About the role
Stump Cross Caverns is a show cave and visitor attraction in the Yorkshire Dales, welcoming families,
school groups and independent visitors year-round. We are looking for someone who can do three things
well: deliver brilliant educational workshops to school groups, help run our retail operation, and take charge
of the whole site when the Duty Manager is off.
This is a genuinely varied job. In term time you might spend your morning taking thirty Year 4s through cave
formation and fossil handling, and your afternoon merchandising a new delivery of crystals. In August you'll
be running shifts — opening up, briefing guides, handling the shop floor at its busiest, and making the call
when something needs a decision.
It suits someone who enjoys switching between teaching, selling and managing, and who wants more
responsibility than a standard front-of-house role offers.
Key responsibilities
Learning and education
● Deliver curriculum-linked workshops on geology, fossils and cave formation to school groups, sharing
delivery with the Duty Manager and co-delivering larger sessions
● Develop new workshop content and run holiday and family activity sessions
Retail
● Serve customers and drive sales across our crystal, fossil and gift ranges
● Merchandise displays, process deliveries and keep stock levels right
● Handle till operation, cash handling and end-of-day reconciliation
Duty management
● Take charge of the site during allocated shifts and while covering Duty Manager absence
● Open and close, brief and supervise the team on shift, and handle whatever comes up
● Act as responsible person for health and safety, including underground operations
Person specification
Essential
● Experience delivering educational or interpretive content to children — this could be from teaching, a
museum or heritage learning role, outdoor education, scouting or guiding, youth work, or a science
communication background● Confident presenting to and managing groups of up to 35 children
● Strong customer service instincts and comfort with retail selling
● Willingness and ability to take charge — making decisions, directing a team, holding a standard
● Physically able to work underground: cave passages involve steps, uneven ground, low sections and
cool damp conditions throughout
● Available to work weekends, bank holidays and school holidays as part of the standard pattern
● Enhanced DBS check (we will arrange and pay for this)
● Own transport — the site is rurally located with limited public transport
Desirable
● Formal teaching qualification or experience working within the National Curriculum
● Knowledge of geology, palaeontology, mineralogy or earth sciences
● Previous supervisory or duty management experience in a visitor attraction, retail or hospitality setting
● First aid at work certification
● Safeguarding training
● Experience with EPOS systems and stock management
● Caving, climbing or outdoor instruction background
