Full job description

Accountabilities

Safeguarding Lead: Take a leading role in putting BSS’s safeguarding and child protection policies into practice, ensuring that any issues or concerns involving children and young people are dealt with appropriately and effectively. Acting as the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) at the centre, provide cover for the Centre Manager when required, ensuring all safeguarding concerns are properly recorded, followed up, and escalated to the appropriate person or organisation where necessary. Full training will be provided during induction to ensure the postholder is suitably prepared and confident in fulfilling these responsibilities.

Welfare and Pastoral Care: Ensure the effective delivery of BSS’s Welfare Policy by providing exceptional welfare and pastoral support suited to the students’ age, culture and background. The aim is to safeguard their physical and emotional well-being and to promote a caring, respectful and inclusive environment where students feel safe, valued and happy. Any concerns or disclosures relating to actual or suspected abuse must be reported immediately to the Centre Manager and the Head Office Designated Safeguarding Lead or Deputy.

Student Observations: Oversee and manage the concerns and conduct logs on the database, ensuring regular monitoring of student behaviour, attitude and general conduct. Address any issues that arise, particularly those involving concerning or aggressive behaviour, and escalate serious or ongoing matters to the Centre Manager as required. Provide guidance to all staff on how to fill out conduct and concern logs correctly on the database.

Team Leadership and Development: Lead, support and motivate your pastoral team by setting high standards of professionalism and care. Provide ongoing guidance, mentoring and CPD sessions to help them perform confidently and effectively. Conduct appraisals participate in any staff disciplinary or development processes when necessary.

Boarding House Standards: Oversee the smooth running of each Boarding House by ensuring high standards of cleanliness, safety and organisation. Regularly visit the houses, attend meetings, review supervision rotas, and communicate with students and staff. Carry out routine checks to ensure communal areas are well maintained, policies are being followed, and students feel at home in a safe, comfortable environment.

Student Accommodation: Allocate students to Houses and rooms on the database with care and consideration, considering age, nationality, preferences and any special requirements. Follow BSS accommodation policies to ensure fairness, balance and a positive living experience for all students.

Medical Support and Allergies: Work closely with the welfare team to maintain an excellent standard of medical care. Take charge of unwell students, treating minor illnesses, giving over the counter medication when needed. Ensuring all relevant BSS staff and host school staff are aware of medical conditions and allergies.

Medication Administration: Dispense prescribed and over the counter medication in line with BSS policies and medical guidance, maintaining clear, accurate and timely records on the database.

Health and Safety: Adhere to all Health and Safety policies, ensuring risk assessments and related policies are consistently applied. Take proactive steps to create a safe environment for students, group leaders and staff at all times.

Student Experience and Feedback: Monitor student feedback weekly through questionnaires and discussions, implementing action plans to address concerns and enhance overall satisfaction. Strive to deliver an outstanding all-round experience covering study, actvities, social activities and excursions.

Group Leader Relations: Welcome and support international Group Leaders upon arrival, providing inductions, holding regular meetings, and ensuring effective communication throughout their stay. Resolve any issues promptly to maintain strong relationships and satisfaction levels.

Out of Hours Emergencies: Respond swiftly and appropriately to any incidents or emergencies that occur during the night, following BSS’s policies to protect the safety and welfare of all students, group leaders and staff.

Student Transfers (If required): To undertake student transfers courteously and efficiently, adhering to all timings and procedures to deliver a professional, high-quality welcome and departure service that ensures minimal waiting times and a positive first and last impression of the school

Social Media Photography & Video: Delegate a member of staff to be responsible for capturing high-quality footage of lessons, activities, evening entertainment, and excursions using British Summer School recording devices.

Centre Requirements: To help ensure that the centre is set up effectively and packed away as required by the Head Office team.

KEY PURPOSE OF JOB:
To be responsible, together with the Centre Manager, for the welfare of all students, group leaders, and staff at your centre

REPORTING TO:
Centre Manager

HOURS:
Morning shift: 07:30 – 17:30 Afternoon shift: 13:00 – 23:00

The above shows the typical working hours. Staff will be scheduled across both weekdays and weekends. Weekend shifts may vary to support Check ins /outs or transfers.

Hours may vary between centres and according to the needs of the Summer School.

SALARY:
£780.42 per week + 12.07% Holiday Pay Total weekly pay £874.62 (Including Holiday Pay)

Accommodation Deduction: An accommodation deduction of £74.62 will deducted for those staff that are residential.
