University Criteria
- An applicant’s Level 3 subjects must include a mathematical-based subject and a science, technology, engineering or additional mathematics related subject: for instance, A-level Mathematics and Physics or BTEC 90-credit Diploma in Engineering. ·
- Applicants should have five GCSEs at grade C or above or grade 4 to 9 (or equivalent), including English, Mathematics and a science, technology or engineering-related subject. ·
- An applicant that has completed a Level 3 Apprenticeship in a relevant area (for instance, as a Product Design and Development Technician) may be eligible for admission. ·
- Full UK Right to work in the UK for the duration of the apprenticeship including End Point Assessment Period. ·
- An applicant that has completed a Foundation Certificate or Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject may be eligible for admission

2026 Apprentice / Degree Programme
This is a unique opportunity to combine a hands on Apprentice Job with recognized educational degree at a Top motorsport engineering facility. You will combine a Degree at Bolton University, with a full-time apprentice job where you will work and perform the practical aspect of working on all types of road vehicles and motor sport / race cars. Based at Oulton Park in Cheshire you will start learning the practical basics of vehicle maintenance working upwards to race cars. You will allot time to your university studying curriculum, some off which will be online study time. You will also be expected to contribute some of your own time towards your studies and learning that may be required as part of the role. Based at Oulton Park, there will also be the need for travel to our F1 facility, which is based in Darwen Lancs, plus to your University at Bolton as an when required. In addition, as you progress your involvement will lead you to be involved in supporting a race car and ultimately being a 1 engineer. As such weekends must be free as you will endure travel around most of the UK race circuits. Role Overview
The Motorsport BEng Degree Apprentice Automotive Performance Engineer will join the BEng (Hons) Automotive Performance Engineering (Motorsport) program to develop the technical, analytical and professional capabilities required for a future career in high‑performance automotive and motorsport engineering. The role involves engaging in hands‑on engineering practice, advanced computational analysis, motorsport operations, and project‑based learning while working toward professional accreditation with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
Key Responsibilities
- Learn & apply mathematical, scientific and engineering principles to analyse and solve complex automotive and motorsport engineering problems.
- Participate in real motorsport environments through practical workshops, race‑team activities and industry-linked projects.
- Learn appropriate technology i.e. Use CAD, CAE, CFD and FEA tools to design, model and optimise high‑performance vehicle systems, also resolve road going vehicle technical issues.
- Learn how Develop engineering designs that consider safety, sustainability, commercial constraints and industry standards.
- Conduct workshop investigations to test hypotheses, validate models and evaluate engineering solutions. Manage engineering projects including planning, risk assessment, documentation and presentation of outcomes.
- Collaborate effectively in teams, taking on both leadership and supporting roles in group engineering tasks. Communicate complex technical information clearly to both specialist and non‑technical audiences. Engage in personal development planning to build professional skills and prepare for lifelong learning and potential progression toward Chartered Engineer status.
- Learn how to record all aspects of your work in detail in formats that are recoverable, shareable and that may form part of an audit and vehicle maintenance records.
Essential Skills & Attributes
- Good foundation in Math’s and Physics with the ability to apply first principles to engineering challenges.
- Analytical and problem‑solving mindset capable of breaking down complex systems and reaching evidence‑based conclusions.
- Practical engineering aptitude including workshop competence, testing skills and hands‑on mechanical understanding.
- Proficiency with digital engineering tools such as CAD, simulation and computational analysis software.
- Awareness of environmental, ethical and societal impacts of engineering decisions. Teamwork and leadership potential with the ability to contribute to collaborative engineering projects. Effective communication skills in written, verbal and graphical formats.
- Commitment to professional development and readiness to engage with industry expectations and standards. Due to the location of the businesses a driving license is essential.
Desirable Experience
- Prior exposure to motorsport or automotive environments (e.g., karting, club racing, vehicle restoration, engineering clubs).
- Experience or knowledge of engineering software such as SolidWorks, MATLAB, ANSYS or similar tools, but with aptitude to understand what is required, then learn and apply.
- Participation in STEM projects, competitions or technical extracurricular activities.
- Work experience in engineering or technical roles, especially those involving mechanical systems or problem‑solving.
