I worked for stearn for nearly ten years, working on average 50 hours a week many drivers worked more but would only get paid for contracted 43 hours though did get a profit share which management said made up for this but never even got enough to cover all hours worked.  

Managers attitude to any grievance was if you don't like the job there's the door 

Health and safety was a joke only interested if it suited them vans would regularly go out all most twice the legal limit for the van and the mangers would says it's OK as long as you don't get stopped 

All so on the point of the profit share scheme this was worked out on managers discretion and as it was ment to be a sack able offence to discuss the amount given  many still did and the difference between to driver doing same duties and hours could be as much as 2 thousand pounds depending if you were in favour 

After leaving the company and working for new employer who pays well for work done and care about its employees and look to push them to achieve the potential instead of treating everyone as replaceable I realise what a waste of 10 years wouldn't advise anyone to work for stearn especially at the Bristol branch

In the mornings it would be quiet until about 10.30, in this time i would sort out any left over paperwork from the previous day, open the post as normal, processing and passing invoices.

Every hour i would get checked off paperwork to book in goods then i would cross reference them with the invoices.

Any queries would be during the cross referencing and matching of invoices with the goods dispatch notes before processing i would call the manufacturer to deal with the discrepancies

What i enjoyed most was the invoices and claiming back money which was ours through credits and debit notes.

Near the end of day i will put all invoices that was dealt with by the Telesales department into order by post code and route them to the correct vehicle for deliveries next day.

About 5pm which is nearly home time as i finished at 5.30 i will pass as much invoices as i can until 5.15 then i would start putting paperwork together and prioritizing what is needed to do in the morning before work gets busy.

I learnt how to make decisions on my own accordance with out having to keep asking questions, learned the correct way of dealing with discrepancies or general queries.

I worked at Stearn for a few years, I found the management to be fair. The rewards were significant if you did your job well and understood the profit sharing ethos of the business. Winter was busy and we worked hard, summer was more relaxed. The management recognised this and the majority of the team felt valued. This is not a place for shirkers who just want to hide and take the money, but it is rewarding financially if you get stuck in. 
Most staff got in early because they wanted to which says lots about the culture of the business. The vans are new and well kept, the customers are friendly. Everyone was always invited out on free nights out provided by suppliers even the warehouse and drivers which is unusual. Overall there is a family vibe to the place and everyone gets on. I left for a few extra quid in my basic salary. This was a big mistake.
Lots of people progress through the business especially in the office, as well as people from the warehouse having the opportunity to move into the office.

Whilst its not for everyone, as someone who took pride in their work, I would recommend Stearn.

My day would start from entering the busy warehouse and find out which route i have for the day.
Having learnt this i would load my van with the goods and after i would plan my route accordingly from the nearest to the furthest,I would meet everyday business owners and would deliver there goods and then hold on to monies given to me to be cashed out at the till when i got back to the depot,a good knowledge of london was a great benefit because you couldnt just stay on the main roads all the time due to the customers wanting there goods delivered on quick tme.
the toughest part of the job was learning my route and the most enjoyable was meeting the customers on a daily basis.

When I got into work would load my van with the deliveries that had been left on my bench and then set of to deliver the goods to the retailers.
Sometimes had to go into the warehouse and work so learnt what my co-workers had to do.
Management where very good and their door was always open if you had a problem that you might need to talk through.
The hardest part of the job was the traffic and the most enjoyable part was being on my own and arranging the route to do the deliveries according to what the traffic was like.
Got on well with my co-workers when I saw them but getting in earlier than them to get on the road early didn't always see a lot of them but did have telephone conversations with the office staff.

I'm an agency driver working out of the Bristol depot, I have spent the majority of the last 12 months working for Stearn.
What a fantastic bunch of people, as soon as they get to know that you are not some agency driver trying to take the mickey, you are welcomed into the fold, almost part of a family - and this is prevalent from the boss to the boys in the warehouse, & other drivers.
Their fleet of vehicles are well maintained, 
The routes are reasonable and well planned,
They never pester you when you are out driving unless it is important,
Overall in my experience, an absolute joy to work for.
For once I look forward to Monday mornings.

I worked for stearn in there Gateshead branch back in 1978-1988 this was my 1st job at the age of 16,I started as a store lad back in those days,really enjoyed working for them,serving customers,loading and unloading wagons,processing paperwork,invoices,booking goods out and sorting out returns,really got on well with management and staff from other branches via telelphone,them I progressed in to the office doing telesales ,taking orders of customers sorting there queries out

Worked long hours (50hrs + a week) at Leighton Buzzard depot, no overtime paid, annual profit share scheme didn't even cover the extra hours worked. This company wants its cake and eat it. Staff there were institutionalized and don't know any better, happy to gossip and stab you in the back ....  give this place a very wide berth unless you're happy to work for free.

This company is a joke and they only care about the
pcm and the directors in Newbury. 
They treat you like mud no matter how much  money you make them.
