work in busy admission ward which is the single point of entry for all patients in the unit. in a day admission assessment can vary from 0-7 depending on level of acuity of the ward and patients. it can get busy and while trying to handle the admission there are ward activities to be carried out such as patients meals, medication, daily community meetings, ward rounds, answering calls, attending to patients needs and providing high quality care for patients. Also attending to visitors meeting with carers and also liaising with other professions and wards ensuring that patient care and needs are been met. In the mix of this as a charge nurse also might meet up with junior staff offering supervision and training. Doing daily audits on the ward and deputising the ward manager.

What I learnt: is an unpredictable ward and often things do not go according to plan instead of getting stressed or angry and channel all my energy in other things and have learnt to identify when i need to take time out and also manage my stress well.
 
Management: is not an individual single sole person role it involves team work constant effective communication, following protocols having standard, its evidence based, audits, monitoring and measuring, people, services and organisation and how you can make develop better service for patients and staff.

my co-workers that we are all different and have different skills and development needs and we work different with each other based either on our preference or interests on that person. I embrace individuality and diversity and equality.

The hardest part of my job is when some is acutely unwell, lack insight and not willing to concord with their treatment its hard as you want them to get better but at the same time they need to learn more about their mental health. So often you left with a dilemma do you advocate for further assessment or you will wait and give them time. And working with families who are new to the services.

the most enjoyable part is getting a thank you gesture, a card, seeing people better and going home knowing that i am coming back to see different people.

After 20 years plus of service i resigned from my post on sickness following frequent and severe assaults. These incidents were compounded by a lack of suitable trained staff on shift and e.g. staff maintaining composure during incidents.Management support was to ask if i wanted counselling and that i should seek police involvement  My GP asked if anyone had been in contact with me to enquire about my well being. I replied they had not and in fact never did.I was required to write in twice in order to obtain a response to my resignation. A termination letter was sent to me with a post it note slapped on simply saying Hi name do you want a leaving do on this date ? As to how i was meant to engage with a post it note i do not know. Despite several requests no references were provided for me. Breaks were difficult to take and were disturbed by patient demands, telephone calls, emergency bleeps and alarms. I was finally paid for working shifts after a five month wait with numerous emails and phone calls. Near to leaving i was given a passed on message that i would not in future have any input into my off duty with a new off duty not reflecting any of the requests i had asked for.This was not helpful as i took a relative to frequent hospital appointments and that of assisting in a community group As i was sick i rang an HR individual asking for an exit interview form however they were unclear as to what this was and was sure i could obtain this from the intranet.!!. Had i felt listened to, valued and looked after i would have continued in service.

The pharmacy department is not the nicest place to work as the management appear to be unfair in the way that they treat lower level staff.

This is the last job I have had (until February 2013) and I worked in the stores department as well as the dispensary.
I learned a lot about the drugs given to patients, as well as the dangers of many drugs. I also dispensed drugs for patients.

I learned a lot about handling and processing the medical and other stock, including rotations and strict monitoring of expiry dates. Contacting suppliers for orders or for replacements of incorrect or broken stock, etc.

I enjoyed helping patients and engaging them in communication (which was an activity practised at this NHS Trust), which was very good for many of them and made them feel welcome instead of rejected, which seems to be the way people generally made them feel outside the hospital.

Unfortunately, there is not a feeling of team working as staff seem to have a them-and-us attitude and the management did not appear to be interested in eliminating gossip (which was also very destructive).
The management also seem to lack the ability to motivate and get the best out of their staff and many have left as they felt oppressed in that environment.

I think that the most valuable thing I have learned from having worked there is how NOT to manage staff if I should find myself in that position in the future.

As a volunteer, my duty is to assist the management to support social activities to patients from Black and Minority Ethnic  (BME) service users in Peckham South London.The activities intended to enhance the quality of service users' lives. I participate  in activities, promoting events and workshops Interaction of social activities  with service users such as playing table tennis, conversing, dominoes, playing cards, theatre trips and  organise wakings and serving them with refreshments, drinks and hot meals reduce their  social isolation and loneliness experienced by BME. Workplace culture reflects African Caribbean social activities mentioned above and West Indies hot meal cuisines.
The hardest part of the job is listening about  their moving real stories and  the effects of their medical condition while the most enjoyable part is when they are enjoying their home made food, listening reggae music and playing dominoes games. I really enjoy the moment and feel I have contributed to their well-being.

There are things that we can improve but overall it is a good place to work in terms of personal development, equal opportunity and flexibility.

A typical day at work would involve relevant daily administration duties.  Learning is compulsory and training is offered as part of  a leaning process which can be accessed easily.  A lot of the training is mandatory in specific areas which must be completed in a timely process.  Management support is always available although working off your own initiative is essential.  My co-workers and myself support each other daily.  The hardest part of the job is resolving or getting service user satisfaction when dealing with a difficult query over the phone or face to face.The most enjoyable part of the job is receiving positive feedback whether from management and/or service users.

I have worked at Lewisham NHS for over eight years both in Lewisham Hospital and also Lewisham Community Healthcare.
I thoroughly enjoy working at Lewisham Hospital. Although it can be challenging at times and extremely busy Lewisham Hospital is very supportive in staff training, providing a number of courses for staff to do which helps a lot. Lewisham Hospital is very committed to patient care and tries its best to manage the needs of patients. Management are not always supportive and can be hard to contact, workload can be heavy going but overall I enjoy working here. It is a good Hospital, always trying to do well and support all. I would recommend working here, but you have to be dedicated and hard working and prepared to be flexible.

I really enjoyed working in close collaboration with other professionals, especially the OT team. Lovely and friendly people. As a an activities coordinator and a carers' lead I really enjoyed my role- I got to work very closely with the patients on the acute ward and learnt a lot from my supervisor and the multidisciplinary team. The experience is invaluable! 
I also became more aware of my own limitations, strengths and weaknesses.
 It's not just a job, you have to have a passion for it and compassion for the patients or else the stress can get to you.

In patient hospital hence patient's own drugs screened and checked for new arrivals admitted to hospital. Charts taken in and recorded as continuously brought up for screening and dispensing depending on ward rounds. Checking Croydon community mental health prescriptions in between including dossett boxes where necessary. Clozapine drug screening and checking for relevant patients. 
  Weekly checking and recording of controlled drug cupboard. Dealing with doctors and nurses queries when necessary. Checking of in patient drug dispensing. 
   Ensuring all dispensing ready for porter's deliveries twice a day.

Working at the hospital was a complete different expectation to what i imagined it to be. its well maintained and everyone is very determined. of course they would be, its a hospital! but for some reason i imagined it to be very scary and all the workers are moving quickly. 
A Typical day at work is spending time with the elderly patients and just speaking with them about their life's and latest news. it was a very sweet environment and despite being at a mental ward it was a very calming atmosphere which made me feel safe. the most enjoyable part of the job was when i completed care packages and supported patients with their meal times.
