Location: Bridgend
Working arrangement: Office based
Role type: Software Development & Technical Problem Solving
Build. Solve. Learn. Make an Impact.
We're looking for a Software Developer who wants to do more than simply work through a development backlog.
At Comgem, you'll work on our B2B commerce and business software platform, combining software development with real-world technical problem solving.
You'll build functionality, fix bugs, work with databases and investigate customer issues, giving you exposure to the complete software lifecycle and the opportunity to become a genuinely rounded developer.
We're an agile, fast-moving software company. Priorities can change, customer challenges need solving and new opportunities emerge quickly. You'll need to be comfortable adapting, investigating problems and working collaboratively to get to the right solution.
This is an office-based role at our Bridgend office, working closely day-to-day with our Development and Customer Support teams.
Our core technologies include C#/.NET, Microsoft SQL Server, Vue / React, HTML and CSS.
You don't need to know everything. You do need good technical foundations, curiosity and the determination to work out why something isn't working and fix it.
About Comgem
Comgem develops B2B commerce and business software that helps companies transform how they sell, operate and work with their customers.
Our platform supports everything from products, customer-specific pricing and ecommerce through to quotes, orders, content, business processes and integrations.
We're a growing team based in Bridgend, building and supporting technology that's used by businesses every day.
What You'll Be Doing
This is a varied role combining software development with technical customer problem solving.
You'll be involved in:
- Developing and improving functionality using C#/.NET.
- Working with Microsoft SQL Server and writing SQL queries.
- Creating and modifying HTML and CSS.
- Investigating, debugging and fixing software bugs and unexpected application behaviour.
- Investigating technical issues raised by customers.
- Using code, data and debugging tools to identify root causes.
- Testing your work before release.
- Working alongside our Development and Customer Support teams.
- Speaking directly with customers when you need more information to solve a problem.
- Identifying recurring issues and helping us prevent them from happening again.
As your knowledge grows, you'll take ownership of increasingly complex development work and technical problems.
This isn't a role where every week will look exactly as planned. You might be developing functionality one day and helping investigate an important customer issue the next. You'll need to be comfortable switching context, assessing priorities and focusing on what needs solving.
What We're Looking For
We're more interested in strong foundations, problem-solving ability and potential than finding someone who already knows every technology we use.
You'll have some commercial software or web development experience and a good working knowledge of the following:
C#
You can understand, debug and modify existing C# code and have a good grasp of object-oriented development.
Microsoft SQL Server
You're comfortable with relational databases and writing queries using SELECTs, JOINs, WHERE clauses and other common SQL operations.
HTML & CSS
You understand how web pages are structured and styled and are comfortable making frontend changes.
Useful, But Not Essential
Experience with any of the following would be a bonus:
ASP.NET MVC JavaScript Vue React REST APIs JSON/XML Git Azure DevOps Ecommerce ERP/business software System integrations
If your C#, SQL and web-development foundations are good, don't be put off if you can't tick every box.
The Person We're Looking For
Technical skills are important, but how you approach problems matters just as much.
You're Curious
When something isn't working, you want to understand why rather than simply find a workaround.
You Enjoy Problem Solving
You're happy looking through code, querying a database and following the clues until you find the cause.
You Take Ownership
You care about getting something resolved, not simply completing your small part and passing it on.
You're Adaptable
You're comfortable working in an agile environment where priorities can change. You can move between different types of work and respond constructively when something more important needs your attention.
You're Comfortable With Customers
You don't need to be a salesperson, but you should be happy asking customers questions and explaining technical issues clearly.
You Want to Learn
Our platform is extensive. We don't expect you to understand everything on day one, but we do expect you to want to understand more every month.
You're a Team Player
You'll work closely with developers and Customer Support, sharing knowledge, asking questions and helping the team get to the right outcome.
Why Join Comgem?
This is an opportunity to develop skills that go well beyond writing code.
You'll gain hands-on experience across:
Development Databases Debugging B2B Ecommerce APIs & Integrations Customer Problem-Solving Testing Full Software Lifecycle
You'll work on a live commercial platform, solve problems that genuinely matter to customers and see how the software you develop is used by businesses every day.
We want to help you progress from being someone who can write code to someone who can understand a problem, investigate it, build the solution and see it through.
If you want a development role where you're given a tiny section of a codebase and told to stay in your lane, this probably isn't it.
If you're looking for variety, responsibility and the opportunity to become a more rounded software developer, we'd love to hear from you.
Application Process
We want to understand more than what's listed on your CV, so please take the time to tell us why you think this role is right for you.
How to Apply
Please submit your CV and a cover letter.
Your cover letter should clearly include:
- Examples of relevant development work, projects or technical problems you've worked on.
- Why your experience and skills make you suitable for the role.
- What attracts you to this opportunity and to working at Comgem.
- Your salary expectations.
- Your current notice period or earliest available start date.
Your examples don't need to be huge projects. We're interested in understanding what you've worked on, the part you played and how you approached the problem.
Please make sure your application includes all of the information requested above so that we can properly assess your suitability for the role.
What Happens Next?
1. Application Review
We'll review your CV and cover letter against the requirements of the role.
2. Initial Microsoft Teams Interview
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an initial interview via Microsoft Teams.
We'll use this conversation to learn more about your experience, technical foundations, approach to problem solving and what you're looking for in your next role.
It will also give you an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about Comgem and the position.
3. Face-to-Face Interview & Practical Assessment
Candidates progressing from the initial interview will be invited to our Bridgend office for a face-to-face interview and practical technical assessment.
The assessment is designed to help us understand how you approach development and problem solving. We're interested in how you think, investigate and work towards a solution, not whether you can recite everything from memory.
You'll also have the opportunity to meet members of the team, see the working environment and get a better understanding of what day-to-day life at Comgem is like.
