About Monmouth Scientific
Monmouth Scientific designs, manufactures and supports clean-air and containment equipment for customers across scientific, healthcare, education and industrial environments. Our products combine mechanical, electrical and software elements and are frequently configured to meet specific customer, operational and compliance requirements.
Role purpose
The Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for the electrical design, development, documentation and through-life technical support of Monmouth products. The role converts customer and product requirements into safe, compliant and buildable electrical solutions, while supporting production, service, purchasing, suppliers and customers.
The role may be appointed at Electrical Design Engineer or Senior Electrical Design Engineer level, depending on the successful candidate's experience, technical breadth and ability to operate independently.
This is a hands-on position with significant influence over product reliability, regulatory assurance and manufacturing efficiency. Accurate designs, controlled documentation and effective fault prevention are central to reducing rework, avoiding unplanned cost and maintaining dependable customer delivery.
Key responsibilitiesElectrical design and product development
· Produce electrical specifications, schematics and designs for new custom products using SEE Electrical or equivalent electrical design software.
· Create test documentation and contribute to the planning activities required to move designs safely and efficiently into manufacture.
· Develop or reconstruct electrical schematics for revised products and existing products where controlled drawings are incomplete or unavailable.
· Support the development, improvement and correction of core products using electrical design and CAD tools such as SEE Electrical and TurboCAD.
· Ensure designs are practical to manufacture, service and support throughout the product lifecycle.
Project delivery and design-to-cost
· Project manage customer-special projects from requirements capture through design release and handover to manufacture, liaising directly with customers and internal teams to agree specifications, technical decisions, priorities and timescales.
· Project manage design-to-cost activities, balancing product performance, compliance, manufacturability, lead times and commercial targets.
· Lead design-for-manufacture upgrade projects to improve build efficiency, repeatability, product quality and cost-effectiveness.
Technical and manufacturing support
· Provide responsive technical support to production engineers, service engineers, purchasing, the wider design team and export customers.
· Investigate electrical equipment faults, identify root causes and support safe, proportionate repairs and corrective actions.
· Where required, assist with fault diagnosis on fixed factory equipment, including machinery such as saws and routers, within competence and site safety controls.
· Prepare technical bulletins and procedures for product upgrades, repairs and recurring technical issues.
· Develop practical engineering tools, including electrical and ATEX calculation spreadsheets, to support consistent design decisions.
ATEX, CompEx and product compliance
· Provide application-design guidance for ATEX products and support the development of new compliant designs.
· Coordinate with third-party compliance test houses for product, CompEx and type-compliance testing, providing the required technical information, reviewing results and ensuring that corrective actions are completed and documented.
· Define and maintain the required structure and content of product Technical Files, including the evidence and documentation required to support CE marking and UK regulatory compliance, including UKCA marking where applicable.
· Assess the implications of new or revised British Standards and translate relevant requirements into product, process or documentation changes.
· Support administration and effective use of the company's BSI membership and standards resources.
Supplier, PCB and software coordination
· Provide technical support to suppliers of PCB assemblies and other electrical components, resolving specification, build and quality issues.
· Work with suppliers and purchasing to source appropriate components and equipment, including compliant alternatives where parts are obsolete, discontinued or unavailable.
· Obtain and retain relevant compliance evidence, datasheets, declarations, instructions and supporting technical information.
· Oversee and test software updates delivered by contract software engineers, confirming that changes operate as intended before release.
Documentation and configuration control
· Compile, source, collate and archive accurate product documentation, including Technical File evidence, ERP/Sage data, datasheets, instructions, test records and photographs.
· Create and maintain accurate bills of materials within the company's ERP and product-data systems to support operations, purchasing, product costing and controlled manufacture.
· Identify missing, inconsistent or poorly controlled information and take ownership of bringing it to an appropriate standard.
· Maintain clear traceability between design decisions, released drawings, components, compliance evidence and production information.
· Promote disciplined document control so that production, service and purchasing teams can rely on current approved information.
Knowledge, skills and experienceEssential
· Practical experience in electrical design for manufactured products, machinery, control panels, industrial equipment or a closely related environment.
· Ability to produce and interpret electrical specifications, schematics, wiring information and test documentation.
· Experience of an electrical CAD package such as SEE Electrical, EPLAN or AutoCAD Electrical.
· Sound understanding of electrical safety, product compliance, component selection and controlled Technical File documentation.
· Strong fault-finding and problem-solving capability, with the judgement to distinguish immediate repair needs from underlying design or process issues.
· Ability to communicate clearly with production, service, purchasing, suppliers, customers and engineers from other disciplines.
· Organised and methodical approach to documentation, change control and completion of corrective actions.
Desirable
· Experience of SEE Electrical/eTap SEE Electrical and TurboCAD.
· CompEx Ex12 competence, ATEX application-design experience or the willingness and capability to undertake relevant training.
· Experience supporting PCB assemblies, embedded controls, HMIs or product software releases.
· Experience of bespoke engineered products, laboratory equipment, clean-air systems, containment equipment or regulated customer environments.
· Familiarity with ERP or product-data systems such as Sage and with structured engineering document control.
Qualifications
· HNC, HND, degree, apprenticeship or equivalent professional experience in electrical/electronic engineering or a related discipline.
· Relevant electrical safety, machinery, ATEX or CompEx qualifications are advantageous.
Personal qualities
· Practical, curious and comfortable working across design, production and service issues.
· Able to balance technical rigour with proportionate, commercially aware decisions.
· Persistent in resolving incomplete information and closing actions properly.
· Collaborative and willing to explain technical matters clearly to non-specialists.
· Committed to safe working, product reliability, customer assurance and continuous improvement.
What the role offers
· Ownership of electrical design across the full product lifecycle, from initial requirement through manufacture and field support.
· A varied role spanning bespoke projects, core-product improvement, compliance, supplier development and operational problem-solving.
· The opportunity to make a visible contribution to product reliability, manufacturing efficiency and customer confidence.
