Lots of colleagues who do their best everyday, but also many who don’t and/or are, frankly, unsuited for the role they’re in.

I think that may be to do with the location of the campuses. It’s hard to attract the best talent to the area, and while the salaries are good for the local cost of living, they don’t necessarily well reflect the sector.

I personal feel that the University tries to do much. As the “University of Opportunity”, it’s great that it wants to have as much on offer as it can for its students, but that’s a difficult target to reach in reality.

There are no where near enough employees to thrive in every area, and all that results in is compromise after compromise and burnt out employees who end up becoming like the slackers they have to make up for.

The continual budget cuts have decimated morale and progress. Each year every department has to make a saving, to the point where it now feels like we’re trying to do our jobs with both hands tied behind our backs.

It’s a shame as it’s a lovely place to work, and most colleagues are friendly, but it’s dragged down by a lack of competence from a frighteningly large number of employees, a lack of budget to innovate in key areas, and  a workforce who are becoming increasingly disillusioned.

If you can overlook these issues, then it’s a great place to earn decent pay, play your part and finish on time every day. However, if you’re ambitious or want to be a driver for change, then I’d recommend looking elsewhere.

I hope things can turn around from here, I really do.

The university is not a good place to work, at least not for low scale administrators. Barely any training is given, staff just expected to know what they're doing from the get go. 
Managers are mostly on power trips, not listening to staff, not willing to change anything and always getting their employees to do their work for them, the higher the scale you are the less work you seem to do. 
Too many students and not enough staff. Staff in student facing roles face too many problems and aren't backed up by their managers.
No thanks given to staff who go above and beyond in their roles, no recognition, no motivation. There is no point in pushing yourself to your limits when you aren't acknowledged for it. 
The university is also facing redundancies in the next few months, due to their over spending, the university is low on staff as it is. 
The campus is open access meaning anyone can get in! Barely any security and when phoned are unresponsive. Staff and students aren't protected as they should be. 
This place needs to listen to the needs of their staff, high sick rate and a high staff turn over can only point to one thing, you aren't treating your staff as you should, invest in your staff and they will invest in you.
I would not recommend anyone applies here, it seems the place is getting worse and worse.

A day in the workplace did not feel like 'work', so to speak. I was directly contacted by first year students whom were studying the same or similar courses that I was studying. We would arrange a time to meet at the library or within a classroom, where i would then assist them with both academic and non-academic queries. an example would be if a student was unaware of social events or the various societies situated in and around campus, it was my job to provide more information and guidance on this matter. The workplace culture was very relaxed and so made the whole experience all the more worthwhile as there was no sense of pressure i.e meeting deadlines etc. The hardest aspect of the job was dealing with students that had issues outside of the university. Although i really wanted to help, the only way I was allowed to help was to refer them to the student enabling team which catered specifically to those types of issues. The most rewarding and enjoyable aspect of the job was seeing student come to me who were initially extremely shy and introverted, blossom both academically and personally into confident, hardworking individuals who looked forward to the following years of their degree!

Working with many people from many different backgrounds and many levels from upper management right the way to student thinking about higher education. I have provided advice and support to students on enrolment and registration, programme management, filter and refer (as appropriate) academic and non-academic queries.
Monitor and support engagement and attendance amongst students to enusre students get the most out of what they pay for and that the university is proactive in helping students.

Supporting individual student difficulties; identifying any reasons for non-engagement and acting proactively to resolve these, in liaison with colleagues

Take a proactive role in following up students “at risk” – as indicated in the first instance by non-submission of assessment or other identifiable non-engagement.

Work as part of the School Office team in collecting and reporting data.

Review and ensure the accuracy of information to students.

Graduating at the University in Graphic Communication, I had the chance to reunite with staff and students but in
a professional manner. Working within Marketing at Print Services Unit gave me the experience and knowledge of
the all aspects of the printing side of Graphic Design.
From designing to producing film and plates for the presses, I learned to produce high quality work ready for print
onto Litho Printing machines. Duties involved preparing artwork and liaising with staff and internal schools and
departments in producing University documents to University standards and guidelines.
Working within such as large organisation, I am able to use my excellent organisational skills. I gained the
responsibility of maintaining all artwork produced for all areas of the University in controlled formatted referenced
archives so that they can be retrieved easily at a later date for further development or updates.

I have gained experience in the processes and procedure to ensure the delivery of courses remain successful and student retention is high.  I have worked closely with the Head of School for Mathematics and Computer Science.  Working to strict deadlines I have managed the diaries for the Head of School and the Academics who provide the teaching.  I have organised meetings and events with a conscious control of the budget spend.

My colleagues in the Faculty of Science and Engineering have been one of the best groups of people I have worked with and the University Ethos is to nurture staff as well as students to maintain success.

There has been 'no hard part' of the work involved as I am well qualified to undertake all administration tasks it has been refreshing however to say that and the University must be congratulated.

The most enjoyable is knowing that I have made a difference to the busyness of the academic day.

The University is a large regional university situated in the West Midlands. It offers opportunities to study for degrees to students from diverse cultural backgrounds.  It is a leading player in the region in terms of both provision of study programmes but also in the delivery of applied research that interacts immediately with local communities and industries. It has been praised in marketing research as being united in its embracing of this diversity.  It is a friendly and supportive place to work in yet also offers challenges.  Staff relate to its culture and have a tendency to stay for long periods.  it has rightly been called the 'Engine of Black Country Regeneration.

My time as an intern has provided me with the highest level of administrative experience I could ever have wished to have gained within a working environment.

My work colleagues have predominantly been friendly, cooperative, passionate about their work and most importantly, helpful and supportive with me whenever I have been in need of guidance.

Since starting my internship with the DLHE project, my confidence has continued to grow and I feel confident the all the skills I have gained from an internship that was originally stated to last 4 months but has gone on to last over a year now will be of high value in any walk of life I choose to follow int he future.

A bottom ranked university with big ideas but do not have the infrastructure nor the management talent to take this university any further. The workload has increased dramatically over the last number of years and where our department scored well in the subject league tables, this has now dropped dramatically.

Management is a huge issue in the university with many people in positions that do not reflect their qualifications. Professors for example with all but no peer reviewed papers. Individuals in management with poor ideas and initiatives that lead no where, are are not properly evaluated which lead to a tired, and stressed work force. 

My role is somewhat varied! Each day has its surprises underneath the yearly change in Elected Officers executed their manifestos, admin duties, website input, sales, club deals and problem solving equipment! My role has developed me more in flexibility, initiative, planning, leadership, detail handling and tolerance! Not the easiest of jobs with such heavy workloads formed from others sometimes lacking the planning skills, but that's Marketing for you!
Self motivation and being left to be creative makes the job colourful in comparison to other desk job departments.
