At first, i loved the job. Then after a few weeks i was trained on late shifts but still told to come in early which meant long shifts of hard labour. I was only allowed a 20 minute (unpaid) break for over 8 hours work & when working on a late shift, was still expected to clean all my rooms in the time frame (which is not enough time as it is) while being at the becond call of reception to run errands. The manager of the hotel constantly checked your rooms and downgraded everyone working, like he thought of us as stupid. He also expected us to have perfection in each room, even when we had a time limit hanging over us. There was no consideration for how people felt. I had one day off as i was very ill and everytime i mentioned i felt under the weather, it was used against me. The later shifts were not shared out equally between people like it was suggested in my interview, but instead were “shared” between two people, myself and another worker who quit just a week before me. The week my coworker quit, i was made to do extra shifts and work way over what i had agreed when i started and was told by most staff i wouldnt get paid for the extra time (which at the time of writing this, i am still yet to find out). All employees are grumpy, they’ve all been in the job for a long time and all have the same mindset of “im here to do this then go home” and you dont recieve any help from anyone and have to figure pretty much everything out as you go along. Management constantly say how they’re down people but never seem to be employing or even advertising. I tried getting my friend a job and was told their site had taken down our hotel’s job as it “wasn’t being clicked on enough”?!  You get two days off a week and can normally ask for which days you want off. However, when i asked for a day off for an appointment that had taken me two months to get, i was told they needed me in as they had no cover & that my appointment wasn’t important and that i could easily rearrange. The equipment is old and there is no consideration for getting new equipment at all. Physically, the work is demanding but you get used to it over time. Emotionally, you slowly lose your sense of worth and become trapped in your own thoughts.

I was working for HOTELCARE in Birmingham UK for 4 months. 

On normal day you come in, use fingerprint machine to clock in. Office is very messy and not organised. You sign in because they don't trust you, you take your key and go clean. You are overworked, you have to clean 3-4 rooms in one hour. You sometimes have 15 rooms to clean in 5 hours and sometimes you clean 20 rooms in 5 hours.

You go over 5 to 6 hours, they complain that you are very slow. They are always yelling. They make new rules every week, and when you want a day off, they  threaten you saying they will take your next week schedule and make you OFF. 

You go to London office for 3 days training which they promise to pay you but never do, always making excuses.

Holiday pay is a joke. You take your holidays then when you look at your wages, they never pay you. You ask your manager, sometimes they forget to put it in the system and always say you will get it in your next pay. Until now I never receive my pay for holiday. One week is gone, they don't want to pay me.

They always mess up your wages, removing days you work and tell payroll you never work on those days. Your wages are always short, always!

You speak to your head housekeeper and her manager who is operation manager, and they both always say they'll take care of it and you should receive it in your next payslip.

The head manager from London always come to the hotel to visit, but his main reason to visit our hotel is for fixing the problems. When you tell him your problems, he always say I will fix, I just emailed the payroll office, I just emailed London office, and you will get your money in the next pay. next pay, next pay

No Uniforms but expected to buy certain clothes to look presentable even thouh you have no money to spend.

It is very shocking because London office is very nice. Everyone looks very happy and the area is very clean. You come to the hotel in Birmingham, everything is dirty. Broken tables, dirty lockers, we are treated like rats. They take all of our money to spend for London office.

ITS horrible, they don't care for you or for your team.

First day I was given extremely poor training. I wasn't told clearly what I would be doing and what to do in certain situations. We ended up rushing just so the person training could clock out for 4 hours on their rota and not be pushed to do 8.

Second day I was made to do rooms where I found out the staff are horribly under equipped be it for cleaning supplies, cloths and linen (which had to be used to clean the bathrooms on top). Rooms had to be cleaned in 26 minutes which meant the rooms weren't actually cleaned but made presentable to avoid complaints.

Third day I was made to work all over the place instead of focusing on linen porter work. Management couldn't even get delivery times right for linen and then had the gall to say I wasn't doing linen despite bringing a full trolley through my entire shift and emptying it and would have gotten this all done if it weren't for being made to waste hours for other tasks they couldn't even be concrete where going to happen.

The elevators are usually faulty meaning more time is wasted getting the elevator to work just so you can get to another floor for collect linen. Your rota for the week is inaccurate expect to be made to do 8 hours a day despite written for 4 hours on a zero hour contract that says nowhere that you can't turn those hours down.

I feel bad for coworkers still there but there are some genuinely good people just getting by but also plan to leave.  



