I have worked a various levels and if you go in at the bottom, the pay is not bad for the area and the work is rewarding. Most people stay happily in these roles if not ambitious or needing more pay/hours. If you move into a management role, depending what size team you have, the work load and delivery expectation is often unrealistic and stressful. The money isn't great for the responsibility and last time they increased pay the lowest wage increased by a whopping ten percent (good), but only 1 percent or nothing for the lower tier managers with all the stress - whose pay isn't that great anyway. It makes the company sound good, managers getting less than others, but in reality it is unfair, and unsurprisingly their turnover of staff is high is in some areas. If you jump further up the ladder the stress levels are about the same but better pay. Some roles are good, some are not. 

The job is enjoyable and fulfilling. You have a genuine opportunity to make a difference to a local community.

There is plenty of variation and you are encouraged to come up with creative ways to engage with the community.

Management is excellent - supportive without being overbearing, provides plenty of training, development opportunities and encouragement.

The pay/holidays is fine but not great - but it's a charity that relies primarily on local government funding, so all things considered it's pretty good.

Part-time roles, unusual working hours inc. weekends and no remote working are all inherent to the type of work. Impossible to avoid in this line of work, but can still be inconvenient.

Worked for Devon Libraries for 33 years and Libraries Unlimited until 2020.

For most of my career I felt a valued member of the team. The work is complex at times but we put customers at the heart of everything we do and that makes for a great organisation. Clearly Libraries have had a bumpy ride over the years but the fact that the service survives, reinvents itself and pushes forward, bears testament to the hard working staff at its core.

Pay, hours and holiday entitlements are not as good as when part of Devon County Council but still a nice place to work.

Great friendly colleagues working hard across the charity - nice to work somewhere with a social purpose. Small teams working behind the scenes so if you’re a finance/HR/marketing etc professional it’s a good opportunity to get involved in different projects and broaden your skills, which you don’t get in a bigger company. Pay and benefits aren’t fantastic but it is a charity so is somewhat to be expected - opportunities to learn somewhat makes up for it. Flat structure limits opportunities to progress internally.

Friendly and supportive.  Best job I've ever had. Feel very supported in my role and have had the opportunity to grow. I have felt welcome since day one and would definitely recommend working here. I have a passion for books and I love the fact it is a charity. I wouldn't hesitate to apply for this company. The only changes I would make is more pay but then that applies to most jobs!

Varied role with lots of opportunity to work with different aspects, both within the county and on a National level.

Fair degree of scope given to development managers. 

Well integrated with other organisations so lots of opportunity for collaboration.

A lot is expected for pay that is lower than retail.  No perks. Having said that, it’s pleasant enough and not rocket science.  Not a bad job for students or people who are only looking for something to keep them going for a while. 

Supportive management and great working conditions. Rewarding work with a wide variety of responsibility.  Highly recommended as a great employer with lovely colleagues!

The community of the library is very comforting and it is easy to feel safe there . Very lovely and caring staff I have never had any problems there at all.

Libraries unlimited is a fantastic place to work with a great community feel. They are always thinking of library users and staff. I Highly recommend!!
