Many agencies and employers pay holiday leave based on the amount of time you have worked, up until the date you need off. And that’s a reasonable system that most employers use. It is called the accrued system, to accrue holiday means you have to work for a bit to earn a bit of time off. This works in conjunction with the U.K statutory entitlement. Or in other words it works with the amount of holiday the government says you are allowed each year which is currently 28 days, so if you work 5 days a week for a month you would have accrued 2.33 days of holiday, that’s just less than two and a half days a month. It’s easy to work out. You simply share 28 days amongst 12 months.

And a nice time for most people to take their leave would be in the summer perhaps when the kids are off school. It’s when most people book, between June and august. So by June, the 6th month you would have accrued 24 weeks’ worth of annual leave that’s 14 days fully paid leave days or 13.98 to be exact. But who cares about the pence, that’s enough for you to take a modest two weeks off and still have a few days left over. And let’s be honest most people only take 2 weeks off.

But it’s not that straight forward with meridian, and they don’t like to make it known or even admit that there is a catch. Which means you will get back from your holiday to find that you have not been paid in full, and if you’re not expecting this and most people won’t be, it could end up costing you a lot more. What meridian doesn’t tell you is that they will only pay you for a week’s worth of holiday at a time.

Until you have complained several times about not receiving pay while on annual leave, it won’t be clear why they haven’t paid you, according to meridian they claim that they will work out your holiday leave using the accrued system but then base it on the last 12 weeks. According to meridian this means that they literally only allow you to receive 12 weeks’ worth of accrued pay. That’s 3 months, it works out at 7 days paid leave, but even this figure is questionable. From my personal experience of several years with this company as a 40 hour week agency worker I have never been able to receive more than 6 days holiday pay in any one booking, and every time I have followed this up with a complaint I have been fobbed off with the excuse “you have received all your accrued time” I have even highlighted the fact that I am legally entitled to 28 days fully paid leave, to receive the reply “yes I confirm you are entitled to 28 days leave, but you must accrue them” clearly I am unable to achieve any ware close to 28 days.

To conclude I wonder whether meridian are breaking the law because as of yet they have not answered my question “how would it be possible for me to receive my full 28 days holiday pay, could you explain to me how to go about this, do I have to take a week off every 12 weeks or perhaps take 2 days off every month” I suspect meridian are simply working the system for some reason, and the only reason I can think of is that they are able to keep the left over holiday pay for themselves and although being an insignificant amount it becomes obvious that if this is generally done to everyone then it is a substantial extra revenue generator.

My position as on site Manager involves complete management of Site Representatives, as well as over one hundred Meridian Associates at the core of the business. There are also payroll factors to create, manage and submit, as well as system analysis between agency and client for more prospective temp associates to be considered. This is imperative as the clients needs and expectations are high, so my excellent standard of overall knowledge of the business is essential in keeping abreast of the daily challenges. Communication throughout is essential via both my co-workers as well as senior management and HR teams within the clients network. The most difficult part of the job is issuing disciplinary proceedures to associates, as well as often releasing some individuals from their positions, for reasons beyond your control. However, the enjoyable side of the job is progressing individuals personally onto success and a permanent position with the client, offering security and opportunity as well as increased self confidence and a brighter outlook for the individual.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
You get too many complaints all the time. You can try your absolute hardest and you will still be told that you have done something wrong or haven’t done something right. Cleaning is very very hard work, you will get asked to clean so many classrooms and toilets in so little time, so it is quite intense. The employer will not pick up any phone calls either, if you have any queries or you need to get in touch regarding holidays, sick pay or anything even in  general so please do keep that in mind. You cannot also make any complaints if you feel that the mess has gotten too out of control to the point where you cannot even clean it.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The colleagues will be nice to you and extremely friendly. You will all bond over the hard work that you do everyday. The supervisor will not even feel like a supervisor to you.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Every day is pretty much quite repetitive. Trying to get the main tasks done everyday without fail, upto perfect standard within the short time-frame given. You are expected to empty the bins, hoover, wipe the tables, toilets and mop at THE VERY LEAST. You will sweat a lot, and worry that you won’t get everything done it time, as there is far too much to do. You also need to wipe the glass doors, ensure all the taps are cleaned, then dry and sparkling. You need to ensure all toilets are not blocked, toilet rolls are replaced when needed and make sure there is always soap available.

