Full job description

At Castell, we're passionate about building high quality social homes and communities and we're growing fast. With a secured land pipeline set to deliver significant year-on-year growth over the next few years, we're looking for an experienced Financial Controller to lead our finance function through the next stage of the Group's growth.

About Us

Castell is a Welsh housing developer founded in 2019 with a simple mission: to help solve the housing crisis by delivering affordable, high quality, disability-adapted homes in partnership with housing associations and local authorities. What started as a small team has grown into a business of over 70 people, having already delivered hundreds of homes across South Wales with hundreds more currently on site, and an expanding pipeline reaching into South West England and the West Midlands.

The Role

The Financial Controller owns the technical and operational integrity of Group finance. You'll take the monthly close process, statutory reporting, treasury and financial controls to the next level of maturity; leading the Management Accountant and ensuring the numbers behind a fast-growing, multi-entity construction group are accurate, timely and built to withstand scrutiny from lenders, auditors and the board.

This is a hands-on leadership role in a business operating across a Group holding company, a construction company and a growing portfolio of SPVs. It suits someone who has operated at Financial Controller level in construction, housebuilding or property development, who is comfortable owning technical judgement calls, and who wants genuine exposure to the strategic and funding side of a scaling business.

Key Responsibilities

Own the Group's monthly management accounts and board reporting pack, consolidating results across the Group holding company, the construction company and the SPV portfolio
Lead and review the work of the Management Accountant, ensuring the monthly close, full balance sheet reconciliation schedule and intercompany eliminations are completed accurately and to deadline
Own Group and SPV cash flow forecasting and day-to-day treasury management, tracking facility drawdowns, covenant compliance and liquidity headroom
Act as a primary finance point of contact for external lenders and funders, preparing financial information packs, covenant certificates and reporting in support of funding and refinancing activity
Oversee statutory accounts preparation and Companies House filings for the Group and all SPV entities, and own the year-end audit relationship end-to-end
Own key technical accounting judgements — including revenue recognition, WIP/development cost capitalisation and SPV-level accounting treatment — working closely with the Finance Director
Design, implement and maintain financial controls and processes across the Group as new entities and schemes are onboarded
Own the CIS, VAT and payroll tax compliance framework, reviewing and approving submissions prepared by the Management Accountant
Partner with the commercial and land teams on budgeting, forecasting and scheme-level cost & valuation (CVR) reporting
Support the Finance Director and Managing Director on ad hoc strategic finance projects, including capital structure, funding and investment initiatives

What We're Looking For

Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent), with meaningful post-qualification experience at Financial Controller or senior finance manager level
Strong technical accounting background, ideally including group consolidations and multi-entity or SPV-based structures
Construction, housebuilding or property development sector experience strongly preferred
Proven experience managing, developing and reviewing the work of a finance team
Comfortable operating in a fast-growing, deadline-driven business, and able to build structure and process as the business scales rather than simply maintaining what exists
Confident, credible communicator, able to work directly with external lenders, auditors and senior stakeholders
Strong Excel skills; experience with Xero is an advantage
