Procurement Manager – Construction & Building Materials
£45,000–£48,000 per year, depending on experience
Nottinghamshire | Office Based | Full-time, Permanent | 40 hours per week
Take ownership. Improve the process. Make a difference.
We are an established contractor looking for an experienced, commercially minded Procurement Manager to take ownership of our materials procurement function and help improve the systems and processes that support our wider business.
This is not a role for someone who simply raises purchase orders and reacts to requests.
We’re looking for someone who plans ahead, negotiates well, spots problems before they happen and looks for smarter ways of working.
If you’re currently a Procurement Manager, Senior Buyer, Construction Buyer, Materials Manager or an experienced building-materials professional looking to move contractor-side, this could be an excellent opportunity to have genuine responsibility and influence.
What You’ll Be Responsible For
Our teams need the right materials, in the right place, at the right time.
You’ll take ownership of procurement once work is released by Operations, including:
- Planning material requirements across multiple live projects
- Reviewing specifications, quantities and required delivery dates
- Obtaining and comparing supplier quotations
- Negotiating prices, terms and delivery arrangements
- Selecting suppliers based on overall commercial value, service and reliability
- Raising and managing purchase orders and supplier confirmations
- Monitoring availability, lead times and deliveries
- Identifying shortages and supply risks before they affect site
- Resolving incorrect deliveries, shortages and supplier issues
- Managing returns, credits and routine invoice discrepancies
- Developing strong relationships with merchants, manufacturers and suppliers
- Reviewing supplier performance and identifying cost-saving and better-buying opportunities
You’ll understand that the cheapest price isn’t always the best commercial decision. Availability, delivery reliability, transport costs, labour productivity and programme impact all matter.
Make Our Systems Better
We already have established workflow, accounting, reporting and Microsoft 365 systems in place.
We’re not looking for somebody simply to maintain them. We want someone who will help us make them better.
You don’t need experience with every system we use, but you should be comfortable with technology and naturally think:
Can we make this simpler? Can we automate this? Why are we entering this twice? Why does this problem keep happening?
You’ll have the opportunity to improve procurement workflows, material tracking, supplier comparisons, reporting, dashboards and administrative processes.
If a better system can save time, reduce mistakes or make someone’s job easier, we want you to spot it and help make it happen.
Wider Business Support
This is a broader role than procurement alone. You’ll also oversee and coordinate several important business-support activities, including:
- Managing and prioritising a Materials & Deliveries Operative
- Day-to-day office management and administration
- Coordinating material collections and deliveries where required
- Fleet servicing, MOT and repair administration
- Remedial and warranty-work tracking
- Recruitment and interview coordination
- New-starter and onboarding administration
- Maintaining accurate supplier, project, fleet and workforce records
- Supporting managers with appropriate business administration
Operational programming and roofing labour allocation remain with our Operations team.
About You
Experience within construction, housebuilding, specialist subcontracting or building-material supply would be advantageous, although we’re equally interested in strong procurement professionals with relevant transferable experience and the right commercial approach.
We’re looking for someone with:
- Strong procurement or purchasing experience
- Good construction or building-material knowledge
- Excellent negotiation and supplier-management skills
- Strong commercial awareness
- Experience managing purchase orders, deliveries and lead times
- Evidence of achieving savings or improving supplier performance
- Excellent organisation and attention to detail
- Strong Excel and Microsoft 365 skills
- Confidence using procurement, ERP, workflow or project-management systems
- An interest in technology, automation and process improvement
- Confidence dealing with suppliers, site teams and management
- The ability to make sensible day-to-day decisions independently
A CIPS or similar procurement qualification would be advantageous but is not essential. Practical experience, commercial judgement and what you have actually achieved matter more to us.
The Person We Want
We’re prepared to pay well because we’re looking for someone very good.
You’ll be someone who:
- Takes ownership and follows things through
- Plans ahead rather than constantly firefighting
- Doesn’t need constantly chasing
- Spots potential problems early
- Is commercially aware and confident negotiating
- Enjoys solving problems and fixing their root causes
- Embraces technology and better ways of working
- Communicates clearly and makes decisions
- Takes pride in making other people’s jobs easier
When something goes wrong, we want someone who comes back with:
“Here’s what’s happened, here are the options, and this is what I recommend.”
Genuine Responsibility
We don’t want to employ an experienced person and then make them ask permission for every small decision.
Within agreed company procedures, you’ll have the authority to manage routine purchasing decisions, negotiate with suppliers, resolve normal supply and delivery issues, coordinate urgent material requirements and improve the processes within your area.
Major commercial decisions will naturally remain with senior management, but for the normal day-to-day running of your function, we want you to own it.
What Success Looks Like
You’ll know you’re doing a great job when:
- Materials are ready before our roofing teams need them
- Purchasing is accurate and commercially controlled
- Supplier performance improves
- Shortages and unnecessary last-minute collections reduce
- Problems are identified before they affect site
- Information is accurate and easy to find
- Systems become simpler and more effective
- Technology removes repetitive administration
- Recurring problems result in permanent improvements
- Operations can concentrate on running the programme
- Management knows your area is under control without constantly checking it
Why Join Us?
Because this is a role where you can actually make a difference.
We don’t just want someone to inherit an existing process and maintain it. We want you to understand how we work, challenge inefficient processes constructively and help us develop better ways of doing things.
If you’re currently in a role where you know you could contribute more but don’t have the authority or freedom to do it, we’d like to hear from you.
After 12 months, we want you to be able to look back and say:
“I improved this.”
Whether that means better buying, stronger suppliers, fewer shortages, improved systems, reduced administration or simply making everyone’s working day easier.
How to Apply
Please apply with your CV.
We’d also particularly like to hear about one thing you have personally improved in a previous role.
It could be a procurement process, supplier arrangement, cost saving, new system, automation or operational problem.
Tell us what the problem was, what you changed and what difference it made.
