St-Helena-Hospice

I worked in Head Office at St Helena for two years. While I fully support the mission of hospice care and hoped to contribute positively, my experience of the internal working culture fell far short of the values the organisation promotes publicly.

During my time there, I found the work environment lacked clear leadership and consistent support. At times, it was challenging to perform effectively due to a lack of guidance and constructive feedback. The high rate of staff turnover significantly impacted team morale and created a sense of instability.

I also observed unprofessional behaviour, such as raised voices in private meetings and instances where colleagues were visibly distressed. These experiences contributed to what felt like a high-pressure, emotionally challenging environment.

There were also moments where I encountered or overheard language that I felt was inappropriate or contrary to the organisation’s stated commitment to inclusivity. Although I was invited to contribute to internal inclusion initiatives, I struggled to see meaningful change during my time there.

I believe strongly in compassionate, values-led care – not just for patients, but for staff too. I hope the organisation takes on board feedback like this to better support its team and reflect its mission in everyday workplace culture.

I have learned a great deal since starting. This includes undertaking a whole range of duties such as keeping the shelves clean and tidy and full of books, that have also been sorted to see if they are in good quality. In addition, I serve customers both on the book till and on the coffee till, in the latter case also helping to serve refreshments. I also go to the bank on occasions to pay in the earnings from previous days.

I very much enjoy the managers I work with, who are generally very approachable, as well as the wonderful co-workers.

The hardest part is sometimes the amount of customers to be served, which can be busy. Especially when only a few volunteers are working at a time. But I enjoy in particular the feeling of helping to support a widely known and supported hospice charity, by providing necessary funds to keep the charity going for as long as possible.

as a volunteer role there's no wages but with great people and a friendly atmosphere it's always a fun place to be, the customers are friendly and like a chat, there's always something to do be it sorting donations or ironing to serving customers, it's a great place to build your retail and customer service experience or to give you something meaningful to fill your time and help a good charity, you'll make friend, have fun and learn lots working with St Helena in their /charity shops

I enjoyed the work greatly because I could work in a team or alone. I believe working here has improved my social skills because I can talk to most people of all ages. The most enjoyable part was talking to coworkers and customer. The hardest part of the job was when customers come in and spoke very little english.

I learnt so much from working here because it was my first job and i learnt how to work the till, how to decide if a donated item is worth putting on shop floor or to bin it.

Lovely caring and compassionate nurses and HCA’s. Sadly if your face doesn’t fit then expect a rough ride. HR and managers show zero duty of care to their staff, they have ruined people’s careers and lives. Excellent nurses have been forced out or left due to unfair treatment, they show no loyalty for years of service and cover their mistakes. I’m amazed they haven’t been investigated for their poor conduct and bias, if you want to work here then make sure you belong to a good union. 

A typical day at work is a busy day, running around stock taking and seeing to the wonderful customers. 
I learnt to use the tills and manage the stock, sort through what's good to put on shelves and what's not good. 
The management is lovely and friendly, keeps you on your feet and always finds new stuff for you to do,treats the customer well and puts them first.. 
The co-workers are easy to get on with and friendly, always help the customers find what they are looking for.

The people I work with are amazing.

I don't find my job stressful 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Everyone I very friendly and welcoming 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I answer the phone. Welcome friends and family of our in patients. Make sure they know where they are going. Take them to where they need to go.

I loved my role and really enjoyed working with the patients and visitors.   I found the facilities management were a disgrace though.   It was a complete hierarchy, my direct manager was dishonest on numerous occasions, they had little regard for their staffs health and well-being and the way they treated lower level staff was appalling.   Such a shame for an organisation that should be about care and compassion.

 Nurses are very hard working and very committed. Kitchen staff can be great if you fit in.
Very enjoyable job, people are really grateful for the services provided by all the staff.
Working day very busy, but goes quickly.
Kitchen needs updating but workable.
Everybody helps each other, team work very important.
For me the most important part of the job is serving the patient they re all so grateful .

Reverse order. Clinical staff amazing HR good. The bad, I have 40 years experience in trades, I was employed by the Estate's dept, I only lasted 2 months as in my opinion the Estate's Manager is an overbearing, arrogant Manager wit ZERO people skills, pressure and stress from clock in to clock out. All for not much more than minimum wage, AVOID unless you are desperate!!
