Snowdome

My time at SnowDome was an important starting point in my career as a snowsports instructor, and I gained valuable experience that helped develop my skills and knowledge within the industry. Many of the instructors and frontline staff were hardworking, passionate, and committed to delivering a positive experience for guests. They are the people who keep the operation running day after day.

Unfortunately, my experience with senior management was significantly less positive. I felt there was a culture in which staff who raised concerns, challenged decisions, or proposed improvements were often met with hostility rather than constructive discussion. In my experience, this created an environment where some employees felt discouraged from speaking openly, and I witnessed behaviour from senior leadership that I perceived as intimidating, dismissive, and, at times, bordering on bullying.

I was also concerned by what I considered to be poor decision-making regarding operational and instructional practices. As my industry knowledge grew, there were occasions where I felt that safety standards and best practices commonly expected within the snowsports industry were not always given the priority they deserved. Raising concerns or suggesting alternative approaches did not always appear to be welcomed, which I found disappointing given the importance of safety in snowsports instruction.

While there were many excellent colleagues, workplace culture could be inconsistent, and support from management was not always present when needed. Combined with pay levels that I felt did not adequately reflect the responsibilities and qualifications required for the role, this made it difficult to view the organisation as a long-term employer.

Overall, SnowDome gave me a valuable introduction to the snowsports industry, but concerns around leadership culture, staff treatment, and my perception of safety management ultimately outweighed the positives of the role.

Worked on the 2017 Santa’s Winter Wonderland, just to earn some money in the build up to Christmas whilst studying! 

Starting with the good:

Absolutely the best job ever from a Social aspect, I’ve kept in touch with people I made friends with when I worked there, It was great for meeting new people 

An invite to the March annual ‘Lock in party’ with 4 free drinks tokens as a thank you for working there was a nice touch, as was a lunch organised by my managers on our final shift 

My 3 line managers were superb, always looked out for their customers 

Free entry to activities

Easy to balance with studies 

However the bad:

Minimum wage, for the work we did I personally felt we deserved a little more than minimum wage 

The management of the whole business, not my line managers (as previously stated they were faultless) I thought were a little bit unapproachable and condescending who looked down on you a bit 

No real structure in terms of lunch hours

Had to pay full price for staff food in the aspen restaurant (£4 for a small portion of skinny fries) 

All in all, I’d recommend this job to anyone looking to earn an honest wage who is under 18 or studying at college and sixth form

There are like 6 million managers all standing around telling you that you aren't doing anything when they haven't done anything productive since the 90s. Hours are always low, yet there aren't enough people to complete tasks. The pay is not good enough to excuse the lack of hours. The pay also isn't good enough to excuse the extreme amount of work dumped on you within extremely short time periods. The team across any department is amazing, though; wonderful people you'll be working alongside.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Been happy working there. Good app to manage shifts and it’s flexible. People nice.  Biggest disadvantage is salary and at 17 £4.60 is too low when you work hard

Not knowing if you will get a shift that week

It’s nice and met lots of nice people 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Working in snow or climbing helping people

My time at snow dome was short but i did learn alot how to interact with customers in multiple situations such as explaing where they should go to helping them to get medical aid. Also as this was my first job i had my first proper experience working with other team members. Managment was ok but from time to time they would make the shift unberable. The most enjoyable part of the job was the staff members i was working with helped me out alot if i had any problems.

I would describe The Snowdome is a valuable place of employment for both teenagers looking for a part time job (due to its impressive flexibility), or anybody interested in winter sports who would be able to take advantage of the incredibly valuable staff perks.

That being said, there are some obvious operational deficiencies within the company, and  it would benefit from some work, and areas of the building are definitely treated preferentially.

A typical day would be a shift, short or long with one other lifeguard, where we kept the pool safe and helped maintain the standard of the pool. I learned a lot of customer service as the members of public in the swimming pool were quite varied with age etc. IT was run very well by the management. Co-workers were friendly and easy to get along with. The hardest part of the job was the long shifts. The most enjoyable was the people I met there.

Everyday could be very different, it was a lot of fun and you always met new people! You always did a variety of different things whether it was helping with different snow sport activities or setting up ski and snowboards for customers so that they’re safe for use! 
There was sometimes opportunities to move and experience different departments if you wanted a change too 

The Snowdome is a good place to work if you want to build up your confidence and communication skills. They pay a fair salary, give you decent hours and you get a lot of bonuses with the job, like a 50% discount off of their great gym, and you get to go onto any session for free as long as you discuss it with a supervisor/manager beforehand.

Working as part of a team, where we rest in our own breaks if your not on a break then theres no need to stop work or slow down for any reason, its a tight and tough working area but everyones key is to get the job done. The hardest part of this job would be that the hours can take it out of you but the most enjoyable part is working with people you like to call a family.
