down to how much effort you put into it which provides a sense of reward and keeps you on your toes so that the time goes quickly.

It was very good  to work in that environment  and the culture was good

Busy as usual just got your job done

Long difficult shifts encroaching into weekends. Worklife balance poor. Pay used to be good but has been eroded, now average for shift pattern. Immediate managers ok, but, managers above clueless. Physically but more importantly mentally draining. Lack of investment has contributed to a very difficult work environment.  A shame because used to be a decent job. Now shedding experienced staff and knowledge not being replaced.
