Full job description

VAT Manager

We are seeking an experienced and motivated VAT Manager to join our long-established family firm of accountants based in York, known for our personal approach, long‑standing client relationships, and supportive working culture. This office-based role is an excellent opportunity for a VAT specialist who is looking to take ownership of a varied client portfolio while leading and developing a team.

The successful candidate will provide expert VAT advice and compliance services to a diverse range of clients, ensuring high levels of service delivery and technical excellence.

Salary: £50,000+ based on experience (39 hour week)

Key Responsibilities:

Manage a portfolio of clients, providing VAT compliance and advisory services.
Review and oversee VAT returns prepared by team members.
Advise clients on a wide range of VAT matters, including complex transactions, property VAT, partial exemption, and international VAT issues.
Support clients with VAT registrations, deregistrations, disclosures, and HMRC enquiries.
Monitor changes in VAT legislation and communicate relevant developments to clients and colleagues.
Lead, mentor, and develop junior team members, providing technical guidance and performance support.
Review work completed by the VAT team to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Identify opportunities to add value to clients through proactive VAT planning and advisory services.
Build and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted adviser.
Work collaboratively with other departments to provide integrated client solutions.

This is a hands‑on role where you will build genuine relationships with clients and help shape the future of the team.

Requirements

Essential

CTA, ACA or ACCA qualified, or qualified by experience.
Ideally 5 years' experience within an accountancy practice.
Strong technical knowledge of UK VAT legislation and compliance requirements.
Experience using accounting software such as Sage and Xero.
Experience managing, mentoring, and developing a team.
Excellent communication and client relationship management skills.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
Commercial awareness and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Desirable

Experience dealing with complex VAT advisory projects.
Experience representing clients during HMRC enquiries and investigations.
