Axis Group Integrated Services Limited

I was employed by Axis Security for seven years plus first at a town centre shopping and residential site and then a remote industrial manufacturing site with a team of 4 officers working 4 on 4 off 12 hour day and night shifts.  The site covered a large area and took a hour to cover on foot. Contact with control was intermittent due to poor Mobile signals which highlighted a health and safety risk if injuries occurred disabling an officer.  If check call was missed due to remote site it could be three plus hours before a supervisor could respond, as the site only operates a  occasional night shift while the site in normally closed Friday and weekends. 
This fact was highlighted to Axis senior management and supervisory staff at regular intervals with no reasonable action taken to provide personal alarms. 
Good bad and indifferent supervisors, 7 came and went during my time at this site plus a couple of area managers.
Pay was below that paid on other sites , while welfare facilities were good with tea coffee milk etc Foc plus a works canteen. Relationships with site management and workforce was excellent, while Axis only liked to highlight its premium sites, and often failed to provide cover for holidays and sickness resulting in officers working a extended shift of 18 hours before being releaved. 
Axis security's northern areas were manly greater Manchester and merseyside, and appeared to have great difficulty in providing extra cover and suitable training for officers outside it main area of operation. Although such as first aid courses we latterly offered it was the norm for the client to have to pay for them.
Relief officers many from agencies lacked spoken English and very few had any IT skills or CCTV licences, but apparently appeared masters at playing games on either their I pads or the clients PCs. Subsequent site patrols were not carried out, which resulted in a large theft and installation of checkpoints and additional CCTV which resulted in patrols being carried out, but no indication of providing better training for relief personnel. 
Axis security like many UK security services have a growing problem of recruiting the right candidate's due to the pay structure working long and unsociable hours. The industry is becoming dependent on foreign nationals many who cannot communicate in English and have poor standards of education. Job centres are offering free SIA training to many foreign nationals unsuitable for security work. Yes there's many foreign nationals who have adapted well into the security industry, but are still in a minority. 
Axis security need to certainly make a large effort to provide trained professionals as managers and supervisors plus ensuring that its security officers on the ground have the back up needed when emergencies arise, as so far this is not the case.

Company corporations provide physical security on to site should be paying at least the living wage that always discussed in government and parliament
The national minimum wage should be abolished
An average security officer should be getting at least 20K per annum as standard but most of these companies I just paying you peanuts the lot of experience men and women out there that do the job well and quality is better than quantity still paid low wage. All security company and the industry itself need to recognise that if you want good reliable honest trustworthy people then security corporations need to start listening to their staff and paying them way above the national living wage than just the government's recommendations of the minimum wage cos if company is paid more companies wood retain a higher level in staff staying with their company to which Staff are being paid lower rates and then someone's paying a higher rate then staff just going to move to whose is paying the highest rate and training is a factor and experience he's also Factor but even with experience or or training that you've had within the industry doesn't seem to increase the individuals wage or annual salary to which the security industry now needs to change a lot and this is my opinion not just on one company but all of them in the whole of the UK and Ireland... so companies need to take note of what their staff is saying and not just the client themselves because there's a lot of companies out there they're not paying the high rate and the sun they don't pay holiday pay or double time to which they should for working bank holidays to which they don't so there needs to be some sort of legislation where and individual security officer must be on at least 20K per annum as an average

Disrespectful to the individual, every manager is worse then the previous one. Don't know where they find such incompetent people. When you rise any concerns about work conditions or personnel you will be bullied in return. They employ a lot of people without basic computer skills or any idea of customer service and poor personal presentation. What can you expect, if they paying a minimum leaving wage? And if you don't like it - nobody stops you: get out. Doesn't matter how long are you working for the company or on site that they took over, you are a PEASANT, and the managers will make sure you know that. It's a common practice to blame and punish the whole team if one person screws something up. Even if the concerns were raised in the past that the person is not right for the job! Management never accepts blame for anything. They expect you and your team to deliver highest quality of service but want to pay you with peanuts in return.

