A typical day at work consists of logging into your accounts and updating yourself on the days' emails and any new guidelines, asking the day's duty team leader a question if you are unclear. You are assigned calls and are expected to scan each individual case with haste, make the call, and leave a note of the result. Occasionally flagging the citizen for follow-up calls or making a referral or consult was required (known in the workplace vernacular as a 'flag'). Breaks are allowed but only at certain points of the day. A daily report log must be composed by yourself throughout the day and submitted at the end of each shift. You are required to attend a team meeting every fortnight and progress meetings with your assigned team leader on a semi-regular basis.

The hardest part of the job was probably the fact that the guidelines change very frequently and it could be difficult to interpret all facets of the new information/updates.  For people who are more analytically-minded, it may be very tough as the speed of work (i.e. the amount of calls you manage to complete in a given day) is very focused on and very highly valued. In my subjective personal opinion/personal experience, the workplace culture could be tough to navigate at times due to the fact  solely-culture-orientated expectations were not usually openly discussed.  Employees were actively discouraged by management from asking each other work-related questions. It is unknown if this situation has changed in the past 2 months. 

Room for joviality does exist within the culture and a couple of the management staff in particular really made the working day that bit lighter and merry on the days they are the assigned duty Team Leader.

The most enjoyable parts of the jobs were the odd occasion when a citizen would remark that you've done a good job or thanked you for the work that you do for the community. The most enjoyable parts of training were interacting with fellow employees, (including friendly and helpful trainers).

my work day would start with a handover from staff about any issues that had taken place in my absence, I would then deal with any urgent issues and pass this information over to the staff team that would be working that morning/afternoon.
I would open and deal with the most urgent emails that had come threw, I would walk around the building to check on everybody under our care to ensure they were alright and nothing had been missed.
Medication would start from 8am until approx. 10.30 when individuals would be having there breakfast, between doing this I would also be answering the phone, dealing District Nurses and calling G.Ps if needed.
I would then check risk assessments to ensure that they were up to date as they can change on a daily basis if anybody had a fall updating spreadsheets, organising supervisions and team meetings with the staff group.
The home was a very busy home and more often than not I would be the only manager on duty, I would have to chase up medication, arrange transport for hospital appointment in between individuals who access's the service wanting to speak to me.
I would update service plans and the documentation that was in place to ensure it was still relevant and current 
The workplace culture had slowly started to change in a good way as the other managers and staff group came to realise that there place of work was individuals homes.
As the majority of the time I worked without any other managers being on shift it was juggling several issues at once.
The best part of the role I undertook was when the staff team and individuals would say thank you

NCC council is not a good place to work, anyone saying it is is clearly a senior manager, Director or Temp.

Jobs are scarce, cuts being made and jobs will be going. Not at the top though, never the top! They would rather cut 2 jobs at 20 thousand a year than reduce the salary of the directors or even perhaps lose one of them.

Also if you have a disability and struggle to do your job, they may go through motions of looking supporting, like sending you to Oc Health but in the end they use it all against you and find a way to have you out... Don't bother with them if you have a choice.

Also the council is full of extra middle management that serve no purpose what so ever, they cut vital roles and appointment stupid positions and middle managers that aren't needed getting paid a lot of money.

As a final note... When you start there, you go to an induction where the directors tell you how nice and approachable they are. I got ignored by them in the corridors multiple times when I said hello. They arrogant, stuck up and self centred so don't even bother!

The experience you have working for NCC will depend very much on what role/department you work for and the team leaders you have.
There are good managers and also those that have no clue and you wonder how they lasted in the job (usually because favouritism and they are long time permanent employees).

Support for studies/training available but limited to only what is required to be able to do your role, if you are already over-qualified for current role then you get no support to train or progress unless already in a Management role or you have been selected via favouritism to progress.

Cons:
Staff car & tech schemes are only accessible to permanent staff or 3+ years contracted, but majority are offered Annual Contract renewal.
Feeling like a valued member depends on your Team Leader/department.
No/Rare career progression unless in right team.
Pay freeze/Lower than inflation increases.
Top Management - currently all new hires so culture can change for better or worse over next few years.

What is the best part of working at the company?
I have worked here for nearly 10 years and have had an amazing time. Staff are friendly, management are lovely. I am only leaving because I want to pursue a dream I have had for a lifetime but I would highly recommend working for NCC

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I work for homelessness in one of the most deprived boroughs in Wales - which comes with pressures. Supply and demand of housing makes it extremely stressful but because of the comradery and support of colleagues throughout the whole dept we get through.  

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Friendly, supportive, fast paced.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I work for homelessness and every day is different. Some harrowing things to deal with at times but that is why I chose to work there - so I could help. Management will be there to support you.

Being stuck in endless, unproductive Teams meetings and bombarded with messages can make it hard to actually get work done.
Senior managers prioritizing personal favouritism over merit,  led to inefficiencies, disengagement, and ultimately a decline in service quality. Lack of interest from senior managers in resident services was particularly concerning, since the council's main responsibility is to serve the community.
Poor management created a toxic work environment, lower morale, and affected the quality of services provided to residents.
A draining workplace culture with serious leadership issues, favouritism and lack of employee support made for a toxic environment.
Hardest part of the job was navigating poor leadership, managing stress and finding motivation in a disengaged environment
the most enjoyable part of the job was going home each day 



A typical day at work required us to have a morning briefing to ensure everyone knew what was going on throughout the day so everyone's knowledge was updated. You could also bring up any ideas an queries during this time which you may have. We would then set out the equipment and stations which the children could use such as Arts and Crafts. We would then allow children to come in and play with equipment. If it was sunny outside then we would allow children to go outside with sporting equipment whilst being supervised by two members of staff.

works out much better for me to look after dad as several care companies that we employed previously just have too many service users to be able to always be on time. I am very sad and annoyed that the pay is so very poor for all carers considering the training we have and the things we have to deal with on a daily basis. if the pay was better and you were not employed on a zero hours contract I would go back to caring straight away.

Getting things sorted out even after you have mentioned it to management over multiple times.

Starts of good but soon as you start to settle on your eyes start to open to the problems and concerns that are around.

Its okay again at the start but soon starts to go down hill the longer you stay here

Working for Newport City Council's Youth Offending Sefvice,  I regularly turned up to find sessions had been cancelled and I had not been informed, therefore making my trip pointless. Information that was needed was incredibly difficult to come by and there was very little support available. Equipment and facilities were dated and in poor condition and management didn't appear to care.
