Postgraduate and support teams are lovely and try their best to support staff members, but there is a limit to what support and adjustments can be offered to staff with physical health conditions and disabilities. My current rotation is very inflexible, so I am working a rota which is making my symptoms worse and despite raising this before I started, nothing has been done to make the rota safe or workable. Shift lengths are often very unclear and staff are discouraged from reporting when they have to work late, which is generally most days. You do not always get your protected rest times between shifts - this is especially exhausting when you are working back to back 13 and 12.5 hour shifts. 

The nurses are absolutely wonderful and supportive, but it can be very hard for both resident doctors and nurses to escalate concerns to the correct specialists - this is really stressful for everyone working on the ward. Often escalating concerns is met with frustration from the members of staff you must escalate to, as they are also overwhelmed and have too much work to handle. Staff members I have never interacted with before have shouted at me in front of my ward because they did not understand my rota times. 

Overall, lots of lovely and supportive people but there’s a limit to what support can actually be given. If you are able to work less than full time this is an option but your schedule will still include the incredibly long, exhausting shifts on a rota which does not give enough rest time between shifts, and occupational health do not appear to be able to offer support with this either. This is also far less economically viable. I was warned before beginning this job that my rotation has a toxic workplace culture and I would agree with this. The nurses are incredibly kind, supportive, and patient, despite the fact that they also bear the brunt of the unpleasant work culture alongside new doctors. I genuinely don’t know how they do it, and I am so grateful to them for standing up for me when other staff have been unpleasant and tried to pressure me to continually work after my shift has ended and to do jobs that are above my grade. I don’t think it’s a good working environment for new doctors or for nurses, and I can understand why there is often frustration, discontent, and disharmony between team members. I have heard other hospitals are not like this - I will probably not get to find out as this job has taken such a toll on my mental health that I am looking to resign asap. 

I have worked at Nottingham QMC for nearly 1 year after previously working at the Derby Royal Hospital. In my opinion which comes based on my experience of working within the logistics/facilities departments at both hospitals I have to rate Nottingham as very good compared to my experience in Derby. At QMC I was working under an NHS contract as opposed to Derby, where it appears they do not value the facilities or patient movement teams enough to employ them under the NHS band 2 contract anymore. In my opinion this contract is the difference between these types of jobs being jobs for life for some people or just another transitional job. Throughout my time here I feel like I have been lucky with regards to the departments I have worked in and from a personal perspective I would recommend it as a good place to work compared to when I was doing the same job in Derby.

The Trust is very big, it is a major trauma centre for East Midlands, which makes it a very busy and stressful environment to work in. Every ward and department is short staffed, especially emergency departments. Having said this, there is a lot of support available to staff, including good employment benefits and psychological and wellbeing help. I would recommend this trust. 

The worst place imaginable! I wish I left sooner. Massive clique issues, the nurses are entitled bullies who will abuse all support staff, no career progression, 12 hour shifts which become 13/14/15 hour shifts, poor pay, doctors do not care about patients, not allowed any sick leave (even if you’re admitted into the same hospital as a patient). Avoid this place! Even as a patient, try go to a different hospital because the care you will get is so poor! 

Lots of support offered to staff, great teams with family feel to it, issues with staffing meant increased stress at times but this is in line with all other nhs trusts. Management could listen more and spend times in the wards during busier days to really get a realistic view not just on the known better days. This would help them set realistic goals and offer better support and intervention. 

Current state of the NHS is shambles. It’s not great place to work especially due to staff shortage. There’s no work life balance. Very difficult to finish on Time and get sufficient breaks. Constantly challenging situations.

Hospital is extremely busy. This naturally creates a lot of stress and chaos. It seems most wards feels understaffed most of the time, which is what the employers really need to address. However I do still enjoy working there as everyone is nice, helpful, and collaborative. Everything is a team effort and most people are always willing to help with any issue. 

I think one needed to be rather fit physically and psychologically. Get prepared to do pretty big portion of personal care with your carer such as turning, pad round, of course on top of the RN tasks. Good for those who really love to care the elderly.

The lack of care and empathy to patients was shocking. I worked on a ward and occasionally we’d see the same faces, they were often ridiculed as being a time wasters and engaging with patients was something I was told off for. I would never go back. 

My area is very short staffed with most of us new to the speciality. There is no acknowledgement of the heavy workload and they keep adding more. Poorly managed, but things will hopefully be improving after a shake-up.
