About the role

The Department of Computing is internationally recognised for excellence in both teaching and research. It offers a broad portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, educating over 1,200 taught students. Teaching Fellows play a vital role in the department by delivering teaching, coordinating student cohorts, designing laboratory programmes, supporting project work, and ensuring the smooth delivery of the department's educational activities.

The department is seeking a Teaching Fellow to support its strategically important undergraduate programmes, particularly in the core computing and mathematical subjects taught during the first two years. The successful candidate will teach selected topics—such as programming, mathematics, software engineering, compilers, or machine learning—depending on their expertise, while leading the development of engaging laboratory sessions. The role is highly student-focused and also involves collaborating with academic colleagues across the Department, Faculty, and College to contribute to curriculum development and new educational initiatives.

What you would be doing

The Teaching Fellow role involves delivering high-quality teaching across core undergraduate computing and mathematics subjects through lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, and project supervision. You would design and manage practical, laboratory-based learning experiences, assess coursework and examinations, provide timely and constructive feedback, and support students as both a personal tutor and year or cohort coordinator. The role also includes contributing to admissions and developing software tools that enhance teaching, learning, and assessment.

Beyond teaching, you would work collaboratively with academic colleagues across the Department, Faculty, and College to improve curricula, develop innovative teaching practices, and contribute to educational research and evaluation. You would coordinate teaching support teams, participate in committees and professional development activities, share best practice across Imperial, and engage with the wider higher education community through educational events and conferences, while working towards professional recognition such as Higher Education Academy accreditation.

What we are looking for

The department is seeking a candidate with a PhD in Computing or a closely related field, together with strong expertise in core computer science and its mathematical foundations. Applicants should have broad programming experience across modern languages, experience teaching and assessing university-level computing courses, and the ability to work confidently with a range of computing technologies. Experience with digital learning environments, knowledge of higher education teaching practices, and a willingness to work towards a recognised teaching qualification are desirable.

The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator who can teach effectively in a variety of settings, build positive relationships with students, and provide both academic and pastoral support. They should demonstrate initiative, creativity in problem-solving, strong organisational skills, and the ability to prioritise work under deadlines while collaborating effectively with colleagues across the Department, Faculty, and College. A commitment to continuous professional development and improving teaching practice is also essential.
