Full job description

Job purpose:

To support the business in creating and maintaining a safe, healthy and legally compliant working environment. The Health & Safety Advisor will provide practical advice, monitor compliance with health and safety legislation and company policies, analyse incidents, and promote a positive health and safety culture across all departments.

This role is instrumental in developing and embedding a positive health and safety culture, encouraging shared ownership of safety across all levels.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

Health & Safety Compliance

Advise managers and employees on health and safety legislation, best practice and company procedures.
Ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and other relevant UK legislation.
Conduct regular workplace inspections and audits, identifying hazards and recommending corrective actions.
Monitor completion of corrective actions and follow up where required.

Risk Management

Carry out and review risk assessments and safe systems of work.
Support departments in developing suitable control measures.
Assist with fire risk assessments and emergency preparedness.

Incident Investigation

Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences.
Identify root causes and recommend preventative measures.
Analyse and track incident data.
Produce investigation reports and monitor implementation of actions.
Report incidents to enforcing authorities where required (RIDDOR).

Training & Awareness

Deliver health and safety inductions for new starters.
Coordinate and deliver training, toolbox talks and safety briefings where appropriate.
Identify health and safety training needs across the business.
Promote employee engagement in health and safety initiatives.

Monitoring & Auditing

Conduct routine compliance audits.
Monitor PPE compliance.
Review contractor health and safety documentation.
Support internal and external audits.

Occupational Health

Assist in managing occupational health surveillance programmes.
Monitor workplace environmental risks including noise, dust and manual handling.
Liaise with occupational health providers where appropriate.

Documentation

Maintain accurate health and safety records.
Update policies, procedures and guidance documents.
Maintain accident statistics and produce management reports.
Ensure statutory inspections and maintenance records are up to date.

Continuous Improvement

Promote a proactive safety culture.
Recommend improvements to policies and procedures.
Keep up to date with changes in health and safety legislation.
Participate in health and safety committee meetings.

Person Specification:

Essential Qualifications

NEBOSH General Certificate.

Essential Experience

Previous experience in a Health & Safety Advisor role.
Experience within manufacturing environments.
Experience conducting accident investigations.
Experience completing risk assessments.
Experience delivering training.

Essential Knowledge

Knowledge of UK health and safety legislation.
Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations.
Manual Handling Operations Regulations.

Skills

Excellent communication skills.
Ability to influence managers and employees at all levels.
Excellent organisational skills.
Analytical and problem-solving ability.
Competent in Microsoft Office.
Ability to manage multiple priorities.
