Marine Technical Limits (MTL) are a highly specialist company providing support to the owners and operators of FPSO’s specifically in regard to managing the integrity of the hull and associated structures. MTL also provide specialist technical and safety engineering support and project management services for in-water, on-station repairs of FPSO’s during production.
The role
This is a new, standalone role at the centre of our development team. You will be the first point of contact for technical issues raised by our internal users and external clients, across all our products, including PYXIS, our Integrity Management Suite, and our internal applications. You will own the resolution of these issues, and escalate only genuine software defects to the developers.
Much of the work spans software, hardware, and networks, so you will need to be comfortable across all three: able to tell a genuine software defect from a network, hardware, or configuration problem, and to fix the latter yourself.
The aim is to give every query a prompt, capable first response: handling first-line diagnosis, resolving what you can, and passing only genuine, well-evidenced defects to the developers. This needs a sound understanding of how our software behaves, but not the ability to read its source code line by line.
You will own all areas of support, along with the infrastructure our software runs on. This is a technical support role, not desktop support: the focus is our products, the systems that run them, and their networks, rather than routine desktop administration.
Testing plays a part, but it is not the main focus. You will set up and configure test environments and coordinate test execution ahead of each release, rather than owning the whole testing effort.
Day to day, you will work alongside our three developers. Our products are built in .NET and C#, use SQL Server and MongoDB, run on Kubernetes, are hosted in Microsoft Azure, and use network-attached storage (NAS). You do not need experience with all of this; an interest in learning it matters more.
The role is office-based at our premises in Kintore.
Key responsibilities
- First-line support. Be the first point of contact for technical issues from internal users and external clients, triaging, prioritising, and setting clear expectations on timescales.
- Diagnosis across software, hardware, and networks. Work out where a problem actually lies: a software defect, or a hardware, network, or configuration issue.
- Network and infrastructure issues. Investigate and resolve connectivity, network, and infrastructure problems affecting our software.
- Resolution and escalation. Resolve issues within the scope of the role, and escalate genuine defects with clear, documented steps to reproduce.
- Ownership of support. Own all areas of support and the supporting infrastructure, seeing issues through to resolution.
- Client communication and case management. Keep internal users and external clients informed, and track each issue to a clear conclusion.
- Documentation. Maintain support documentation, FAQs, and known-issue records.
- Continuous improvement. Spot recurring problems and patterns, and feed them back to improve the software and reduce future support demand.
- Testing support (a supporting element of the role, not its main focus). Set up and configure test environments, and coordinate test execution ahead of each release.
About you
Above all, this role is for someone with a genuine passion for technology and a can-do approach to problems. We value these far more than qualifications or job titles, and the role is open to all levels of experience. We are looking for:
- A genuine passion for technology. Real enthusiasm for technology in and out of work: a home network, a home server or Raspberry Pi project, or simply a habit of taking things apart to see how they work.
- A working knowledge of hardware and networking. A practical grasp of how computers and networks behave, and the confidence to trace a fault when software and hardware do not co-operate.
- A can-do approach to problems. The determination to take a problem on and see it through, and the resourcefulness to keep going when the first answer does not work.
- An understanding of how software operates. Enough grasp of how software behaves to diagnose faults, without needing to read its source code line by line.
- Strong client-facing and communication skills. Confidence dealing directly with users and clients, including frustrated ones, and the ability to translate a user's problem into what a developer needs to know.
- A readiness to take ownership. Comfort managing your own priorities and working on your own initiative. The developers are on hand, but the support function will be yours.
- A commitment to learning and to service. Someone who asks questions, picks things up quickly, and takes satisfaction in solving problems and helping users.
- A readiness to contribute from the outset. Keen to learn our products and systems quickly and to start helping early.
Desirable, but not essential
None of the following is required; each would simply be an advantage:
- Experience in technical support, software support, or a similar client-facing technical role.
- A grounding in networking fundamentals, from work, study, or a qualification.
- Familiarity with any of our technologies: .NET and C#, SQL Server, MongoDB, Kubernetes, Azure, or network-attached storage.
- Some SQL, or scripting in any language.
- A knack for picking up new systems and tools quickly.
- An interest in engineering, maritime, or naval architecture.
- Experience from personal projects or study, which we value as much as experience gained at work.
Recruitment Process
Our recruitment process is designed to give candidates the opportunity to demonstrate their experience, motivation, and suitability for the role. The process will consist of the following stages:
- Initial CV Sift – All applications will be reviewed to assess candidates’ skills, qualifications, and experience against the requirements of the role.
- Practical Assessment (completed remotely) — Shortlisted candidates will be invited to complete a short set of practical exercises in their own time, usually taking around 90 minutes. The exercises are designed to explore how candidates approach problems rather than to test any particular tools or prior experience, and candidates may use whichever methods or programming languages they prefer.
- In-Person Interview – Candidates who progress to the final stage will be invited to attend an in-person interview. In addition to discussing their experience, motivation and interest in the role, the interview will include some short, practical, task-based elements, allowing candidates to demonstrate their approach and to learn more about the position and the organisation.
If you require any reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process, please let us know and we will be happy to discuss how we can support you.
Other
Alongside your CV, tell us about a technical problem you diagnosed and resolved, in hardware, networking, or software. Personal projects are fine, and often the best examples. A few paragraphs is plenty, and we read every one.
