SolidWorks Design Engineer / CAD Engineer
Location: The Wall Shop, Queenslie Industrial Estate, Glasgow
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Experience Required: Minimum 2 years’ SolidWorks design experience
About the Role
The Wall Shop is seeking an experienced and highly capable SolidWorks Design Engineer to join our growing manufacturing operation in Glasgow.
This is a hands-on design and production engineering role suited to someone who can work independently, use their own initiative, solve practical design problems and take responsibility for projects from concept through to manufacture.
The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and developing the aluminium frame structures and decorative wall panels used in our modular Smart Wall systems.
A key part of the role will be translating individual customer designs into accurate, production-ready drawings and CNC cutting information. This will include designing the aluminium support frames and determining the precise position and dimensions of all wall-panel cut-outs for televisions, fires, speakers, lighting, shelving, sockets, controls and other integrated equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design aluminium frames and structural components using SolidWorks.
- Develop accurate 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings.
- Create wall-panel designs incorporating all required openings, recesses and cut-outs.
- Produce accurate drawings and files suitable for CNC machining.
- Translate customer layouts and product specifications into practical manufacturing designs.
- Design for efficient manufacture, assembly and installation.
- Check dimensions, tolerances, clearances and component interfaces before release to production.
- Develop and improve standardised designs, templates and component libraries.
- Work closely with the manufacturing and installation teams to resolve practical design issues.
- Identify opportunities to simplify production, reduce waste and improve product quality.
- Take ownership of projects and work with minimal supervision.
Essential Requirements
- A minimum of 2 years’ professional experience using SolidWorks in a design or manufacturing environment.
- Strong 3D CAD modelling and technical drawing skills.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative.
- Good understanding of manufacturing processes and design for manufacture.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to interpret dimensions, technical information and product specifications.
- Practical problem-solving ability.
- Ability to manage multiple designs and priorities.
Desirable Experience
Experience in any of the following would be advantageous:
- Aluminium frame or extrusion design.
- Sheet materials, wall panels or architectural products.
- CNC routers and CNC machining.
- Preparing CAD/CAM files for production.
- Furniture, interiors, exhibition systems or modular construction.
- Design automation, configurations or parametric modelling within SolidWorks.
The Person We Are Looking For
We are particularly interested in someone who does not need to be given detailed instructions for every task. The successful candidate should be comfortable taking a design requirement, understanding what needs to be manufactured, identifying potential problems and developing a practical solution.
This is an opportunity to play an important role in the development of an innovative modular Smart Wall system and to help establish the design and manufacturing processes required as the company grows.
