Went for an interview, did a trial hour, and they seemed happy with my two years of experience and ability to work and offered me a job. After two days, two three hour shifts, they let me go from the position with no warning because of “not having enough experience” and not being able to “keep up with the pace.” I walked in to do my shift with no knowledge of what was about to happen, and walked out five minutes later unemployed. I was not a distasteful or rude employee, I constantly thanked my coworkers for their help in training me, I was constantly on my feet and looking for things to do, I was nice and catering to customers constantly. This did not matter to them. They will only see you for your level of skill in two part-time shifts and not for your character. 
They hired me knowing I’d never worked an industrial coffee machine and had little experience in a coffee shop job, and would have to be trained. You’ll be taught things at a pace that is far too quick, then expected to execute it perfectly immediately. 
Steer ABSOLUTELY clear of this job if you want something serious and long term. It’s minimum wage and they will get rid of you without hesitation if you’re not immediately perfect and settled in on the first two shifts. Absolutely not worth the time, the coworkers you work with will be unnecessarily sour if you do something wrong as a trainee too. 
I was desperate for a job, but I believe you should never be desperate enough to consider working here. As an 18 year old that chose to go straight into work, this job alone has made me reconsider university, so that I don’t get stuck in this position again. 

Managers would typically hound employees to complete tasks far too quickly than is realistic and would get angry when politely explained this would not be possible. They terminated an excessive number of employees' contracts due to vague reasoning. They provided unstable hours, making work / life balance difficult to plan and finances difficult to manage. They would also constantly demand that workers drop everything they are doing (even in a rush) to make them food or a coffee - and would distract the workers in the meantime by coming behind the counter and moving around apparatus from where it was supposed to be for our own efficiency, whilst also complaining to the workers that they were not being fast enough, whilst being the main cause of the interruptions. There are many more complaints I could give about the managers at this branch, however the employees were all fantastic.

Not the best place to work if you have a life outside of work...

Hours were all over the place, I was asked when I was employed how many hours I would like and agreed on 32...when I received my contract papers however it said 20 for some reason? 

Therefore, I was unable to get the hours I needed in order to have something to live off or sometimes I would work overtime as I had no other option but to cover for people to the point I was unable to have any work life balance whatsoever. 

Pay was not enough considering I had a management position, I was only on £12 an hour which is low in my opinion. 

Manager did not allow us as supervisors to take care of the store without their supervision, even though that was part of our job description. 

You would get 0 sick pay whatsoever and were not allowed to call in sick without your hours or job getting threatened. 

Please take careful consideration when applying.

The management of the esquires in Northampton isn’t great. The managers don’t really listen to their staff. 
The rota isn’t done in advance you find out what you are working only a few hours before. 
You can tell that management only cares about making money and nothing else.
When trying to “complain” about something the management won’t listen to you and will tell you to complain to a supervisor that is only one person and isn’t always in shift. 
Overall some of the staff is very friendly however some people get away with doing the bare minimum while others work the double for them. 
Also pay day isn’t always the set date and sometimes there’s problems with payments.
During busy periods and if only 2 people on and struggling sometimes the managers are present and instead of jumping in to help they are sat on their laptops.


What is the best part of working at the company?
Delicious food and coffee on shift, obviously!! Good company values, honest and hardworking ethics, cares about product quality and how customers receive products, inclusive, welcoming and all-around lovely company and environment to work for.  

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Nothing really is stressful about working for the company; as expected, coffee shops get really busy and hectic and that’s probably the most stressful thing. Lunch time rushes and staff shortages 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Friendly, accepting, welcoming, enthusiastic and passionate and coffee and staff progress 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
As a supervisor, I was in charge of shop set up and food preparation, staff rota’s, cleaning schedules and paperwork. And serving with a smile and quality food and coffee

The company overall cares very little for what their staff has to say. The 0 hour contracts are as unreliable as a straw with holes in. Even if they promise you 40+ hours a week they never give you them or if they do it's very rarely a thing, managers leave it between staff members to deal with any issues instead of actually being a manager and sitting down with the staff to discuss problems they have. 

The main boss seemed more interested in keeping money for holidays then paying out for things the shop genuinely needed. Stuff constantly breaking down and whatever else. 

Training is a bit up the wall also. Theres never really a clear answer to anything.


Very repetative and boring job overall.

Ive worked in esquires coffee hoping that it will be a welcoming company
However as i came some of the staffs did introduce themeselves and helped me but was not quite sure on how to train a new staff. As a new employee they did not train me properly or give me some advice. It is a very unprofessional place to work in as I was employed they did not give me a contract which in a business should be the first thing to do when employeeing someone, did not give me any information on how much I get played or when I get paid. I had to mention to the manager about this problem to sought this out. The manager did not let me do anything and would not train me properly. They have very less staffs woeking so it becomes very stressful. They underpay staffs aswell.

Having worked for a length of time I am so glad to be out of this work environment where you are not appreciated for your hard work and taken advantage of by "manager".
Very long hours, extremely physical, carrying heavy products up and down 2 flights of stairs. 
Majority of customers are lovely and appreciate that you are working in a fast paced environment with not enough staff.
Started off as a coffee house but felt more like a fast food service without a functioning kitchen by the time I left.
On the plus side the other employees were on the whole lovely and as stressed as we were we still managed to have a laugh and are still good friends.

working with the team is a joy as I got on with everyone. There were no hard parts to my job as long as we worked as a team to get through the day and my job was pretty much easy. I learned alot about myself I was alittle scared when I first started but as I grew to know everyone and the local people that came into the cafe I started to love the job more and more. A typical day at work would be start off slow then get the midday rush then the evening rush, I just enjoy it being busy the day seems to run alot smoother. When I first started at the job I didn't really know who my manager was until I started getting aprisles for doing a great job from my manger and co-workers.

Whilst working at Esquires, for the two weeks i was put on the dishwasher, making sure there was enough cups and cutlery for the shop to run smoothly. Whilst doing that i was getting taught how to make coffees, although i wasn't allowed to use the machine as i was under age, i still got taught how to do it, i also learned how to make the smoothies, milkshakes and various meals that were available. The people i worked with were a joy to work with, they were all lovely people and i fit in instantly, the hardest part of the job was when there was a member of staff off sick and it got busy, it was easily managed but other than that it was plain sailing. The most enjoyable part was gaining experience and meeting new people.
