Whilst working at Milton Keynes College I acquired new skills and also enhance my existing skills. A typical day at work would involve coming in early in the morning and sorting post. This would entail sorting all incoming mail and arranging it into the appropriate pigeon hole. I was also held responsible for the use of the College's Franking Machine which sorted all outgoing mail. I would then be on Front Desk. My duties included signing in/out guests, directing visitors where to go, logging things in the diary, sending emails and providing a warm welcoming and calm atmosphere to members of the College. I was also held responsible for the College's main switchboard, which would take lots of calls concerning a number of issues. During the end of the College day I would have to count the money taken by reception and was responsible for keeping it safe.
Whilst working on recepiton here I learnt a lot of new skills that I can take with me into a new workplace, for example, operating the franking machines, using all the microsoft packages and also Pro Solution and Pro monitor. I also enhanced skills of my own, like my communication and understanding skills and also my telephone manner. My role as a receptionist at Milton Keynes College came with a lot of responsibilties and I have proven that I work well in a team and also individually.

The teaching sessions are challenging as they last three hours with a fifteen minute break. The Learners are restricted as it's a prison on the movements of the guards and so small things like toilet breaks are difficult. This has taught me  a lot about planning in particular diversifying teaching tasks and activities.   

The hardest part of the job is convincing entry level learners with a negative experience of education that achieving their level 1 and 2 maths and English has value. 

The most rewarding part is watching learners realise that they have learnt something and can apply it to their work. This often results in discussions and a realisation that they are progressing.

My day is Organised, informative planned, I assess, give practical instruction and demonstrations. we provide a food and beverage service to paying customers.

An immense sense of achievement when a learner succeeds, Management are supportive and encouraging.

Most are willing to change and keep updated, new staff are bringing it to the party.

Restricted regime, to give learners the training in a real work place environment. Those working in the environment need to believe in change and rehabilitation.

When a learner decides to make those changes, grasps the chance to gain employment and begin their life as a productive member of society.

Was fun to begin with but with so many of management leaving at the same time and little structure in place to support staff the environment became unsafe with prisoners having the last say and dictating what they would be doing. A complete overhaul of the education system would be needed with staff who have experience with offenders and not just masters graduates with little or no experience of the real world they live in. 
Was great place to help and develop offenders but staff don't have the experience to do as such with no relevant understanding of offenders.

The people are friendly and everything is organised and thought out. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Can be hectic at times until things settle

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Supportive, warm environment. People are willing to help with things you need to know and chip in if needed for a team effort job.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Varied, busy, change of scene throughout the day, different faces, always interesting and not once did I dread going in.

As a new co-caretaker of the college I expected more respect from my colleagues, so was bitterly disappointed to be dismissed after informing management of gross misconduct by a senior caretaker, who had left the site on an open evening & gone to the pub, ..this was a regular habit. ...leaving our security guard in charge, then when there was a fire alarm evacuation the chief caretaker was nowhere to be found and security didn't have the codes to switch off the alarms ..fire brigade were furious.
Management were informed and both myself and security were sacked.

 Assisting and receiving visitors, answering the telephone in a polite manner and dealing with clients face to face. Data entry, filing and storing information manually, recording and accounting for cash and credit. Observing Health and safety in the workplace, working well as part of a team and on my own initiative. Helpful and courteous. If a problem arises I would report it to my inline manager. The most enjoyable part of the job is working alongside others, meeting deadlines and feeling satisfied at the end of the day.

Liked working there at the beginning however we were always short staffed. Staff turnover very high. Paper work was high and you never had enough time to complete it and given it at the last minute.
No officers within education so you felt un safe in the environment. Lots of staff off sick due to work related stress. You were expected to go on wings to recruit even though you were not radio trained or trained in self defence.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Good colleagues. Very professional and supportive. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Lots of paperwork and form filling

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Was very much a blame culture, with poor local manager. Recent departure of same has led to great improvement so far. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working remote in HMP, so day is well definwd and fairly predictable. Requires concentration, self discipline and definite sense of humour!

Most difficult thing was dealing with constant management changes and old school staff that wouldn't listen or accept change.
Learnt how to use assessment systems and enjoyed interacting with the clients/students.
