Compton-Care

I had high hopes for my time here but I quickly became aware of the issues. Theypay packet is not worth your mental health, in fact many office based staff at all different levels are prioritising their mental health and resigning with no other job lined up. I've really struggled with my time here and I've raised issues with management and even HR but there has been no improvements. It's such a shame because Compton Care are such a fantastic charity for local people who are suffering with terminal illness but my experience from the inside has really put me off. 

Issues:
* Lower level staff and Mid-level managers have to battle with Directors who have outdated views. Not a forward thinking place at all. 
* Slowest HR with insanely outdated views. I've never experienced anything like it anywhere before. 
* Apparently a hybrid role with agile working policy in place but I'm in the office pretty much 5 days a week and working way past 5:30pm. If you have kids, you'll be favoured for flexibility, which isn't fair. 
* No real wellbeing support or practices. No cultural diversity. Lots of  ticking the box activity.
* Toxic culture, a lot of office politics amongst some teams. Can get very catty. 
* Overworked and underappreciated. 
* A hierarchy exists here and its horrible to experience.
* Ridiculous deadlines. Full day tasks that need a lot of background work expected to be done in a few mins with little information. 

The good bits:
* I'd be lost without the supportive few I have here (fortunate that my team are angels). 
* Lovely grounds and on site cafe. 
* Good pay (but again not worth your mental health).

There's a lot of talk from the top about positive change and becoming more "with the times" but little evidence of that actually happening. It's been a soul destroying experience.

Working with the lovely people in my department 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lack of understanding from senior management. Unreasonable expectations from senior management. Lack of training. Staff required to cover for constant staff shortage.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Upstairs downstairs culture. On my last day with the company I didn’t see any management staff. No recognition of service to the organisation or appreciation.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Constantly being on the back foot and putting out fires. Constantly disappointing patients with cancellations of appointments. Staff shortages, equipment shortages and clinic room shortages created a lack of job satisfaction.

I was over the moon to secure a role at CC but within less than a year I realised that all was not as it should be. It’s a difficult culture to explain but what you see is most definitely not what you get. The people are amazing, they’re so dedicated to the cause, they genuinely care but the leadership team have a very different agenda. They might call it ‘modernisation’ which was needed but the way they went about it meant many good people either ‘lost’ their jobs or left. In all my working life I’ve never experienced anything quite like it and I hope I never will again. It was a traumatic experience, which I never thought I’d say about work. I’m scarred by what they did to me and those around me. I would not recommend anyone works here but if you do, then be on your guard and don’t trust anyone. 

I worked at Compton for less over a year .  The work environment was poor with  managers who didn't understand the supporters . Some were working almost fully remote when office and clinical  staff were on site  doing the work which was bad for morale . Managers spend over  half the week in meetings providing no strategy and were unwilling to listent to new ideas from direct reports . Staff over a band 5 could work from home however some were only on site once a week ( not a great example to staff) . There is no point reporting issues as inept managers  who would  twist words and took no accountbilty for failures in targets which was regular in my area . The service users and volunteers are fantastic and the gardens were beautiful.  There are some great staff at Compton but the experiences knocked my confidence. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Job satisfaction, helping the charity and customers + donors too.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There isn't really anything that's stressful.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Excellent. The team works well together, all chipping in and camaraderie is good. Fully inclusive. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I work half days assisting customers at the till, welcoming customers and keeping the shop tidy. I replenish stock as it becomes available and as necessary I help sort, price and steam items to display. I usually work with 1 or 2 other members of staff, always 1 senior who I can refer to when needed.

Really supportive environment for those who want to progress and really make a difference.
High standards of clinical care quite rightly so make sure you feel strongly about providing the patient with the best experience  if you are join the team.
I don't really recognise some of these comments here as its not my experience and I'm not leaving.
you get the pay and employment benefits but without all the bureaucracy and toxicity of the NHS but it is a charity so donations have to spent really wisely on patient care.

a typical day would be the same role without being asked or given a chance to show different skills or chance to interact with customers. The manager also worked in the shop but was unfriendly and unapproachable. It seemed the longer you had worked there, you were part of the clique’. Making it hard to fit in and this had a sense of a toxic environment. There was no management support for example , checking in with staff to see if they are okay or if they are enjoying their volunteer roles. 

The staff across the organisation are amazing. They make it worth going into work for. A huge divide exists between management and staff particularly admin staff who are unsupported and stretched to their capacity. No opportunity to speak up or ask for help because if you do you will be punished for doing so within a threatening and bullyish environment. Do not work here if you want to preserve your mental health and value your hard work.

When I got the job at Compton care I was so happy. My expectations of a hospice and Compton care was very high. Compton promise the world in interview and fail to deliver when employed. Staff are amazing, along with patients and supporting families however managements attitude and lack of support let it down. Management can be very degrading of staff,alot of conflicting policy's at Compton. If I knew what I knew now I would of stayed in the NHS. 

I have always enjoyed working for Compton Care, as a medium sized charity it is both well supported within the West Midlands but also small enough for individual achievements to get noticed. Upper management is always supportive and is just a quite fun place to work! Salary isn't fantastic but on par with the bigger charity retail chains (if not better).
