The hardest part of the job was listening to people crying on the phone because of how they had been effected by the crime committed against them... It was was sometimes difficult, especially if children had been involved as it often effected the entire family and the community around them.

The most enjoyable part of the job was knowing that my colleagues and I had perhaps made someone feel more comfort in knowing that there are people in the wider community that actually care about what had happened to them and that they had someone they could contact, if they couldn't talk to anyone else about the crime... They were assured that anything they discussed (provided there were no threats of violence, etc) would be kept confidential and that all staff at Victim Support are non-judgemental and empathetic to their individual need for support.

It is a shame that the Basingstoke office closed down in 2011. I would have liked to have been able to return to work for them following my recovery from illness in 2010 and major surgery in early 2011. They were an excellent organisation and it was a privilege to be involved with their work.

Working for Victim Support is an invaluable career choice and can be used as a stepping stone for people looking to work in NGOs and the public sector. It gives you just the right amount of responsibility to learn the trade and develop. You can gain a good understanding about the public and the type of life a lot of people lead. Most service users are usually sharing the same lifestyle that has resulted from past trauma, poor education and broken homes. However, you can generally help and give back to your community. Sometimes you do feel like a "jack of all trades" with no specialism, and no realistic prospect of career development, unless you use this role as I said before as a stepping stone and move on.
Your typical day in this role is to receive calls from the public and other services. To the public you offer VS services, advice, short term emotional support, complete a risk assessment and can either make an onward referral to suitable support services, usually to more specialised cases or complete an assessment for long-term support that will be provided by VS. Can be emotionally draining and desensitises you to people's problems.
In terms of management, they can be easily manipulated and treat some employees more favourably than others. I would definitely say sometimes this place can get quite unprofessional. There is clear lack of leadership and support. Seniors become managers but really lack the strength and the capability to be a good manager.


I have just started volunteering for victim support after doing the first core training I now am shadowing a member of staff and making the first contact to clients informing those who seek help of what victim support can offer. Already I have found a new confidence that I though I lost, the meaning of being non judgmental, diversity, way of listening and giving and the importance of the safety of our users and ourselves.
The staff are so welcoming and make it easy for you to ask them questions. I am and will be working with vulnerable people who may be looking for support whet her from VC or other agencies.
The management team are very supportive and are there if you need assistance, they also give you the change to sign up for more training, so you are able to work on supporting those who have suffered different levels crimes. There is always someone you can talk to and my co workers make what can be a can be a challenge place of work more easier. the atmosphere in the office is is not stressful. They all focus on there roles and put 100% yet the office has a relaxed vibe.
The hardest part of this job is not becoming too involved when working with a client or becoming too emotionally attached.
The most enjoyable part of this job is the knowledge that I have been able to give the support that each client may need, that they may feel to smile or have some closure after their ordeal.

On a typical day I make calls to victims of crime to introduce them support after an incident. I give immediate emotional and practical support and am able to make onward referrals for further support. 

I have learned how to communicate effectively and developed a good knowledge of the criminal justice system. I have learned to work well within a team and to take my own initiative to work on my own. 

I have found management to be hit and miss with different managers having different styles. I feel there is not always the support available for the staff as the role can be challenging at times. 

The staff in my office are extremely friendly and supportive and make working there a pleasure. 

The hardest part of the job has been having to hear of very difficult, often distressing situations from service users. I feel that the training is lacking in some areas, particularly in handling difficult cases and have sometimes felt a little helpless and unprepared. 

The best part of the job is the satisfaction when you feel you can really help and service user and you feel the conversation you have had has helped and supported an individual.

Typical day at work included checking & responding to emails.  dealing with issues raised by staff.  Supervision meetings with staff at their satellite offices.  Partnership meetings with various criminal justice agencies.  Assisting colleagues where required.  Analysing work and comparing results against targets, where a shortfall, setting up actions to adjust work and meet targets.  Bidding for funds to continue charitable work.

Management at National level was positive for most part, however, locally, it was very deficient, with 6 senior managers being forced out of their roles by local management.

Workplace culture was very sensitive to those we provided services to.  With 2 main services, there was a definite split in workloads and expectations.

Hardest part of the job was commuting to and from work.  Most enjoyable was dealing directly with volunteers and clients

I was a volunteer with Victim Support for 7 Years. I found great personal reward within my time at Victim Support. 
On a day to day basis I would support a wide spectrum of people from all walks of life. No two people were the same. I have supported all ages, genders, religions etc. There is no restrictions within Victim Support, everyone is treated equally no matter who they are. 
Within my time at Victim Support I learned a lot about myself, who I am and my outlook on life. 
The hardest part of the job was being able to detach yourself from the heart ache of what victims of crime have gone through. Having someone offload their deepest feelings and fears to you can be very exhausting and a strain on your emotions but you become strong through experience and adapt where needed.
The most enjoyable part of the job was seeing the smiles on peoples faces when they have been through the judicial system and have emerged from the other side as a stronger person who is one the road to a happier life.

I must say working at Victim Support has been such a rewarding opportunity for me, as I have a genuine interest in community and alot of my work at this organisation is based on supporting victims who have been affected by crime. 

My typical day here includes, calling victims who have been referred to the service and offering them support over the phone or face to face; checking if victims have been given an update from the police and making following up calls to see if their circumstances have changed and they are not in danger, which is the most enjoyable part of the job. 

Within my experience at victim support, I have learnt to control my feelings, and focus on the cilents who are more vulnerable and need my assistance. 

My co-workers are also an asset to my job, as they are the most determined and supportive individuals I have worked with. They are so passionate about the victims they meet and always without fail go the extra mile in helping victims.

I typically see clients on 50 minutes slots.  We assess their needs and agree on strategies and implementation. 

I have learned an enormous amount of skills relating to how to treat clients of a diverse cultural background, religious beliefs, ages, social settings, gender and physical abilities. I have also learned further about domestic violence and its dynamics, risk management and safety planning, hate crimes and disability awareness. 

My co-workers are excellent and helpful. We work in a harmonious and supportive manner. 

The most challenging aspect of this position are the limitations I am faced with.  In most cases I need to liaise with other agencies in order to provide a holistic care for my clients.  This process can be quite frustrating for some clients and their expectations must be constantly managed. 

I enjoy seeing the progress of my clients.

Was given my own Victims to work with, which was very challenging, rewarding and worthwhile. The work involved calling a victim and listening to how they feel after the crime? Then working with them to help them move on. Sometimes I would meet the Victim at a coffee shop or at their home depending on the circumstance? I was able to use the Counselling skills and Studies I had learnt (Even though I would say you don't Counsel your Victim.) Building a relationship of trust, advice (where available?) and sign posting Victims onto professional help, if necessary, Writing a report each week to update any details and basically helping the Victim to feel listened to and heard.

Just wish there was paid work in this charity.

Very insecure employment as most jobs are dependant on short term funding. Poor management who seem happy to lose experienced staff in favour of new young inexperienced staff who don't ask difficult questions. Poor work culture despite policies on flexible working and equal opportunities which are generally ignored. Work is stressful with little support although clinical supervision is a plus. Some staff seem to be "favourites" and get away with light workloads while management is remote, amateurish and lazy. On the plus side it is very rewarding to help clients achieve stability in their lives.
