This is a key position within the business with responsibility for maintaining and continually improving our ISO 9001 Quality Management System and ISO/IEC 17020 accreditation, managing our relationship with UKAS, and ensuring quality and compliance are embedded consistently across our inspection activities.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Directors, management team and technical personnel and will have the authority and support to drive continual improvement across the business.
The Role
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Owning, maintaining and continually improving the Company's Quality Management System in accordance with ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17020
- Acting as the Company's primary contact with UKAS and managing surveillance, reassessment and extension-to-scope activities
- Maintaining the Quality Manual, procedures, work instructions, forms and controlled documentation
- Developing and delivering the Company's annual internal audit programme
- Managing non-conformities and leading root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions
- Reviewing technical procedures, inspection methodologies, checklists and report formats
- Maintaining effective document control and version management
- Managing the Company's competence framework, including competence matrices, technical witnessing and ongoing monitoring
- Maintaining processes to demonstrate impartiality, independence and confidentiality
- Coordinating Management Review meetings and reporting quality performance, risks and actions to the Directors
- Managing customer complaints, appeals and associated investigations
- Monitoring changes to relevant standards, legislation and guidance including UKAS, EA and ILAC publications
- Supporting compliance with the Building Regulations, Building Safety Act, Approved Documents, applicable British Standards and industry guidance
- Maintaining Company memberships, professional registrations, certifications and approvals
- Providing quality and compliance training to employees and supporting managers with technical CPD programmes
- Undertaking desktop quality reviews of completed inspection reports
- Ensuring quality records support applicable Golden Thread information requirements for Higher-Risk Buildings
Digital Quality & Continuous Improvement
Technology forms an increasingly important part of our inspection and quality processes.
You will be responsible for maintaining and improving our digital quality systems, including PlanRadar and associated inspection platforms, ensuring inspection templates, workflows, mandatory information and reporting outputs remain aligned with Company procedures.
You will also support the introduction and validation of new technologies, including AI-assisted quality and inspection processes, helping us improve consistency, efficiency and assurance while maintaining appropriate controls.
About You
We are looking for someone with strong quality management experience gained within a regulated, inspection, certification, construction, engineering or similarly technical environment.
Ideally, you will have:
- Strong practical knowledge of ISO 9001
- Experience of ISO/IEC 17020
- Experience working with UKAS or another accreditation/certification body
- Experience managing or delivering internal and external audits
- Strong knowledge of QMS development and document control
- Experience investigating non-conformities and implementing effective corrective actions
- An understanding of competence management and technical witnessing
- Strong analytical and report-writing skills
- The confidence to work directly with senior management, technical specialists and external assessors
- Excellent attention to detail with a pragmatic approach to quality and compliance
- The ability to interpret standards and regulatory requirements and translate them into practical business processes
Experience within building inspection, passive fire protection, construction, building safety or another UKAS-accredited inspection environment would be particularly advantageous.
Lead Auditor training or a recognised quality management qualification would also be beneficial.
What We're Looking For
This role would suit someone who doesn't see quality as simply maintaining paperwork.
We're looking for a person who can understand how the business operates, identify where processes can be improved and work constructively with colleagues to make those improvements happen.
You'll be comfortable challenging existing practices where necessary while helping teams develop practical systems that make compliance easier and improve the quality and consistency of our inspection services.
