Overview:
Honister Slate Mine is looking for a practical, hands-on Handyman to support our stone and production operations. This is a varied and rewarding role for someone who enjoys working with natural materials, building and repairing structures, and keeping our historic site running smoothly. If you’ve got a background in maintenance, are comfortable using tools, and have a can-do attitude, we’d love to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with stone handling and production activities, including splitting, shaping, and moving slate.
- Aid in Vehicle maintenance and plant upkeep.
- Build, repair, and maintain structures, displays, workspaces, and mine features using wood, stone, and other materials.
- Perform general repairs and maintenance across the site including minor construction, painting, tiling, and groundwork.
- Support basic electrical and plumbing tasks where qualified or experienced (e.g. fixing fixtures, running pipework, or wiring lighting).
- Light fabrication and occasional welding.
- Maintain tools and equipment to ensure safe and effective use.
- Work safely and respectfully within a live visitor attraction and historic site.
- Support the wider maintenance team and adapt to various needs as they arise.
Skills & Experience:
Essential:
- Proven experience using hand and power tools.
- Experience with heavy machinery.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weather and in physically demanding conditions.
- Ability to problem-solve and complete tasks with minimal supervision.
- Good level of practical building and repair knowledge.
Desirable:
- Experience working with stone, slate, or traditional materials.
- Basic electrical or plumbing knowledge or qualifications.
- Previous work in a quarry, construction, or heritage site environment would be helpful but not essential.