I’ve been registered with meridian business support in the Newcastle branch for 4years and I’ve only once been given employment and that was supposedly for 3 full months at full time work and I was given one full week of employment and after that they kept fobbing me off with every single excuse you could imagine and the food factory I was employed to work for kept asking for me to come in to work but the agency kept saying that there was no available shifts for me regardless of the factory requesting me. They are the utmost worst agency ever I’ve had the pleasure to be registered with and since then, I’ve been phoning the place for work and still keep fobbing me off with just as many excuses as before.
Anyone wanting to get work with them,will only take on the people who aren’t any good or people who have NEVER BEEN QUALIFIED FOR THAT TYPE OF WORK, if you have qualifications in the work you want to get, good luck as you will be messed around beyond belief and they are nothing but a complete JOKE. A total waste of your time and money that agency is. Good luck to those trying to get work with them.

A typical day at work was fun and enjoyable but sometimes challenging. I learned how to deal with candidates professionally and also about recruiting nurses and what there job involves i also learned new things on the computer systems that i had never seen before. Some of the management were supportive more than others. my branch manager wasn't supportive towards me one bit. My Co-workers were extremely supportive and helpful they were friendly and outgoing people and got me through challenging parts in my job roll. The hardest part of my job was probably knowing every bit of online training that came under different sections in candidates files. The most enjoyable part of the job was definitely meeting and speaking to different candidates who we have recruited and just generally having a friendly and warmth conversation. Also the most enjoyable part was working with some of the best co-workers building not just work relationship but friend relationships too.

what a horrendous mixture of threats to work or shifts cancelled, cancelled shifts as arriving on site.  false promises of many shifts but only getting 2 or 3 a week, huge pool of staff.  not allowing anyone to get the overtime ratwe as not qualified each week with number of hours worked despite the agency being paid Unilever labour rates.  Appalling place to work and I believe huge organisations use these agencies nowadays to hide behind to bully staff into going in at very short notice and manipulating staff, no doubt permanent employees would have rights and being on the books of this set up just means you can be kicked and bullied and demoralised for however long you are happy to tolerate it.  Also, I worked extremely hard and nver got a permanent role, despite being advised hard work was rewarded with contracts.  Come to think of it, I don't recall anyone getting a contract.

Having read, various reviews, I wouldn't if I had the chance again, even consider working for this agency, they tell you what you want to hear, at this moment in time, the work  isn't there, so you are  stood around ok  you are getting paid for it. But the morning shift is in the pipe line of being got rid of, then in the later stages of  January/ February you then get laid off, if its job security you are looking for I wouldn't even consider this Agency ( MERIDIAN)   NEXT themselves, I found the management to be good, I didn't have No problem with them, if you do your job, your ok, but obviously if you just stand around you deserve to get a telling off, but they are more relaxed than hard on you, the Next management, the Meridian lot are a waist of space!! The Team trainers are great, deserve better than they are getting off there employers, oh, and you've to work BANK HOLIDAYS at single time you don't even get a day back, 

Very bad company to work for was trained as a picker in warehouse near Armforth working 8 hour shift Friday to Monday but every time I turned up for work was put on box making duties.  Then took 1 day off sick as I had kidney stone pain which I informed company about.  Was due to start work again this Friday but received text to say not wanted due to poor performance, I would like to see them work when you are doubled up in pain trying to pass a kidney stone and I only took one day off, all other times was turning up before my shift started and booking in accordingly so much for job security.  They just wanted to get rid of me due to my age as I am over 60 and only employ young people who are cheaper as they do not have to pay them so much.
Still have not received link to review my payslips despite numerous request for same don’t suppose will get a P45 from them either

So bad team  at Liverpool because there’s no organisation,  they have work  plan  I think they to go back to school to learn how’s hospitality should work , no real face to face staff feedback,  got too much phone contact  from different  administration staff by Merdian so each you have to save the who is calling you but in the end off the month you found more than 6 people called you for the same things so I think 6 admin people working for one staff 😂 normally it’s should be obesity but I think the company got too much money to hire too much people who are not working for the customers but working for 1 staff  
I think it’s should be one Coch working for minimum 10 staff not other side 
Just advise for the first time people working don’t try to work for them so rude 

I would process timesheets that had been brought into the office and also those that had been faxed to us. I would calculate hours and rates of pay and input onto the data base. I would also chase outstanding timesheets. In addition to this I would deal with telephone enquires concerning job placements and also book people into see the interviewers.

It was a fast paced environment but the people in the company were extremely friendly and helpful. The position was a temporary one for 6 months but I ended up being asked to continue with them for 2 years. 

There were tight deadlines to work to but it was always satisfying when all of the time sheets had been completed on time and correctly.
