I have worked at Sally for 7 years as a store manager.
 Almost every year I have been promoted to a larger turnover store. Your career can really be what you make it. I've definately been encouraged and developed to drive me to achieve my potential.

Starting as a non professional in the industry was very daunting however I've found the hair and beauty training academy amazing, boosting not only my product knowledge but confidence, I felt I'd really achieved something. This job is not for slackers you are expected to work hard and improve yourself. They also offer free training courses for anyone who has passed probation and academy so there is opportunity to continue to improve knowledge on how to use the professional products. There are roadshows to attend every 2 months with new product launches and training from the suppliers, you also get a tonne of free products! 

There are targets to hit just like any management role but regular reviews and feedback on your performance helps, with the freedom to create your own business plan. Bonus' can be earned for achieving results along with endless incentives for the whole team to work towards.
 The days are longer than most shop work 8.30 until 
6.15 and everyone is expected to be able to open and close the store. This is not the type of job where staff stand behind the till and wait for customers, interaction and one to one sales is expected.
 The focus is on keeping the customer in centre whilst managing lots of other tasks, so it's always busy and never boring. 
 
Over the last few years there has been changes in senior management and the culture of the company has massively changed, it's alot more fun and lively. Feedback is constantly asked for and its felt that the opinion of store staff is important, valued and used to make improvements to the business.
If you want a career in a fast passed industry with a company that is constantly improving then you will enjoy Sallys, but you have to be willing to put the work in, to reap the rewards. Personally I think its worth it and I enjoy every minute.

After a 2 year nightmare here's a small insite!

- Forced to go in on your days off
- bombarded with calls and text on days off
- left to work alone the majority of the time in a large store (industrial estate) 
- no lunch brake or even be able to use the loo because your lone working 
- rotas changed without notice and last minute 
- worked to the bone from the second you arrive until you finish 
- expected to work in other stores without much notice
- holiday to be excepted then declined 
- staff constantly leave/don't turn up, in 2 years I saw over 15 people come and go in a team of 5! 
- work over 12 hours because of being short staffed 
- work over 55+ hours a week at times because of no staff! Also days and days on end without a day off
- waste 45 minutes of your own time for free everyday opening and closing the store ( your expected to get in at 8.15 and leave around 6.30 when you actually get paid from 8.30-6)
- the only staff the company manage to employ are people without much common sense or motivation 
( lazy, 2 faced) people end up with Sallys because they can't get /find jobs elsewhere
- most store managers are horrible very lazy, young, unprofessional and with very little experience (they literally have no idea how to manage staff) infact your treated badly
- even on a 8 hour contract your expected to be fully flexible! Able to open and close the store too
- the training you receive is horrendous very little! And your penalised if you get things wrong
- your expected to deal with all stock counting and mange the store even as sales assistant 
- what your expected to do as a sales assistant is infact a assistant manager position 
- expected to pester customers and not let them look around ( to the point the customer is sick of you they walk out) 
- they rarely pay you overtime either 
- higher management are horrible too
- policy's and procedures always changing 

Working for this company literally took over my life and completely ruined it! It has made me extremely depressed and I wouldn't recommend it to ANYONE!!

I would not recommend working for this company. 
My tims at Salon Services was not the most pleasant, the job offers little to no benefits while lone working is constantly expected. The company does not offer s stable work pattern.
The training provided is underwhelming, there is little support from management. Interdepartmental communication is dysfunctional with many employees not being able to perform the job they have been assigned to do. Higher management often shows Incompetence while exercising their functions.
Employees are constantly underappreciated. The level of demand is too high for the pay rate. Internal incentives offer little motivation. A part-time sales assistant would receive a £40.00 bonus if and only if monthly sales targets are met for the whole shop. This means that even though the employee brought a profit of thousands to the company they would only receive a gratification of £40.00 with a full-time sales assistant would receive a bonus of £80.00, which is not proportional to the demands of daily workflow.
Day-to-day quotas are often unachievable and unrealistic. No help or clear guidance is offered on how to attain such targets.
Sales assistants are expected to retain an absurd amount of information about every product line sold in their store.
The company offers little to no protection to their employees. 
During the course of my employment I noticed that often managers across many stores would share confidential information regarding their employees among themselves, staff members and even customers that frequent their shops. 
Unpaid overtime may be expected, especially after closing. I've noticed coworkers (myself included) having to stay past their working hours to manage the tills and all cashing up procedures while not being paid for it. The same principle is applied to opening procedures.
This is a job that offers very little in terms of career progression. I would honestly not recommend it.

Okay, so.. my store manager (who has now left) and the staff I worked with daily were lovely people and great to work along side with I had no issues whatsoever with them they made my time there welcoming and fun. 

The hours were fine, pay fine but the responsibilities were ridiculous for a store assistant. You were basically expected to do a managers role a lot of the time. Opening and closing up, cashing up that took AGES because it’s so complicated it actually had me in tears one weekend when I was left alone! Lone working all weekend is another con you couldn’t just do one day, it had to be both days.  Salon visits (where you didn’t even get offered petrol money for using your own car!) I was made to do salon visits explaining where I was from, and what we had to offer ON MY SECOND DAY... ALONE!!! Not fair at all because I didn’t have a clue. 
There’s this book every week called “in touch weekly” for the staff which is full of info you’re expected to somehow remember (deals, products, targets all sorts) 
The job is target/sales based for sure which wasn’t mentioned to me in the interview and it’s unfair because you’re seriously pushed and if you don’t have it in you (like I didn’t because I find asking people if they’re interested in something and pushing it on them extremely awkward) you will feel really pressurised. 

