Sunrise Senior Living

Sunrise senior living poses as very high quality. This isn’t the case however. Horrendously over worked and underpaid, understaffed so it wasn’t possible to provide the level of care that they, as a business, were advertising. Not enough incontinence products, possessions going missing, cheapest products (drinks snacks etc) decanted in to fancy packaging to appear high quality. Residence pay a extortionately high price to live there, and Sunrise doesn’t even have enough carers to provide the basic level of care the residents need. Would definitely not recommend working there, and definitely wouldn’t ever recommend sending your relatives to live at any of their home locations. Really bad management-unorganised and rude. Pretending to care about their staff (having staff meetings to discuss issues) but never acting on what was promised. Especially when it was related to pay. Even though we were so underpaid and staffed- the management team were awarded large bonuses most months. Residents are absolutely not receiving the level of care they are paying for. BOYCOTT.

I have been working at sunrise for a number of years in various communities, I would never think of joining another care company. Sunrise have helped me achieve my goals within the company and continue to help me to strive. The management at my current community are second to none and I can not thank them enough for welcoming me on board, the support from everyone has been amazing and was the best decision for me to join.

Seeing residents happy, smiling and joining in daily activities puts a smile on my face. Not everyday is the same with highs and lows but together we bring each other up and work together to ensure not only the residents are happy but also the team. 

I would have to say the hardest part of my job is losing someone but knowing they was cared for in the best possible way puts my heart at ease. 

I would highly recommend Sunrise to anyone looking for a job in care and the best advice I can give is the more you put in the more you will get out and Sunrise will help you to get there.

I have worked at Sunrise of Mobberley for just over a year now and think it's a brilliant place to work compared to other homes where I've worked. There are options to do qualifications with full support to complete my diploma and a couple of us planning on going on to do our nurse training. The home is quite posh and on a typical day its hard work but very rewarding, with hard work recognised by the managers and you get thanks for doing a good job. We've had free meals, cakes and sweets along with bottles of prosecco if we win employee of the month and you are asked for suggestions for how we can be better as a Home. Plenty of staff are on duty with everyone friendly and willing to help each other out. Deputy Manager is ace and brings her dog to work which is good for the residents, who are lovely, and the Manager is nice and always out and about checking everything is okay and if there are any problems, the office ladies will help yu. They are all approachable and friendly and the most enjoyable part of the job is the team spirit and feeling like you are doing your best. I would recommend Mobberley as a brilliant place to work

The care staff are struggling. When they complain, they are told that the numbers of staff on the floor are safe. Not true. People are not getting good care because carers have too many residents to look after. If anything goes wrong, the carer is blamed. Seniors are stressed out. The night staff senior carer should be promoted, she’s excellent, she speaks to and treats carers like human beings. If she sees you make a mistake, she tells you nicely about your mistake and how to improve. If she was the manager, sunrise would be a good place to work. Unfortunately other people will talk down at you and make you feel like a criminal for making a mistake. Everyone there is miserable and wants to leave. The care staff are not supportive of one another, they are constantly lying on each and reporting one another for stupid things. A day at sunrise is tough. I felt like a failure everyday for putting myself in a position where I’m disrespected, unappreciated and exploited. If you want to be exploited and underpaid then sunrise would be the perfect place to work.

Horrendous company to work for. Poor management. The expectation that is required is totally impossible. Jobs that require 8 people to do are made to be done by 2 people. Takes nearly 18 months to get equipment that is broken, replaced. The management and certain heads of departments treat people like something they've stepped in and get away with their behaviour. It's not what you know, but who you know. Doesn't matter if your right for the job as long as you're a friend of an Gracewell employee you'll get the job. The residents are so lovely and make the jobs there what they are. So many hardworking and loyal staff get taken for granted, they end up leaving with no choice.

A head of department is incredibly busy doing nothing (while the rest are working their socks off) and getting away with talking to their department with no respect and treating them like dirt. 

Avoid this company at all costs.

Even though my time at sunrise was short due to my own personal reasons , I haven’t got a single fault with this company! Sunrise is the one amazing care home , the staff are all lovely and supportive. Management are incredible! They are always there for a chat no matter what! You never feel afraid of asking questions , they are there for you 24/7. The hours are very reasonable , you get decent breaks too!! The residents are just fantastic too! Sunrise interact with their residents the most! They are always thinking of new creative idea’s and fun things to do with the residents. When I was there they had a in house type of salon where residents could get their haircut so they still feel like their living their own life. It is by far the most outstanding care home I have ever worked , I would recommend sunrise to absolutely everyone I know! They are truly an incredible company with incredible staff! 

-Assisting the residents in their personal care is the first priority.
-Assisting them in their activities of daily living. 
-Maintaining their independence and privacy and dignity.
-Life is so short that you never know what will happen next. Value everyone you love.
-Be considerate and open minded and patient when working with vulnerable adults or individuals.
-Team player. Never leave a co-worker by his/her own if you see her/him struggling with the work. Try to help out and explain the proper things to do.
-Seeing the residents suffering from their conditions and seeing them passed away without anybody from the family.
-Seeing them happy and jolly and chatty with their families, seeing them remembering the things they used to do before or telling the story of their lives and hearing them saying thank you even for a little things you did for them is priceless.

Working for sunrise was very productive. There were lots of courses and opportunities to learn about different aspects of care. They encouraged staff to become champions for different things which was a good confidence boost and improved staff skills. They recognised staff’s had work through monthly recognition and rewards.  They had good ethos and values which many tried to implement. Had good pastoral support for staff experiencing trauma and hardship. 

However there was a lot of division within team members where there was the “them and us”. There was a lot of cliques  that seemed to work against each other. This created a lot of animosity with in the staff and management didn’t seem to manage it successfully. There was also a lot of discrimination of different types which is not addressed and is still on going. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Caring for the the residents with state of the art and bespoke equipment and facilities. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The absolute cluelessness of the upper management team. Systemic bullying from senior carers towards new starters

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic, chaotic, cliquey. Try to stay out of it. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
No two days were the same. It all depending on the team supporting you that shift. I'd take a very difficult shift with a decent team and come out smiling. Conversely, an easy shift with useless or ineffective staff members made me quit in the end.

Working in the catering and serving department, you will be on your feet with little to no rest aside from your designated breaks. All of the staff - both in my department and others - were all warm, welcoming people who would spend the time to answer any questions I had. All staff were very hard working, and the residents were lovely to speak to as well. 
It's a job you need a lot of patience for, as well as decent stamina and physical strength. If you have a problem with people making a mess or being stuck in their ways, this job isn't for you.
