After being nearly 30 years in the industry, I feel its time not only to progress my career, but create stability in my future. This is impossible while working for a media company who's main focus and drive is within traditional media. Its is obviously to all that the heavily declining market is starting to catch hold.
Since starting within the business, I have learnt so much. From customer relationships, figures, research, but most of all is that companies success are built on great teams and its staff. No matter who is at the top, if the team isn't right and hungry, then success will be limited. based on a great team, DCT Media has created a hard working and accountable culture. Of course, there are days when there is anger, upset and frustration. But the team ethic is simply and to do the best we can for the company.
The hardest part of the job for me is simply the knowledge that the traditional media market is declining and declining fast.
The most enjoyable thing for me in a commercial room is based on two things. Staff enjoyment and staff making money. If both are in line, then both with only create success for the company.

DC Thomson is a good place to work for people getting a start and the people you work alongside are great.

The issue is with higher management and the board. A family-run company, the board are a group of ancient old men who couldn't tell you how platforms like Twitter, TikTok, Instagram or Facebook work, and how to engage audiences through them, yet they are the ones guiding the future of the company. 

The recent layoffs have led to an odd structure, with no-one steering the ship and a tonne of extra work loaded onto remaining employees. They like to run things on a tight shoestring and don't invest in any of their brands, unless it's their cherished heritage brands like The Beano, which they've chucked millions at.

The company are completely and wholy unprepared for the digital transformation taking place across the media landscape, and will be dead in the water in the next five to ten years. Avoid like the plague.

The ground staff are the saving grace at DC Thomson. There are people here who care deeply about what they do, and support their teams and colleagues to achieve it. I’ve learned a lot from my colleagues while I’ve been here - which is good as formal training is negligible.

If you’re considering a career here be prepared - senior staff will work everyone from mid-level management down into the ground. Staff are regularly signed off with mental health issues and senior management don’t address the conditions that caused it. There’s very little progression or variety in a day, it’s easy to feel like a cog in the machine. Especially when you’re treated like exactly that.

They do feed us occasionally, however. Small perk. 

Very inward business. Lots of people who have worked here for a long time and lots related to one another. This created a really strange culture and politics which was difficult for an outsider to work within. . I worked in DCT Media and they haven't really progressed much in the last 10 years. Still strugging to keep up with digital. The products they have were at least 15 years out of date. Old websites etc. Leadership non existent and commission structure poor in comparison to other businesses. People in management jobs becuase they'd been there a long time. It was slow paced chaos.

I liked to work as I had a nice internal team and people were really supportive. Management was located in the head office and for this reason, you felt no support when you needed it. The wage was very low and no much of benefits either. On day to day basis job was nice and easy, but sometimes you felt no options for development as no training scheme and higher level teams do not share their knowledge.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Good employers and staff. If you can do the job, you'll be valued.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It's non-stop but the day passes quickly. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It's friendly enough and staff are consulted more than any other employer I've known.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very busy - there are deadlines to meet.

A totally different company to the one I joined in 2006. It was a fair, pleasant environment. Only criticism was for a media company the communication could have been better at times as could wages ! However this was balanced with good working conditions especially at their new offices in Aberdeen. 

A typical day at work is me getting up at 6;30 and to get ready for the job,and every day is the same just deliver papers through a door.The management is very transparent and helpful.The hardest part of the job was getting up in the morning and that was really easy and the most enjoyable part of the job was getting to meet all my customers.

Worked there for 26 years and made some brilliant friends. There was some pressure to reach targets but never to the point of making me miserable. I had an amazing boss who worked just as hard as her team and was completely approachable. I had lots of fun working with a great team, I think I laughed every day.  I would have no hesitation recommending them.

Remote working, interesting industry

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
No job security, lack of management engagement with employees, smoke and mirrors culture.

Work environment is good. Nice offices.
