Full job description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Healthcare Support Worker to join the team within Ward 4, the National Child Inpatient Psychiatry Unit, based at the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow.

Ward 4 is a six-bedded national specialist service providing assessment, care and therapeutic interventions for children under 12 who are experiencing a range of complex mental health difficulties. You will work closely with children, families, carers and community teams to support recovery and positive outcomes. Ideally, you will have experience working with children, young people and families, particularly those with complex emotional, behavioural or mental health needs.

Experience within an inpatient or residential setting would be advantageous. As a valued member of the multidisciplinary team, you will support children throughout their treatment journey, working under the direction of registered nursing staff and the wider multidisciplinary team.

All roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

This is a permanent post working part-time hours (29).
The post is based within Ward 4, National Child Inpatient Psychiatry Unit, Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow.
The service operates 24/7, and you may be required to work across both the Child Psychiatry Inpatient Unit and the Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit to meet service needs. There may also be occasions where you will support children and families within community or home settings as part of planned interventions.

Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part-time hours.

Key responsibilities:

You will contribute to the delivery of person-centred, strengths-based and recovery-focused care under the direction of registered nursing staff and the wider multidisciplinary team.

This will include supporting therapeutic activities, promoting engagement with care plans, assisting with activities of daily living and helping to create a safe, nurturing and therapeutic environment. You will work collaboratively with children, families, carers and partner agencies, using effective communication skills and a compassionate, trauma-informed approach.

You will work with a degree of autonomy within agreed protocols and contribute to the ongoing assessment, implementation and evaluation of care. You may also be required to provide support within community or home settings as part of planned interventions and work flexibly across the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Units to meet service requirements.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

Experience of working with children, young people and families is desirable.
Experience supporting individuals with complex emotional, behavioural or mental health needs is desirable.
Experience within an inpatient or residential setting is advantageous.
Understanding of person-centred, strengths-based and recovery-focused approaches to care.
Understanding of trauma-informed approaches.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with children, families, carers and partner agencies.
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Ability to work with a degree of autonomy within agreed protocols.
Ability to contribute to the assessment, implementation and evaluation of care.
Compassionate and supportive approach when working with children and families.
Ability to support therapeutic activities and activities of daily living.
Commitment to maintaining a safe, nurturing and therapeutic environment.
Willingness to work flexibly across inpatient and, where required, community or home settings.
This post requires PVG Scheme Membership/Disclosure Scotland clearance.
