We’re looking for an enthusiastic and empathetic Advice Intern (Student Finance) to join the Advice Service at the University of Manchester Students’ Union (UMSU).
This is an exciting opportunity for a graduate looking to develop their knowledge and skills in professional advice. You’ll receive training, supervision and support from experienced advisers while gaining practical, hands-on experience of providing advice to students.
As an Advice Intern, you’ll be providing free, independent and confidential advice to students at the University of Manchester. You’ll have a particular focus on student finance and money advice, administering our emergency loan, developing your knowledge of funding options, Student Finance, tuition fees, financial support and other money-related issues. With the rising cost of living, you’ll play a key role in helping students access the financial support they need and empower them to make informed decisions. Alongside this, you’ll develop your ability to advise students on a range of other issues, including academic matters and regulations, housing and wider student life issues.
You’ll enjoy this role if you’re curious, willing to learn and interested in understanding how advice can help students navigate difficult or complex situations. You’ll need excellent communication skills and the ability to listen, remain calm and respond with empathy when students are experiencing difficult or sensitive circumstances. You’ll also learn how to recognise when a student needs additional support and when it is appropriate to signpost or refer them to specialist services.
A key part of the role will be learning through doing. You’ll take part in training, supervision and discussions about cases, using feedback and learning opportunities to develop your advice skills, knowledge and confidence. As you develop, you’ll have opportunities to take on increasing responsibility for advice enquiries.
Alongside one to one advice, the Advice Service delivers supported self-help resources, preventative campaigns and outreach activities to help students access information before problems escalate. If you enjoy engaging with people, you’ll have opportunities to contribute to website and social media content and support the team with presentations and workshops and promotional events.
You’ll be part of a small, supportive and dedicated team, working in a busy and varied environment where student wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience of professional advice work, develop specialist knowledge in student finance and build transferable skills for a career in advice, student services, welfare or related areas.
You don’t need to have previous experience of providing professional advice. We’re looking for someone with strong communication and interpersonal skills, a willingness to learn and a genuine commitment to supporting students. Experience in advice, welfare, support work, professional student services or other settings would be useful, but we’re particularly interested in your potential to develop and your approach to supporting others.

As part of the Bars management team, the role is responsible for our bar portfolio including 532 Bar and Kitchen (our student bar) and the Manchester Academy Music Venues. In addition to Assistant Bar Manager duties, the role will be responsible for one area of focus – Cellar & Stock Management. Around 75% of your time will be spent on the floor with both early morning deliveries and late night events.
Your day-to-day responsibilities include, but are not limited to, supervising deliveries, liaising with suppliers and handling any minor technical issues day to day trading may incur. Ensuring all cellars are kept clean, organised and compliant with safety standards. The role also requires supporting the Bars Management team during live music and student events in our four venues, as well as our making sure our student bar is running consistently throughout term time
You will support year on year growth within the department by ensuring GP% and waste control targets are met. Systematically tracking inventory, stock forecasting and ensuring regular stock rotation are important aspects of the role. You will be responsible for recruiting, training and developing the Cellar Supervisor team.
This role blends commercial leadership with hands on operational support, ensuring consistently strong financial performance across all bars.

This new venture is our most significant commercial launch in a decade, and the Junior Sous Chef will play an important role in helping build the kitchen operation from day one.
You will support the Head Chef in launching and running the kitchen for a new all-day Oxford Road bar and social venue, delivering a food offer that supports the rhythm of the site from morning coffee and lunch through to early evening, events, group bookings and pre-gig trade. This is not a fine-dining kitchen, but it is a serious commercial food operation where pace, quality, consistency, organisation and teamwork will really matter.
Working closely with the Head Chef, you will help set up the kitchen, build its routines, support food preparation and service, and help maintain the standards that make the venue successful. You will lead kitchen shifts, support junior colleagues and studying staff, and help make sure food quality, kitchen organisation, food safety, allergens, stock control, waste and service speed are consistently well managed.
This is a strong development opportunity for someone who wants to grow into a senior kitchen leadership role. You will gain experience of a new opening, commercial kitchen controls, team leadership, service delivery and the wider role food plays in a busy bar and social venue. Just as importantly, you will help create the kitchen culture from the start: organised, calm, safe, supportive and proud of the food being served.

Every commercial pound generated by the venue goes back into supporting students at the University of Manchester. That makes this a Sous Chef role where good food, strong teamwork, safe working and student impact all matter.
You will work as part of the wider Commercial team, alongside colleagues in Manchester Academy Venues, Bar 532 & Kitchen and Corridor Coffee, contributing to a growing Union hospitality operation with ambition beyond a single site. This is a rare opportunity for a hands-on, ambitious Sous Chef to be part of a major new opening and help build a kitchen with real purpose behind it.
