In our academies we teach and support learners from Key Stages 1 – 5 who have been excluded from school or those with an EHCP who require a specialist placement. Every day our teams do incredible work, making a huge difference to the lives of complex and challenging learners.

We are currently seeking a practical, proactive, reliable and skilled Maintenance Assistant to join our Kirklees provision, primarily supporting the opening and ongoing operation of our new school site in Bradford.

This is a varied, hands-on role where you will be responsible for ensuring the school buildings, facilities and grounds remain safe, secure and well-maintained for our learners, staff and visitors. Working closely with the Head of Estates & Facilities, you will carry out routine maintenance tasks, respond to repairs, support health and safety compliance, and help create an environment where young people can thrive.

What you'll be doing

As a Maintenance Assistant, you will:

- Carry out day-to-day maintenance, repairs and reactive works across the school site.

- Conduct regular inspections of buildings, facilities and safety equipment to ensure everything is operating effectively and safely.

- Undertake basic maintenance work on electrical systems, heating, hot water systems and general building fabric.

- Assist with fire safety checks, security systems and statutory compliance requirements.

- Coordinate and support external contractors, ensuring work is completed to the required standards.

- Keep accurate maintenance and inspection records.

- Respond quickly and effectively to urgent maintenance issues and emergencies.

- Support the setup, development and ongoing maintenance of new school facilities.

- Work with colleagues and external health and safety providers to maintain compliance with relevant legislation.

- Carry out and support testing of electrical equipment and other safety devices, including PAT testing where required.

The ideal candidate will have experience in maintenance, building repairs or a skilled trade and be confident working independently across a range of tasks. You will have a strong understanding of health and safety, excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to prioritise workload in a busy school environment. A flexible approach, good communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with staff, contractors and visitors are essential.
