 your job is to go to social housing and service/fix boilers.If they allocate a work patch it’s easier but if you’re a floater, they’ll send you to Dover,Eastbourne,West sussex,Tunbridge wells and you’ll be driving more than doing real work.Management will track you what time you leave home or what time you arrive home at the end of the shift.If you leave work patch early for home or you leave home for work patch late management will decine you. They expect you to be at your first job by 08:00am(some jobs take 1hour or 2hours on M25 morning rush hour traffic).If you finish at 17:00 in Eastbourne you have have to wait 30minutes there before you leave for your home even if the journey takes 2hours. Imagine you arrive home everyday at 19:30. Favouritism is another problem, S&B has its own gang of favourite engineers who will get almost all of breakdowns and easy work on patch while they give you jobs 2hours away.It will take 10s of calls to office so that they can arrange a repair for your company van,very frustrating. 

This company is good for newly qualified improvers that want a bit of hands on experience, but be prepared for a lot of work load and pressure from supervisor and management. If you don’t start performing to their standards after your 3 month probation which involves meeting your “8 hours” mark, which means you have to complete X amount of jobs to meet the criteria. Sounds achievable right? Only that management don’t care if sometimes you get stuck on other jobs or tenants are not in. Even if you work your butt off there’s hardly any recognition or praise from management. It’s a very toxic environment where only a small handful of people get the perks and special privileges (ex, easy jobs, high pay jobs). They have a poor staff retention and for a good reason!

My experience was very poor, rude office staff who always had their own agendas. Managers who didn’t even have a clue with how to do their jobs correctly. Inadequate, unsafe workmanship and selfish engineers. Quantity over quality where there should be a balance. How many more contracts are you gonna lose before you realise how to keep them. Improve the quality of the service to keep costs down, pay the engineers accordingly and stop over loading them.

Not great no support or help from higher ups

Boiler installations for council propertys

workplace culture is not healthy, the colleagues there are very disrespectful & the level of support you get is very minimal.
Management was not able to provide clear structure on how the staff operate in regards to daily routines.
the most enjoyable part of the jobs is the finishing at 5pm.

As they say lay peanuts get monkeys, poor pay overload with work.  Managers and office staff incompetent, lots of favouritism need to be a comedian to get in with office staff to get decent work.  Directors incompetent and favouritism again have to be friends or family to make it up the ladder.  Leave well alone

Smith&Byford is a great company to work for with excellent management and staff. Training is thorough and regular to keep staff up to date and constantly improving. Relaxed working environment that makes coming into work far more enjoyable. Good shift patterns and good salary/staff benefits.

Money is good but that's about all.

terrible company, dont look after staff, if your an engineer with a van, your in trouble if you even chip the paint!. Really have no interest in keeping staff and will get rid of you at a moments notice

Everyone gets along really well, the job itself is very stressful but that is at no fault of the company. Working for social housing tenants so can be hard when you want to help but aren’t always able to.
