I initially had a very positive experience working here. The role was fast-paced and engaging, and opening a new store was a valuable learning opportunity. I enjoyed working on the shop floor and gaining hands-on experience in a busy retail environment.

However, after a change in management, the work environment became increasingly challenging. Day-to-day tasks such as leaving the floor or completing replenishment were often criticised depending on timing, which created confusion and pressure rather than clarity. Targets and conversion rates were a strong focus, and when these weren’t met, it often felt discouraging rather than motivating.

The management style in this particular store felt very results-driven, with limited emphasis on encouragement or staff development. Formal disciplinaries were frequently referenced, which contributed to a stressful atmosphere instead of fostering growth and confidence within the team. Progression opportunities for internal employees were discussed, but in practice felt limited, with high workloads and burnout occurring before advancement was realistically considered.

That said, there were genuine positives. Brand representatives provided excellent training, gratis opportunities were generous, and there were memorable experiences such as educational trips to London. The team on the ground was passionate about beauty, and the brand itself has strong values and potential.

Overall, while I appreciated many aspects of working for Sephora, the management approach and store operations I experienced did not feel sustainable long-term. Sephora promotes itself as an inclusive and supportive space for beauty lovers, and I hope future store environments align more closely with those values for both staff and customers.

The positives are great product allocation, good brand training and the salary is good, however all this couldn’t make up for working in such a toxic, stressful environment.

Managers are never present when you need them, it’s clear they view themselves as above the other workers, they rely on beauty advisors to snitch on eachother and actively encourage this rather than spend anytime on the shop floor.

Favouritism is a huge issue in the store I worked in, double standards were common and unless you were considered a managers favourite, you’re gonna have a hard time. They seemed to target someone seemingly out of nowhere and this would change regularly - if you’re the current target, your work life is gonna be even worse for a bit. 

The working conditions over the summer were abysmal, working in 28 degrees Celsius on the shop floor with no air con and no understanding even being told by management “it’s not that bad” when they’re in the back sitting in front of a fan. 

Ive never worked in such a strange, toxic environment, workers would be crying due to the stress placed on them, i saw this at least once or twice a week. 

Most of the beauty advisors are amazing, however it can be really sad - they hire people who are passionate and excited and slowly drain this out of them. 

The store I worked at as well as most others was so unpleasant. First and foremost the kids working at Sephora feel the job puts you on a gold pedestal above others. If you want a mix of ghetto, wannabe, air headed smug but still have no sense of anything environment this is the place.
 Also all customers wanted to know where i got my colognes, Aqua Di Parmas.. i woud tell them no problem it is located at Barneys  ake sure you get one.
If you do not mind selling the most basic, already had that 8 years ago 3 times kind of scents, maybe here is for you, but Barneys and other top competitors have the absolute best selection of fragrances hands down.. i would never push a sale rather than be honest and tell what is best.

The discount is the only thing

There’s no room to progress and the management is terrible.


What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
If you are of a darker complexion you cannot buy in store it’s online however it creates a divide on who can actually come to the store 

For a brand that screams inclusivity they display and possess none

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Depressed, overworked and painful due to breaks in a 9 hour shift only one break and if you have health conditions you are expected to lessen your only break meaning if you sit for 10 mins that’s deductible from your break

Working at Sephora turned out to be one of my least enjoyable jobs. The atmosphere was made difficult by managers who seemed more focused on flexing authority than actually helping their teams succeed. Instead of encouraging growth, they often spoke to employees in a dismissive way, particularly targeting younger staff, and what they called “leadership” often felt more like intimidation or belittling.

I was very excited to join. When I got offered the job it was all exciting until a week into the job I fully regretted this. Management do not care about your saftey at all! Very rude an non approachable. Was told that I’d be working until 11pm just like everyone else but then goes and mention it’s not written in the contract!!! Long hours 9 hr shifts with 1 hr break is horrible! 

Working for this company I thought would be a good idea to widen my skills set, working in another area that was not the West End too. It was very interesting as you had a number of different companies under one roof offering impartial advice, which customers on the whole prefer.

Sephora is a brilliant company to work for, salary is good, training is good however this does come with its challenges. For example long shifts and high targets also management can be a big issue overtime but it’s the colleagues you work with who make it a great environment! 

Wonderful training, a lot of free product, long shift with 3 or 2 late night and early morning the next day. Not very great with showing appreciation toward staff effort, worst management i ever seen: unexperienced, racist-no inclusiveness, unfair, and favoritism. Even HR is also being unfair too.

Hours are very long and never get two days off together can work 6 days in a row often
High targets so you will never get commission 
Management need improvement but the staff are lovely so it makes the days better