The head manager his name I will not say but I can’t say I liked him, if I could swear on here the word would rhyme with anchor. He was horrible to my store manager. 

He purs too much pressure on staff, rings up on the spot asking daft questions when you’ve just started that you wouldn’t be able to answer. Pushes the targets for sales so hard you want to cry. Not my kind of manager at all. He needs to look at other things instead of pressuring the people he has working in his stores. 

Knock the lone working on the head as it’s unsafe - the amount of strange men I had coming in that shop when I was alone being creepy was worrying!

I would not recommend working for this company.

working at sallys was an amazing job, flexible, friendly and a very happy atmosphere.

greeting new and current customers everyday, giving the best service i could
helping customer with queries about stock, training courses, products or any other general information.

setting up the training room with refreshments and making sure its clean and tidy and presentable for our visitors
signing in visitors when on a training course in the store,

taking orders big and small amount over the phone and taking payments over the phone

general polite calls to all our customer to make them aware of the VAT free day we have once a month.

great management always there when you need help even if its with the same thing over and over again as long as your doing it right

i learned most of the admin side of the job which includes, 
-cashing up daily
-making sure there is enough till float
-banking
- taking orders over the phone
-chasing up delivery for customers
- booking training courses
- calling head office for general queries 
-placing large amount of orders and filling in spread sheets on Microsoft office 
- letting customers know there orders have arrived in store

working under pressure was probably the most enjoyable part of the job, due to making sure everything is spot on and on point
helping one another and having great and understanding customers which help you keep your spirit and keep you positive when they tell you "your doing a great job"

Nothing ever goes right, if you work(ed) for the company you know exactly what that means. Long days 8.15-5.45 every day with little flexibility, not ideal if you have children or other commitments. Bonus scheme made impossible to reach. Poor staff discount and the best deals you can’t double up on. You have to buy all the products to try them and be able to sell them, samples are a rarity and once in a blue moon the brand will give you a product range to share between the store. Lone working isn’t limited to weekends, some days you’ll have to lone work 8.15 until 5.45 with no proper break. You have to use your own car to do the stores banking with minimal expenses per mile paid. Sales assistants are usually key holders with extra responsibility but no extra pay. Salaries are decided on how friendly you can become with the higher management, pay rises are so low that the NMW for sales assistants goes up more than management in a year making the pay gap extremely slim. New management coming into the company get paid more than ones who have been loyal for years. People who have been in the company years leaving because of big changes or losing their jobs due to the company slimming down on staff. 
The team you work with in store and as a district is what makes the job enjoyable. Good amount of holiday given. 
Overall, an incredible amount of tasks, targets and responsibility is expected for poor minimum wage and unacceptable, unfair, unjustified salaries. Perfect for people who have no other commitments outside of work. 

I was given little notice that my contract was not going to be renewed, in addition to this, they were annoyed when my doctor wrote me off of work due to my mental health issues, my previous experience in work  was a supportive environment who at least tried to understand and accept that I may have to take one or two weeks of now and again but with Sallys there was none of that.

Also I was pretty much left on my own, My desk was completely separated from others within the same department and when I brought it up I was told to just get on with it.

I felt very segregated and unwanted while I was working here and to be completely honest I'm glad I'm out of there!

One more thing that I noticed while working here was that the staff did not have the best attitude towards LGBTQ+ individuals (like myself), when asked about my partner my colleagues seemed, in absence of a better word, disgusted when I gave them my answer.

Also, when on my 30 minuet lunch break,I was timed to the second, if I was late back I would be in trouble, so I basically only got a 25 minute break to make sure that others wouldn't complain. (Note: My colleagues would end up taking 45 minute - 1 hour breaks and not be penalised for it!)

Honestly this was one of the worst working experiences in my life so far, I'm just hoping that the next job I get is better that this place.

Would definitely not recommend working here!

Well where to begin....

A typical day at work; your worst nightmare to be honest with you. You are put under so much pressure to do jobs that atleast 2/3 people should be doing. Underpaid for the amount you have to do. I do not know how previous/current employees have lasted so long. You get treated like your 2 years old, they employ you telling you about all the benefits and how amazing the company is. Well there really is no benefits!!! A few free samples of things that never sold well, thats about it. Company itself does well but I do not understand how, it is so poorly run within Head Office, the instore workers do amazing to put up with everything. When I worked here it was constant bullying, manipulation and your made to feel like your worthless. Go on holiday and NONE of your work will be covered NONE! Then you get the blame for being behind. I met some lovely people who worked there but funny that a few months later and they all have new jobs, no joke like 15 people from my department have now left or looking for new work! No wonder why there is so many vacancies. I learned nothing, management was shocking, no support, no help and no progession possible unless you kiss butt!!

If anyone is offered a job here, I highly recommend you refuse. Especially at head office.

The worst place I have ever worked in! Everything people have said about this place is true! You will have no life, not the best company to work for if you have children, they do not like you having time off sick, they have you running round like dogs bodies, why they employ managers I do not know, because you do all the work anyway, my first boss there was fantastic and was sad to see her leave, her replacement was an absolute joke the most unprofessional person I have ever met, turned staff against one another constantly talking about staff to other staff members, had one rule for one and one for another, if you had done something wrong or been off sick the day before you would be ignored! She kept staff prizes and actually handed some vouchers won by the whole shop team to a staff member who had just had a baby, nice gesture but we wasn't informed of that, or that as a team we had even won (was for monthly kpi's).  She would take stock and hide it in the office and wait for it to go on offer or vat free day and purchase the lot! I could go on and on but just talking about it is making me relive it.....best thing I ever did was leave that place, I would strongly advise against working here if you wish to keep your hair and your sanity!
