As a part-time member of staff (12-16 hours per week), working here was good.

Most days aren't that busy and you often find yourself standing around doing nothing, which can make the day feel long and not worth your time.

Day-to-day jobs included serving a couple of customers a day (some days we didn't even get a single sale), stocking shelves, steaming clothes, cleaning the shelves, organising clothes by size, changing price tickets, and hoovering at the end of the day.

In my experience, I wasn't trained enough. I got told how to do things on my first day and then was left to my own devices. When it came to answering the phone, the manager, or more experienced member of staff answered the phone, and if someone wanted to return something, another member of staff would do it, which made me feel a bit useless since I wasn't properly shown how to do it. Was shown an information book about the different types of leather so I had something to say to the customers about the leather of the product they were buying but, again, this was shown to me on the first day and never again. I was also only shown how to apply a discount on my first day and when it came to days where there was an extra % off something, I wouldn't know how to do it, or if someone had a blue light card or a discount for some reason, I had to teach myself - which isn't right.

There was a lot of encouragement to speak to the customers that walked into the shop, for example, if they were looking at a jacket. However, most customers who came in just wanted to browse and didn't want us to talk to them. I believe there was too much encouragement to talk to the customers, I know that if I were a customer, I'd just want to look around and not be bothered by staff, and will ask if I want to know more about a product.

The leather cleaning/protection products were behind the till and, when a customer bought a leather product, I was told that I'd have to try and promote the cleaning/protection products, which most customers did not want. I believe that it would have been better to have the cleaning/protection products on display, rather than behind the till where a customer can't just look at it and decide for themselves.

Management were nice, I got given extra shifts over Christmas and New Year which I'd asked for. However, was told I wasn't allowed any drinks on the shop floor (only a bottle with a closed lid: no glasses or mugs with cold or hot drinks in), or even a book to read at quieter times (I know I'm there to work, but on times when there was nothing else to do, it was spent counting down the hours and minutes until the end of the day!).

Uniform was to dress nicely and appropriately, preferably wearing Lakeland Leather products. Got a discount on any clothes that were to be used as uniform (I never bought any because I wasn't fully told on how it worked and didn't understand it, and it was rare that I worked a shift with the manager to ask them about it). On anything else that wasn't going to be uniform, there was a lower discount on it.

The part I enjoyed most about the job was probably steaming the clothes, which sounds boring but there wasn't a lot to do every day!

This place is a good place to work if you're looking for part-time work. I believe that full-time would be a little bit boring and you'd want to look elsewhere for a job. The pay was just the normal pay rate for a clothing shop in The Lake District and isn't something to really boast about.

It was an okay Place to work, good for part time whilst at university. A typical day included replenishing sold items, serving customers on the cash desk, general cleaning and helping customers. On quieter shifts the shifts did drag and there was not much to do but stand around. The culture at the store did really depend on who you were working with. Management could be improved by the manager as there was issues with majority of the holiday I took and the way the store manager spoke to employees could be majorly improved.
The hardest pay of the job was getting to grasp with the leather knowledge and the use of the till.
The most enjoyable Part was the other staff and various customers.


People I worked with were friendly, hard working and made me feel like a part of a team. However, unpleasant work environment when manager was in the store. The manager is unprofessional and gossiped about me behind my back. Manager made me cry after asking intrusive personal questions and showed no sympathy. Lovely work experience and staff, a shame that the manager was unjust to a new employee. Little support from head office when I raised the issues stated above. 

I have just retired after 5 years at Lakeland Bowness. I'm really sorry to be leaving and would have stayed forever but we are moving away. The company is really lovely to work for, with a friendly team, good working conditions and excellent discounts. I always felt that my opinions mattered and very valued. The girls in the Bowness shop are fantastic and I'll always think of them as friends

The actual work isnt too bad its a lot of standing around and waiting, I was told to figure out ways to pretend to look busy, VERY cliquey and the manager makes the vibe horrible. Some of the staff were lovely but others were rude or stand offish if you dont fit a certain standard would say avoid if you are any kind of neurodivergent 

A professional mini department store that specialises in Leather goods.  You  spend time working on the various zones. You swap from cash desk, leather jackets, handbags, ladies concessions and mens concessions.

This was not a workplace where I felt valued. It was driven by materialism and pressure on customers to buy products that I didn't value.

Working at Lakeland is such a great experience. All the staff are extremely friendly and made me feel part of the team from day one. The job includes a variety of roles which makes every day different yet just as fun.

Good for part time work, would recommend being strong minded as it was sometimes a toxic environment. However the rest of the staff were lovely and the job was relatively easy.

Great place to work, staff all work together as a team. Excellent staff discount s and bonuses, interesting work and ability to gain product knowledge.