Working with axis is simple enough, the training is short and sweet but the probation period is 6 months. 

some colleagues are more permanent while others come and go, you will make friends, but you will always have somebody new. 

work hours however are rather all over the place, they are somewhat flexible, but expect to get up for a 5am shift one day, then have a 15:00 start the next, sometimes there is less than 12 hours between shifts. 

management has changed hands a few times in my year working there, but currently the management standard has risen a great deal. the new management is considerably greater. more helpful and much friendlier. 

the hardest part of the job, i would say, is the saturdays, on a cloudy day it gets busy depending on where you work, and you will be walking for a solid 4 hours around and around in circles. 

but the easiest part is the faces you meet, the cultural mix in the work environment means theres always somebody interesting to speak to from any part of the world.

Most security companies are very similar. 

Couple things I like about Axis is they provided dry cleaning on our site. I worked for major security companies before and this usually is not provided, I get the impression Axis is very focused on officers uniform and their presentation and proud of the fact.

They sometimes have a standby officer, this is an additional officer paid out of Axis pocket. the stand by officer comes on-site in case anyone blows out or is late to shift if they are no longer needed they get moved to another site if they are required. This is amazing for the sites as it removes the concern of running 1 man down if someone blows out. but for the stand by officers, it is a blow when they get sent home if they are not required anywhere with only 4 hours pay for the day.

Other than these 2 points they operate like any other security company.

It is an absolute pleasure to work for Axis Security. I work with some very talented people. The management here are outstanding. They listen to you, care about you, and good performance is always rewarded, which in turn makes you actually want to perform well.

The workplace culture is very good. We are a close knit team who continually work to improve our team work. Unlike 99% of other companies, your own colleagues do not try to throw you under the bus at every opportunity. Recruitment is done well at Axis security. I haven't met one single bad person working here.

Like me, if you are careful selecting security companies, you can't go wrong with Axis security. 

The most enjoyable part of the job is helping customers and playing a part in the safety of the local community. 


Here I have learned what a good security company is like with a good team and supporting environment.

The client sets the wage so I can't complain there.

A dis-organised poorly run company especially in the midlands. Multiple pay issues, don't seem to know what they are doing. The management team only fix things and paperwork two hours before any site audit. 

They even Hoodwink the auditor with cleverly constructed answers to ensure they pass despite the assignment instructions being out of date, or not reflecting any updates. 

I don't rate them and the effects on my mental health from this company have effectively ruined my working life.

If your forced to TUPE consider going elsewhere because never have I had so many problems and so much stress as I got for working at Axis.

Obviously, it is really easy to be critical of any business.  However, I like to think of it as a journey.  When I started employment the business wasnt particularly pleasant.  But over the past 4-5 years it has changed beyond recognition.  Yes, we have problems and issues, yes we have challenges.  But I believe Axis is a fair employer who does its best to do whats right.  

Unfortunately, not everyone appears to have that experience, but we do spend our time ironing out issues/making changes.

Some jobs are what you make them....the negatives aren't always just on the side of the employer.  We are all responsible for ourselves.

I work incredibly hard for this organisation because I am passionate about its ability and growth for the future.  Sometimes the output you receive, resonates to the input you contribute.

Interviewed for a role.... During interview clearly highlighted career aspirations etc and what I am leaving after been told the dream of what I am joining into. 2 months in my role was placed at.risk of redundancy and even had my line manager telling me my role will go #off the record. so disorganized they tried to give me a hard time for not changing my family plans on the evening at 5pm so to go into the city centre to walk around with an auditor because my line manager forgot to inform anyone.. no work life balance and pay for the role is below the going rate. Advertise 40 hours a week  for you salary .... On call every weekend , being woke out of hours. reality is you work 16 hour days. Need I say more ? The only good thing was it pushed me to find another role.

Axis security utilise the "zero hours" contract for most of their staff. 
However, unlike other companies, they still treat their staff properly rather than taking advantage.

Axis pay rates are amongst the highest in the industry for security guards.

I was sad to be TUPE'd away from Axis but the position I currently work in is more secure and had a set amount of hours per week.

The downside with Axis is that even the best and brightest, the most capable and eager of guards are not given the training and opportunities to progress their careers. 
Additionally, on the sites where there are set hours, they are usually 60hr weeks and work/life balance suffers as a result.