Very busy days and not much time to finish each room to high standards but you just keep doing your best of the best… My biggest motivation was getting the mortgage for home with my partner so I just had to force myself and self motivate with that constantly.  After a few years I was completely burned out though. Since there was not many workers after pandemic my shift were sometimes over 10hrs a few days in a row with barely any brakes and 30 rooms done completely, most with 2 double beds, often in really bad conditions… (none stay over). When more workers were hired you were always getting more rooms to do (espacially in the next hotel after that) since they knew you were better and much quicker worker…so some people were just earning the very same or more money for much less rooms/work… really unfair and demanding. Sometimes you have to wait coz none of your rooms are empty and the other ppl got only one or nothing to swap with you as well… so it can be really annoying since it’s pretty impossible to catch up on later, depends of the mess in the room. The one at hotels in center usually are awful!
The only plus is that l’ve met plenty of really nice people in a couple of those hotels. 
I would say it’s a job for young ppl. Could not ever do that again with my sore back and aging body. If you are into cleanliness, don’t know what you wanna do yet in your life, are young, fast and got a good attention to the detail you can go for it. I’m done.

The workplace culture is friendly, with a strong sense of teamwork, especially during busy periods. The hardest part of the job is handling a high volume of rooms with limited time. However, the most enjoyable part is seeing the immediate results of a well-cleaned space and knowing that my work contributes to a positive guest experience.

I worked here for 4 months and during that time, I made a firm decision on the company. At the interview I was told I would be offered a part time supervisor role alongside my houskeeper role. On my first day, I had no training whatsoever on how the site works, how rooms should look like etc and I never had any of the supervisor training that they promised me; leaving me always being told off for something I didn’t know. The lack of staff showed, especially when one cleaner had to leave earlier, leaving me with more workload than I could hold. The hours are ok. There was multiple weeks where I would only be working between 1-3 hours a day which isn’t great to live by. There was only one proper cleaning cupboard which meant you had to always carry your work bucket and all other equipment up and down the stairs which is completely tiring. When I gave in my notice and on my last working day, my employer still asked me to come into work the following day because they “forgot” I was leaving. I found that quite unprofessional and quite rude. Pay is good but you are never guaranteed proper hours and the work is just too much for some to handle, especially if you’re working alone. 

As soon as they took over holiday inn housekeeping department last October we knew it was all downhill from there...n how right the team was. 0 hour contracts....awful communication between managers/ head office and staff...meaning none at all. They don't care about family life outside work...if work isn't your number one priority well don't expect to last long....over the space of the year I watched the once happy housekeeping team be taken out with English after English being fired or resigned and other cultures brought in who would work for less and put up with their disgusting behaviour. I left after 11 happy years at holiday inn feeling mistreated and disgusted in the way the team had been let down. I'm still currently fighting to receive the holidays I'm owed and also three weeks I'm owed however they refuse to give me my money....I'm currently having words with my solicitor on this as Im not the first person to be treated like this nor will I be the last....I would recommend anyone to stay away from this company unless u like being walked on, made to feel like something the higher up have stepped in and generally like Being let down....HotelCare are a awful company to work for!!!!!!

My wife had a bad experience with this company. Her contract was respected only 3 months, after that they didn’t care at all. She worked sometimes even 6 days per week and every month her salary was shortened. She had colleagues that worked even without day off and they was not paid what they suppose to receive. Is frustrating to see you are working and you don’t get the money that you deserve. She was paid in one month only for 3 weeks, and they admitted they made a mistake and promised her they will corect this error at the next payment, but they didn’t. She took even less money than previous month. And she is not the only one. They are using peoples thinking they are stupid and they don’t know what rights they have. When you address to them and you ask why they didn’t made the right payment they are passing the problem from one to another. I am very disappointed and disgusted that in 21st century there are still companies that are using the employees like slaves. If you care about you and your mental health don’t chose Hotelcare.

The job probably may of been ok if they did not have such a turnover of staff, which made the job really difficult, when there is not enough staff and there are lots of rooms to clean etc, it is really hard going, you are supposed to stop for a break, when i worked there half the room attendants didnt, because you were given far too many rooms to clean, and they have to be cleaned to a high standard, and pay attention to detail, which is impossible in the time you have to do all what you are given, used come out of there every day literally drained and dehydrated, where i was on the go all the time, just about enough time to go to the toilet.  I would not recommend this job to anyone at all, most definitely not.  Iwas only there a week, i have done lots of cleaning in my time, in busy roles, and managed to stick most things out if the job was not all that good, but this was impossible at  this place.  I was told on my training, a lot of people do a week-end there and do not come back to the job, obviously because they have had enough in that short time.

First - the turn over of staff baffled me when I started but after some time I worked it out. 
Second - The on site manager was horribly toxic & is a bully. Many have left because of this. 
Hard work was rewarded with more rooms & then you were expected to go help others on top of that (though some staff members are were never asked to help?!) 
The hours were uncertain and because the weekends always seem to be busy, it was rare that you could actually get a day in the weekend off. 
Staff were always pushed by manager to go quicker & quicker which made most feel like they were never good enough at the job. 
Was not comfortable with top management at the site but supervisors at the time were kind & did their best to make the day as stress free as possible. 
Only stayed as long as I could because I needed the job. But it wasn’t worth the stress. If I could rate 0 stars on some things I would.
