Please note: This role is voluntary and can be fully remote or in person in our studios in Barry, South Wales.

Due to the amount of training involved and the nature of this position, we are looking for long-term volunteers who can provisionally volunteer with us for more than 6 months.

Introduction

Bro Radio is the local Community Radio station in the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales. We are looking for new volunteers to join our news team as Broadcast Journalists.

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in radio, news and current affairs, and wants to kick start their career in the industry. We also welcome candidates with some experience in the industry and would like to commit some spare time to volunteering with us.

Why Bro Radio?

Bro Radio aims to offer an alternative to commercial, national and BBC Radio, by educating, entertaining, informing and engaging with the community it serves that other media services cannot. Like other community radio stations across the UK, we are run entirely by volunteers, hence why this position is unpaid. However, by committing some time with us, you will meet some of the brightest young journalists in the region and build up your own contacts in the industry. Throughout your time with our news team, you will have plenty of opportunities to produce your own content and build your portfolio.

We are proud of what we do, and we do take our work seriously. Bro Radio has the largest social media following of any media organisation based in the Vale of Glamorgan, reaching an audience of over 22,000 listeners and in 2024, its website reached over 2 million pages views, fuelled largely by local news content. Some of our previous volunteers moved on to local TV stations, PR & Communications agencies and major media outlets including the BBC, ITV, Global and more. We will also provide training and support, sharing job opportunities to help you go further.

Role Responsibility

Your responsibilities include:

Write, record, edit and upload local news bulletins.
Research suitable stories for our bulletins, including liaising with external agencies when necessary.
Occasionally cover for other Broadcast Journalists.

We offer trainings via Bro Radio Academy and further development opportunities throughout your time with us. We expect some of our Broadcast Journalists to gradually take on online news article production and on-site/on-air reporting as well in the future. We are also looking at potentially rotating our Broadcast Journalists into other programming and production team rotas, when possible, subject to mutual agreement.

The Ideal Candidate

You should be able to demonstrate an interest in news, culture, sport, lifestyles and politics in our region and in Wales, including the differences they have from their English equivalents.
You should be passionate about radio and podcasts. You have already been consuming news content on either radio, TV or newspapers, and you are familiar with how news is presented on different platforms.
You should be confident in communicating, and be able to produce engaging, high-standard news-led content with a focus on our region and South Wales.
You are familiar with social media and major news sources in Wales
You will have the dedication to be able to research and produce bulletins at least once a week, and you are also willing to cover for other newsreaders occasionally, subject to mutual agreements.
You will be able to work calmly and accurately. You are willing to learn basic editing skills, the Myriad newsroom system, Ofcom regulations and work with external news sources.
You have a basic set-up with a suitable microphone and access to the internet.

Next Steps

There will be an induction session shortly after the application process is completed. After that, the training and shadowing process will take place, followed by an assessment, which will be explained as part of the induction session. Successful candidates will then become cover newsreaders, covering bulletins across the week.

Application Process

After the initial screening of CVs uploaded, candidates will be invited to record a sample news bulletin with instructions as part of an assessment. Depending on the number of applicants, we might invite some successful candidates to attend a short interview online. The interview is to be held provisionally on one evening in early August.
