This is a large university therefore I can only talk about the experience in my faculty/department. Engagement of colleagues varies widely with more weight towards providing a good experience to students. Actually, everything is very much about maximising the student experience, frequently in detriment of the staff. With exceptions, students are neither the most engaged nor the most brilliant which makes teaching very much frustrating in comparison to top-tier universities. 

Staff is generally left behind... no intellectual support, no extra benefits, poor salary (relatively to other London-based universities), no intellectual challenges. Research-oriented staff does not get benefits and frequently more junior colleagues without a strong research track-record get promoted and get scholarships for their phd students... 

There is generally no collegiality or collaborative environment, and definitely no minimum politeness, if you ever get responses to inquiries from most colleagues. Of course there are some excellent staff who are exceptions. To be fair, it can be a good working place if one likes to focus on teaching and does not care about poor pay or exciting job. About 90% of colleagues said they want to resign as soon as possible. Though most stay anyways (everyone has its own reasons...), I've seen many excellent people leaving during the few years I've worked there.

The values of the university became clear once I decided to resign. I got completely ignored by the management and admin colleagues, and everything became difficult to finalise. Luckily, some friendly academic colleagues are there to support you.

Whilst working at the University of Greenwich I was able to learn a lot of skills that could potentially help me in the future. I was able to get an idea of how a work environment is, and I was able to adapt to this easily and effectively. 
During the days, the tasks I had to carry out mostly consist of Admin work, ICT and filing invoices. I was also responsible for archiving, marking the students grades using their computing system and filing documents for the finance team. I enjoyed meeting new people and being given the opportunity to show how well I could perform. 
My manager and my colleagues were very polite, and were able to teach me how their business operates and help me learn how to work effectively. At the end of my experience the colleagues informed me that they enjoyed working with me, and provided me with a present for the hard work that I had done. I was very thankful to them for this and for the opportunity that they had given me. 
I did not really find any part of the job hard as if there was a problem or I wasn't able to perform a task, then I was confident in asking for help where it was needed so I was able to them perform it in the future to the best of my ability. All the learning and feedback they had taught me has been very beneficial.

A typical day would involve me getting to Uni before the open day starts, preparing myself and waiting for prospective film students to arrive. Once i had a group of students i would escort them band their parents around the site doing a small talk at each about what the students would be using the sites for etc. 
I personally would talk about the Uni lifestyle in London swell as the course because I know as a student myself that is what people want to know. 
I would answer any queries about the course that the students/parents have to the best of my ability.
All of my fellow staff where all students so it was once to get to meet other people from different course and also meet third years from my own course.
I get great amount of satisfaction out of helping and talking to new people, making them feel comfortable and allow them to answer any questions they have.

Sometimes I would have to sit with students who had come for interviews and again i approached this in the same manner, just making them feel comfortable and telling them about what I did in my course, the Pros/Cons.

The hardest part of the job would have to be choosing which sandwiches home after work as the choice was reasonable extensive. (normally chose coronation chicken)

University of Greenwich is a really great employer. The location is beautiful beyond words, and just walking to and from the office is a treat. The team was really great to work with even though there was not a lot of overlapping in our job responsibilities. But we gelled really well and we genuinely became friends. 
The only downside for me was that my relationship with the manager wasn’t the best. At any point that I felt I needed some help, her first response was quite harsh, even though she did help me out with the issues eventually. Maybe it was something with my way of communicating it, I don’t really know. But, her reaction discouraged me from seeking her help when needed, and I would only go to her if I absolutely had no other option. However, that is just one person out of the thousands that work there. 
Overall, UOG is a great place to work, with lots of opportunities for training and progressing within the organisation. 

Telephone campaigner
•	Logging financial contributions for special projects.
•	Undertaking reviews and making decisions on complaints.
•	Dealing with complaints in writing and sending out correspondence to ex-university students.
•	Was able to work on my telephone manner and negotiation skills.
•	Meeting daily targets as informed by management.

Helped me improve my telephone manner skills and helped with my communication skills.
Managemnet team where very helpful in explaining the role and provided regular training.
Challenging part of the job was to leave at the end of the day without hitting my targets.
Enjoyed the stress free environment and the team was very friendly and helpful in supporting each other.

Learnt about the Education Liaison Unit, the Open Day Team detailed understanding on all departments of the University and learnt sign language in order to implement when working with disabled students. Did demo presentations related to higher education, student finance, recruitment fairs and conventions, community events, conference and higher education open days.                                                                                                                                                   

Event Assistant - work very closely with the Access and Widening Participation Team. Activities delivered by the unit are typically; presentations related to higher education, attendance at: recruitment fairs and conventions, community events, conferences, Higher Education Open Days and Evenings, Parents’ Information Events as well as hosting generic days on any of our campuses or special focus days e.g. specific subjects or for a target audience.


Working at the University of Greenwich has been an enriching experience filled with growth opportunities and a supportive atmosphere. A typical day at work was at events or open days, or campus visits at the university. The staff in charge would give us a memo for the day and clear instructions for the entire event. The events usually went smoothly and the staff are always nice and fun to work with. I learnt better communication skills, presentation skills and the ability to use my own initiative in sticky situations. My co-workers are nice and easy to get along with and all ready and willing to work. The hardest part of the job was usually the presentations because I was shy, but I got better at it. The best parts of the job was having to talk to students who were interested in coming to university and convincing them that it is the right choice and would be a great experience.

You get to meet a lot of people. There aren't a lot jobs to take, so it's pretty difficult to get a job inside of the university. As a rep you get to go on meetings and influence the universities society and culture. It's interesting and good for your communication skills and management as well. As well you get to understand more people from different cultures.
Decisions are the hardest part. Once there was a meeting when a group wanted to legalize the idea of creating a society where Fascism was the subject. It was a paradoxal decision as if we denied that it was a fascism verdict. So is difficult to please everyone, but the decision must be taken to protect everyone's rights and to be a good influence for the inside and outside of the university.

 Liaises with security staff to assist library users during opening times in the late evening; provides support to users in the use of the library catalogue and self-service machines.
 Provides assistance to library users with basic IT operations to include the use of printers and photocopiers, and in the logging-in of PCs and other research equipment.
 Maintains the appearance of the library by proper shelving of books according to category and respective systems; enforces library rules and regulations and reports non-compliance to senior library and security staff
